On TV recently (River Cottage?), they showed Cornish fishermen starting to target pilchards (sardines) again, by laying gill nets from small boats. They explained that the mesh size is critical for selecting the species: too big and the fish pass through, too small & the fish bounce off. I was left thinking it sounds like the perfect way to select the size & species caught...then I remembered the story posted by a forum member about getting caught up in a gill net and finding a drowned dog stuck in itI F****ng detest gillnets, I will always try and destroy them if I can get rid of them in one go without leaving them behind as a dangerous legacy to others! Indiscriminate slaughtering devices is what they are, not fit for any purpose!!! :rcard:rcard Happy Xmas.
