Another piece of pointless legislation. I wonder how many people it wil effect in the Island? Not many less than 10? Certainly the few 'youngsters' I've seen spearfishing have appeared very responsible in their attitude, as has everybody I've ever met.

Whats the really daft bit if you ask me is "participating in supervised sporting activities controlled by a recognised sporting club or organisation"

By its very nature spearfishing is something you generally participate in singly, even if you 'go in' with someone you make sure you keep out of their range when hunting.

Also I'm not aware of any current Spearfishing Club in the Island? Therefore, by default, spearfishing by anyone under 18 will be illegal?

So when my 16yo wants to come out with me next year I'll have to form the Rocquaine Spearfishing Club (or something similar) to be able to take him with me (legally)?

The whole "club" thing sucks. It propagates red tape and manufactures paperwork.

Practically anything can be used as a weapon... from a bottle to a pillow(!) ...the crux has to be in the 'intent to cause harm.'

It's a stupid bit of legislation, IMHO, because there will already be a law that says "don't harm anyone."

I knew about these proposals a while ago and have made my thought on them, as a spearo and as a shooter, known.

OMD and Foxy have also had their say.

When I spoke to the police on the subject, I was lead to believe crossbows were more of a concern. However there has been several instances where the police have actually been threatened with spear guns!
I am not at liberty to discuss the details of our correspondence but my suggestions did not include the necessity of being a club member. Lets wait & see.

I checked the Billet and there's no guidance of what is meant by "recognised club" but I would say that most of the people on this thread are already effectively a club, with as much experience between them than any other club. We could no doubt very easily become a club just by subscribing to a Constitution.

Beardy - how about the theme from Jaws, or Octopus's Garden? Seriously, what would really would be useful would be a waterproof walkie talkie - I'm sure they must exist!

As your talking equipment. If I'm going to start diving next year I'm probably best of using a prescription mask as I'm short sighted rather than contacts as I don't get on with them.

Anyone use them or know of a decent place to get one from?

I had some swimming goggles from Specsavers which are fine (too strong but ok).

I was quoted about £70 from Specsavers for my son - or you could wear contacts plus a normal mask. Don't know if anywhere's any cheaper, but they're usually reasonable.

You can get a range of lenses for certain masks as standard. Graham Eker stocks them and you can check out the DB shop/internet etc. For most people this works fine.

I need a rather special perscription as my eyes are quite different. I get my glasses from specsavers. If you have your eyes tested and you tell them you want a mask they will write down all your details for you. I got my perscription for good vision at mid distance (about 15 foot). Remember water magnifies as well. I then had lenses made and bonded to the inside of my mask by a specialist diving/optical company in the UK. Works perfect. last set up cost about £70 some 7 or 8 years ago + cost of mask. Have the name of the firm somewhere but would need to look it up.

Ed uses a pair of specs minus arms inside his mask. Cheap and cheerful. never been able to make that work myself but he manages fine.

Always use contacts myself, at first one day ones, but now the monthly constant wear jobbies, and never had a problem, well one popped out once to bordeaux but the mask saved it so I just swam to some rocks and put it back in.

Them MP3 players might not be that useful for freediving, but I'd imagine they were spot on for these muppets that go to Beausie and swim hundreds of length at 6am in the morning...like my girlfriend!

I can say without any doubt that i've seen that film well in excess of 30 times.It was the only film we had on a lap top during a long sailing trip,that said,i still love it.

looks like im going to have to try and get in the water as much as posible just in case these laws come in about spear guns, ill probably be 18 by the time the laws are passed mind. just hope i dont get stopped on my motor bike with my speargun on my back.

This could be bad news for me then if these new laws are passed:rcard . But who is going to sit on a beach all day and night checking you are 18 before you go spearfishing. What would be better is a license to buy/use a speargun and if you are under 18 is that someone that's over 18 with there license says you are responsible to own one to who ever is in charge of the licenses.

I have a mask from Specsavers with prescription lenses though took the lenses out and put the standard ones back and using my contacts. lenses are both -2 if that's any help in buying a non prescription mask from them (will have to check the model for you) and you can chuck them in if they are close to what you use. not wanting to get shot from you mistaking me for the mother of all floating bass... must be cheaper without prescription?

My eyes are under -2 but I've got an astigmatism in both eyes so I haven't been able to use normal lenses until now as they have recently released toric lenses which are weighted to allow the lenses to correct for the shape. Unfortunately there are only two makers of these toric lenses at the moment and I haven't managed to find a pair I can keep in for 24 hours as my eye's react badly to them and they get blurry/itchy so I don't fancy using them much yet as I'm not bothered about wearing glasses.

I've used the specsavers goggles (-2) and they help enough to snorkel and jetski on holiday so I might just get the mask at least I'll have an excuse when I miss!

I have been using Focus dailie toric lenses for allmost two years now, at first i found they dried my eyes up as well but i just put up with it and now they seem to be fine but you can get a eye drop which is ment to stop your eys from drying up.
when i first started wering them i found that when i used them sperfishing my eyes didnt dry up at all i suppose it was the odd bit of sea water going in my eyes. I think perscripstion lenses are probably the better option for safty as contacts are known to float out ocasanaly

The Specsavers chap did say that if you wear lenses under a mask, there is an outside chance of getting an eye infecion if water gets in - but they're probably just covering their wotsits.

I don't suppose anyone's found any corner of the island that has more than 6" vis in the last week or so?!! There might be a small window around the low on Sunday - but the Magic Seaweed forecast keeps changing! I don't think I'll hold my breath - unless it's under water!
