I F****ng detest gillnets, I will always try and destroy them if I can get rid of them in one go without leaving them behind as a dangerous legacy to others! Indiscriminate slaughtering devices is what they are, not fit for any purpose!!! :rcard:rcard Happy Xmas.

Happy Christmas Everyone.

Off skiing tomorrow and snow looks bloody fantastic. This is the webcam pic as of now, Mont Blanc is top right and you can see the main runs down to the village in the middle of the pic. Did 54.8mph on my skis (according to my gps) going down there last year....woo hoo!!!

See you all in the water next year.

Andy

On TV recently (River Cottage?), they showed Cornish fishermen starting to target pilchards (sardines) again, by laying gill nets from small boats. They explained that the mesh size is critical for selecting the species: too big and the fish pass through, too small & the fish bounce off. I was left thinking it sounds like the perfect way to select the size & species caught...then I remembered the story posted by a forum member about getting caught up in a gill net and finding a drowned dog stuck in it:( (what size species was that net targetting?!).

Have a good one Andy. We're not going to see Mrs Sarnian's brother in Laax/Falera this year as they're expecting a happy event - still, we might yet have a white Christmas here!

Anyone going diving in the harbour? Might be interesting around the breakwater, if you can dodge the lines:)

I see those effing trawlers are at it around our waters again, allegedly fishing for horse mackerel:vangry:rcard

It's been calm for a few days now but I suppose like everyone else I've been busy with Christmas things. However, bit of free time today so went for a dive which is first daytime one for a month or so.

Went way down west on the off chance a big bass had lost its way and wandered in from the Boue Blondel just offshore. Unfortunately although it was flat calm inshore a big swell was breaking over the outer reefs and I could see it didn't look good. Compromised and went a bit more inshore in the same ares. No swell but crap vis. About 2 to 3 foot past the end of the gun when held out in hunting position. Not good. Five minutes in I saw a small bass which saw me and left the scene a bit quicker than I could react. An hour later and that was the only living thing I'd seen. No wrasse, mullet, smelt, not even any shore crabs. Then there was the cold. It was bloody freezing. Would really liked to have kept going but after an hour I was not confident I could have aimed and fired the gun with my shaking blue hands.

Time for home, central heating, coffee and minced pies. Should have gone at night.

Glutton for punishment I went in tonight. Suit was still wet (obviously) and conditions were even worse in that the high tide had exagerated the swell. Had to hunt around to find somewhere with safe entry through the surf. Vis was not good but fishable, Only looked shallowish for a bass and saw precisely one squid, which I had no interest in spearing. Stayed in an hour then went home in my suit. Half an hour in the spa, followed by a roast chicken dinner and a few hot drinks and I am nearly up to normal temperature.

Not my most productive day diving but for me it beats blobbing in front of the box.

Dave

Yes Dave better than watching telly but we were having a fire party with a few rich friends eating one of you previous catches (a big sole).
I only mention rich friends because one had brought a £250 bottle of red whine which I put a piece of chocolate in my second glass because I thought it a bit bitter!! I had already spilt my first glass all over the table. Still a great Christmas party!

Blimey! Am I the only sane Foxy brother?????
OMD divesTWICE in one day during the coldest weather this year and with a decent swell rolling in [ saw plenty of surfers yesterday ] and needs the hot-spa to avoid 'freezing to death'.
We all know what it feels like to suffer 'spearfishing withdrawal symptoms'
But itches should be scratched with fingernails; not hand-grenades!!!
Titanic efforts bro' but watch out for icebergs!

Meanwhile young Foxfish sets up a Bacchanalian orgy where £250 wine is used as paint-spray!!!!
