, There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.

Off on holiday for a couple of weeks from the 10th April to do some work on the house ... and maybe see if any fish are around 
Up for local trips if anyone else is free ?
Maybe Herm ? A few outer reefs ? Or for the very adventerous (and boat dependant) ... Les Ecrehous ?! I bet that place is a larder of fish ! (shame it is so far away...)

O & by the way I have posted a letter to the Guernsey Press. The subject is of course "Bass Murder". It would be nice to see some follow up supporting letters from fellow spearos. I have heard so many stories of late, I felt the need to remind the public what is going on.:vangry
I thought Les Ecrehous was a shallow reefy place full of 25 pound bass ?! Maybe I got mixed with Minquiers... still, I reckon a bivy on Lé Bliantch'Île et La Marmotchiéthe would be good (http://www.societe-jersiaise.org/langsec/ecrehous.html).
Oh well guess it will be local beach dives again.
As for the bass ... I have heard alarming stories of huge hauls ... give it five years and they will be a rare sight in our waters.

Good letter mate, unfortunately it seems sea fisheries think they are the Department for the Protection of the Short Term Interests of Commercial Fishermen, not the department responsible for the protection of our marine environment.

Hi All,
Thought I would take the time to introdcue myself now I have made a few posts.
Name is Andy Marquis, known as FishingGuernsey on other forums you may visit or if you are also an angler I wrote and try to run effectively the website www.fishing-guernsey.co.uk.
I am a sea angler but have been giving thought to the spear fishing and a few years back in the time BC (Before child), got myself a mask with prescription lenses so I didn't shoot that big bass that was actually a swimmer, also got the flippers and snorkel and all that, just didn't get a gun.
Intend to try and get in the water this year now the nipper is bit older but depends if I get time and the water is warm enough! I don't mind ormering in the cold but swimming is something different, technically when i went ormering with Magpie I wasn't swimming, just ended up as wet as if I had been.
I am the Regional Co-Ordinator for the Channel Islands for the Sea Anglers Conservation Network and am hence keen on catch and release and the protection of fish stocks etc. I am likely to become very unpopular with anyone who exploits Bass fishingnaughty ) off the west coast in the near future though I don't want any nasty phone calls so am likely to stick to the facts and not target any particular group for their actions, only those for their lack of actions (States of Guernsey here I come...).
Any questions on conservation please do ask and I will tell you I need to find out the answer :hmm . On the other hand, if you have any information you wish to share or online/electronic versions of any consultation paper, regulation etc which may be of use to me, I am not going to say no to a copy so drop me an email to andy@fishing-guernsey.co.uk

I believe I was one of the first to write to the press regarding the bass issue. Obviously spearos dont operate on a catch & release basis but we do have the selective advantage. All the local spearos I now will be on your side & I personally know some of the commercial boys will be as well (although they may not voice their opinion publicly) I dont think I can offer any facts that you would not already know, most of my info comes from my fishermen friends ( obversly not those involved in the slaughter) but might not be factual.
I spoke to Rapala today & he thinks the press will wait for the sea fisheries to reply before publishing any more of our letters?

If you need any advice on kit give any one of us a shout - more than willing to help you get sorted out. Went out with Tom last month to show him the ropes but ended up not showing him much at all and buggering off to deeper water ... ooops ! Sorry Tom. Will try harder next time
Went in this morning and was about 8C ... diving 5m and relatively clear ... no fish but I was just in to balance a new gun (Teak 80 : http://forums.deeperblue.net/showthread.php?t=63452&page=4 ).
Did have a sneaky look for some early season plaice but ran out of time as had to get back to the cement mixer
Season is about to start again ....
