I would say that someone has had a shot at that sole already. Sole fight like crazy when speared, and can all to easily be lost. All the thrashing around they do can cause the damage seen on the one you have. Just cut around the wound when filleting to neaten it up. Tasty Fish!!:friday

Well, whoever had a pop at him couldn't have been a very good shot - they've gone right through the best part of the fillet. I'll probably cook first and cut second (whole, rather than filleted).

I agree though Trelawny, he was remarkably strong and feisty for his size - thrashing around like a demon!

I'm on my way down Devon/Cornwall this evening - what's the viz in that vicinity like at the moment?

We’ve seen an explosion in spearo numbers lately so Glowworm has put up a very useful thread with an even more useful link for some of the new guys, might even save you from a bo**ocking from the man with the clip board. (Fisheries officer)

Hey Guys sorry been away along time on a very long course, whats happening in the water around Portland/Weymouth and Dorset. Just about to get wet and feel abit out of the season here, Is the Bass looking good yet and has the vis closed down yet???

Had a cracking day on board the SS Joly Rogers with Ben, Will and Jim today, 5 meters of vis and with Bass, Bream, Dogfish, Mackeral and "others" twas a tastey day to boot.
I'm on limited web access so i'll let one of the others fill in the detail.

Dived Bill point with Kevin Dailey today. Stacks of Bass and Pollock had... nice days fishing. water 12degs, viz 6mtrs in slack dropped to 3mtrs in screaming tide but thats where the fish were!

Went in bicleaves on friday afternoon. Vis was pretty poor 2 - 3m very milky. There was a fair amount of plankton, lots of tiny jellyfish putting on a funky light show. Saw a couple of smaller fish which I left and spooked a decent size fish from a hole in a deeper reef but no chances of a shot, took a pollock of about 2lb.
Nice to get in the water but pretty poor on the fish front.

Up At 6am today to try my new gun out in Portland, bagged these beautys. Vis started at about 4-5mts then about 7.30am the water went down to 2mts and milky and the fish died off, New gun was great though (spearo viper) handles lovely. Im all over the place at the mo and need to get some more water time as not hunted since oct 08. Got me a Canadian canoe to get to the far off little spots around Portland and weymouth, bring it on.

Willi and I ventured out to a new area today in search of 20 lb bass and tame 5 lb bream. Unfortunately they didn't turn up but we covered some lovely ground which looks as though it needs further investigation. We managed to use a friends dive boat so we were chauffered around all day (a bit like yesterday and tomorrow on 'The Jolly Rogers'!). Very kind and great fun. We only saw a handfull of takeable fish with this being the best. A rather good shot straight through the eye socket stoned it a treat.

A great weekend so far, likely to get even better after a day out with Podge and the gang tomorrow. Sun burnt faces all round then!

If it's any help, their supposed to be guaranteed for 3 years by Omer. You might want to contact your supplier. A couple of others on the forum have reported breaking their Omer Ice fins .

Hi all
I finally got the first Bass of the season. I been in Ringstead Bay and a part the great visibility (up to 10 metres when I started but when down to 5-6 when I left) there was no fish at all untill I saw the bass I caught hiding under the kelp, lets say the only think that I saw was the tail and once that he realize that I was around he started to move further but not fast enought to void my spear.On the scale it turned 4 lb and 15 oz big enough for the dinner tonight.
I was really pleased to meet Speardaver even if it was an unconfortable circumstance a that moment, hope it went well later my friend,I noticed you been longer than me into the water.Did you see any fish at all?
