Jonny I have been thinking about Eds comments & I would say the best catches I have had (although not my best catch) as a general rule were on flat calm days with good vis, middle of the day in the middle of summer - good luck!

Well the rod danglers' competition this weekend was cancelled, I understand, so it probably doesn't bode well, unless you can find a sheltered spot with good vis - also at night as the low tides fall this weekend.:)

The best catch I had was at end October, on a 2.8m tide, in fairly windy choppy conditions, just before sunset. But that might only apply to that particular spot! I'll have to check the stats I did and see what conditions correlate with the best catches! Sad I know, but I feel a pivot table coming on ...

NE might be a bit sheltered, with both wind and swell forecast westerly, although magic seaweed shows a 5 star surf forecast in the afternoon! Let us know how you get on if you do go, as I would like to nip in to test my recently repaired gun.:)

I have a funny feeling it might be a better use of time to get on with the Christmas shopping and decorations though!:head

Super catch OMD - the King of Sole:king. Are they Dover sole or Lemon Sole or some other kind? (Or are those just size guides rather than species)

They're dover soles. Lemon soles we don't have here. Lemon soles are more closely related and look like plaice. Dovers are THE sole to catch. They're the ones that cost a second mortgage in fancy restaurants. They grow to about 7lb but anything over 4lb is a real biggy. Dovers are 99% nocturnal and are very hard to spot in the daytime as they bury very well. I catch a fair few in daylight but you need to be good at prodding suspicious lumps to find them. It's easier to spot them at night as they are uncovered and active. However night diving brings its own problems so it sort of balances out.

Dave

I play guitar in one band and drums in another....... 'The Omega Project' often to be seen in Weymouth (Excise house)

UK C8 with rechargables. Run it on the 13 watt bulb (it has twin bulbs with the other one a 20 watt) so as to get 2 hours burn time. Cost about £80. Looking forward to seeing Podges Princeton Tec version with 3 x 3watt LED's. Might upgrade to that. About £80 with 8 ordinary C cells. Can't justify the £150 - £200 for a FAMI or similar.

Overall the UK C8 has proved to be a great torch for our conditions. I'm pleased withit although LED is the way to go now.

Dave

PS Have to say I admire anyone who can play an instrument as I definitely can't :rcard.

Well cant say I have ever seen that before! but I did catch one in daylight from my boat once.

Having been unable to get in the water this week, I'm thinking about an early morning trip tomorrow. I've managed a few dawn swims but never seen much about. Can anyone tell me whether to expect any fishes at dawn or do they all go to bed at sun-up?
Anyone want to join me? it's gonna be SW windy :-( so maybe in a bay on the NW/NE side?

Not looking good for the weekend. Our thrash round the cans on Sunday is looking unlikely. Just got back from the UK so hopefully a bit of the east coast may prove possible, used to go out from Bec du Nez but not sure if my knees are up to it any more!

Congrats OMD, fine catch.

The weather is looking a bit pants eh!! Need somewhere to post stuff... Forum withdrawal kicking in... need to write rubbish... someone get me my forum back... AAarrrggghhhh...!!!

Think I confused a few peeps there. Sorry 'bout that!! My Guernsey dangling forum is down at present. What am I supposed to do with my time?? I might have to actually go fishing or spearing or something?? If it's down much longer i'll have to go to the docs and get something for it...

Hey, UK Spearo, I did a google for 'The omega project' as I was interested in your band - first result was interesting, I guess it's not you - and I'm glad my young son wasn't looking :) I played with a couple of groups when I was in the UK - Bluegrass and contemporary Christian music, great fun.
The FAMI power 40 torch I got was £124 from Tony backhurst in case that is of interest.
ADM i dunno if the docs have anything for your sort of virus :)

I have to admit that the tiles being rattled off the roof and the size of the waves over Lion Rock this morning put me off going for a dip, maybe this evening if I find a sheltered spot.. i'll look up Bec du nez grob. I might have to resort to a swimming pool...

Here are a couple of pictures of one of my favourite spearfish spots - I prefer it a bit calmer normally. also one of yesterdays surfing action just for interest.
I went in search of bec du nez yesterday, hoping for a sheltered spot, but I couldn't find anywhere remotely close to park (i gave up and went to Petit Bot where it was Harry Roughers, at which point i just gave up!)

Bec Du Nez is down the east coast cliffs mate and you won't find anywhere close to park unless you own a boat! Not a small trek down and more importantly back up with your diving gear.

Here's a few more pics of spearing spots looking a bit angry and a quick vid, yes, the noise is the wind, and one sneak preview of the project I've been working on in leu of getting wet...

It was looking rough out west today. I stopped at Vazon on the way through to parents way out west and it was hard to tell if there was surf out there or not. Might have been somewhere in the sprey but couldn't see through. Took a few pics on the film camera so you'll either have to buy me a digital SLR or wait for the slides to come back for scanning...

There were some brave souls fishing the end of the castle breakwater this afternoon on my way home. Assume they must have lashed themselves to the railings or something?
