FYI, age has little to do with learning to be a very good diver. Careful analysis of what you are doing, learning to relax and go slow is the key to better diving and, IMHO and experience, that is a whole lot easier when a diver is getting a bit long in the tooth. With age, you give up some strength, endurance and aerobic capacity. You gain in slower metabolism and better ability to slow down and analyze what is going on inside your body. At worst, its a wash, at best, you get better with age.
For sure, I've become a much better diver with age and access to good advice. I'm 61, started swimming and surfing at 6, diving at 15, did not advance in freediving capacity from 35 to 55. Discovered DB and have made huge progress since then.

Oh yeah, there is at least one US record holder who is near ancient and did not start diving till late.
