How long can you hold your breath with empty lungs without hyperventilating?

empty lungs

Well I've done it for about a minute before sinking to the bottom of the pool. How long have you been able to do it? A minute seems to be pretty good for empty lungs.

Empty Lung

I've been practicing empty lung statics recently, and the best I did was 2'35 (dry), on a full exhale. I know that Sebastien Murat is a specialist at empty lung statics and he has done much more. Empty lung statics are a great way to check the quality of your blood.

Well yeah but...

Well yeah, but you're one of those 6 minute people aren't you LOL. So we can't use that time as an average "good" time for a non-olympian LOL.

I guess Eric is one of those 7 minute guys :)
I read somewhere that some yogis do 20 minutes on exhale. I guess that approach to empty lungs static should be a bit different than usual. More relaxing, no heavy breathing and stuff like that.

what kind of training would this be classified as? would you think this would have positive benefits if done properly? anyone have any idea of the physio/chemical concepts of this?

happy empty lung-ing,
anderson

Benefits?

As a training tool, Sebastien Murat has been preaching empty lung apnea for a long time, and I'm currently doing some intensive experiments to see how it helps, or if it helps. So far the results seem positive, but it's early.

More than anything, I hope it helps because empty lung statics are far more enjoyable than inhale statics. No struggling with the air, no contractions, and you can drop your hemoglobin saturation as low as you want, with very little effort; and, because they are so short, you can do dozens of them in an hour if you want.

One thing is for sure; empty lung statics are somewhat equivalent to an 'O2 table' in the sense of tolerance to low oxygen; they do nothing for your CO2 tolerance.

for some reason this technique seems alot more beneficial than your co2 tol. drills. at least for spearfishers. personally, i feel i should never desensitize my body's reaction to it's co2 levels, but i could see benefits from working on how it handles the o2 factors. and it seems this would much easier and more effective.

would there be a reason to ventilate prior to this? seems like that might defeat the purpose, unless you're trying to better your times. and, would there be a preference on where one would perform these? ie. wet v. dry?

At least I get harder contractions than in normal static. Or is it just because of bad CO2 tolerance? How do you know how low your hemoglobin saturation is, and how low it can be? Is this the same variable that used to drop when doing IHT?

So, IHT will do? Are there any recommendations how to do IHT the 'right way' and improve co2 tolerance?

Empty Lung Details

Juha,

I recommend doing dry empty lung statics, and I recommend hyperventilating beforehand (only on DRY LAND!!), this makes them much more enjoyable. If you get hard contractions during the empty lung statics, either you didn't breathe enough or your O2 tolerance is very low. Contractions are stimulated by both low O2 and high CO2, or a combination.

After some practice, you will find that during the late part of the empty lung static, your vision starts fading. It's time to breathe. Usually that happens around SaO2 = 50-70%.

From papers I have read, the best results from IHT occur when you practice for a maximum of 1 hour, with 6 hypoxia cycles. However, their hypoxia cycles are longer, so I do 7-8 cycles in one hour, once per day. But, this is still just an experiment, so I can't say that this works well.

Eric,

I've always done this kind of exercises on dry.

But..

when you practice for a maximum of 1 hour, with 7-8 hypoxia cycles
.. do you mean praticing with static holds or with some movement, bicycle, stepper, etc?

And I think it works well if we look at your specifications ;)

Hi Juha,

To reply to your original question I've done a bit short of 2 minutes, on a negative pressure in the bottom of a pool. No hyperventilating of course....
On a negative pressure after a minute I still feel heeps comfortable.
(My best static is only about 5 minutes, although I haven't tried it recently.)

It's amazing how quickly the heart rate comes down compared to doing a normal static. It seems to drop by half within the first ten seconds, I wish I could do that on a normal static !
If I could then I could probably do a 7 or 8 minute static.

Is this maybe what seperates the top competitors, being able to bring the heart rate lower & lower much earlier in the static ?

Walrus, 5 minutes is an outstanding static....you're in the top 4% or something like that. The British team just broke 5 minutes last fall, so pat yourself on the back mate!

Thanks Erik, you say such wonderful things, you really know how to flatter a freediver. :D

By the way my name is Walter, or Wal for short since everyone else is using their actual names.

I love freediving(and scuba) in NSW-Australia, the water is not too cold and lots of cool stuff to see. Mind you I'm a bit jealous of you Canadians, Americans and even now you Britts in being able to get proffesional instruction and go in comps and stuff.

There are some pretty good freedivers in Oz, mostly spearo's, which is something I should get into more. I mostly hangout with Scubies and freedive when they scuba. (Or do shore dives)

I only taught myself freedving over the last couple of years to get better at diving in the ocean. Just mostly practised breathing & doing dynamic apnea in the pool, don't practise statics much anymore. Really enjoy diving in the ocean now that I'm better at it, but If I had the chance I would love to do local comps, or even gasp, be able to train with a buddy.

Maybe one day.

"The British team just broke 5 minutes last fall".....

Sorry Erik, but we have been doing over 5 minutes for quite a long time now, e.g. Howard Jones 5:30 in Sardinia in 1998......it's only that we never had an official infrastructure to record an AIDA UK record.....

Someone has been telling ya porkies m8 ;)

Fair enough Crispin....I was going by the "official" records and announcements on Freediver UK. It's around 5:17 or something like that? I was trying to get my AIDA 5:41 recognised last year, and knew the stats at one time. I'm sure someone will break 6:00 in competition this year.....me hopefully (we'll see)!
I'm training for a competition in Vancouver next month, and my statics are consistently over 6:00 right now.....we all know that competitions are a little different though, eh?
Cheers amigo,
Erik Y.

are we still talking about times on empty lung statics?

andrsn

I wish! Sorry, drifted off topic.....hmmmmm, 6 minute breathless static....wow!
Cheers,
Erik Y.

Sheesh! I just read my comments to Wal and Crispin, and it sounds like I'm a dickhead.:head Usually I'm not one.
I didn't mean anything against Brit freedivers....they are awesome, and Howard Jones is responsible for a lot of good things in Freediving Del Mundo, so my apologies for my crappy typed-word communication.
Cheers amigos and amigas,
Erik Y.:)

I got a little lost back near the start of the thread, I don't know what "IHT" means?

As for times I had a little go at some and got 2'14, but had some strong contractions, as I couldn't hyperventilate much due to being in the middle of a lecture and trying to take notes down:head.

What this means I've no idea:confused:
