Guernsey 2008

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
In spite of the gales at the mo, Wednesday or Thursday could be ok for a dive with less swell forecast and lighter winds; guess it depends on how churned up the water is - i'm thinking of taking a visit to moulin huet - anyone up for that?

Worth a try mate, me and Ed had sole, reds and bass in there a while ago. Good luck seeing anything after these winds though.

South is fairly sheltered but as you saw Tom, the viz in saints was pants on Saturday PM, from above water at least, certainly no more than 2ft near the surface.

Vis tends to clear quicker this time of year. Bad vis is mainly due to sand/silt etc in suspension caused by rough seas, especially big swells. Not much organic matter such as plankton in the water this time of year as there is not enough light (temp not so important). However, after the worse vis in living memory for the first part of the year we are now having some of the worse weather for years. 2008 is gonna go down as the worse year for diving in my 40 years experience.

Having said all that you gotta go to know for sure anyway. Good example from a few weeks ago when one night the vis was good in Rousse and poor in Les Amareurs only a few hundred yards apart and another day when vis was zero at Beucette and a clear 20 foot in Pembroke.

My problem is that although I look to go virtually daily I like decent vis and don't often "chance it". Just getting old I'm afraid.

Dave

I took a wander out along the rocks on the west coast this morning - could see the bottom in about 2m water, so vis looks ok; still some swell coming in tho, should be ok at low tide on the south i hope...

Looked ok at Saints last night, as much as you can tell from the shore. Didn't catch owt but pout though.

Oh ha ha. The driving down is fine, its the going back up when its rained in the interim that's more of a problem! Bloney shiny granite :headStill, I've left a load of rubber behind to assist anyone in a similar predicament rofl

Well i decided to have a go this morning, in at 1100 down south east. the sea was flat calm and the water looked pretty good as i walked down to the beach.
vis was in fact excellent, one of the best this year i'd say, although it got worse later on once the tide turned.
3 hours in, not too cold, Sauunto said 11 degrees.
I saw a few mullets and bass, generally on the edge of vis and out of range (took the short gun but wanted the long one!). Anyway finally managed a nice mullet and then a small bass, the bass took me by surprise as i turned a corner around a rock and there it was, bang.

here's a vid of the mullet - played a bit of a game to finally catch him tho :)

i dont think i'm doing the video editing quite right - always seems really low res on youtube - what size do you guys use? (i also add that &fmt=18 on the end which apparently improves it a bit??).

We know why you really went down there at night ;)

looks nice but you're still not tempting me to go in the water... Maybe next year...

sorry ADM you get me there??

there's always next year... is it going to be better next year?? hope so :).
interesting how perspective affects things - i thought it was a pretty good year (nothing to compare it to), but i'm sure there's people here who would say it's been the worst for ages... mind you last september/october were soo calm...

Worst year I've known, not that I've known as many as some....Feel like I haven't been in all year.

Well I can confirm it has been the worst year as regards weather in my memory but as spearfishing is only one of my many interest I have been busy doing other things.
(best year for mushroom hunting in my memory)

Well I assumed with the name of the vid you were at that place, who's carpark is frequented by certain "types" at night. Not been back there at night since that night I went fishing there many moons ago... [insert scared smilie here!!]

How do you know these thing Andy and you a married man?

Any vis reports from anyone out there gratefully recieved. Fancy a go tomorrow night (maybe even day).

Dave

It was an accident, honest gov. I didn't know about "that stuff" going on there before I happened across it.

No idea about the viz but watch out for nets, trots and the 2,000 anglers out there on every mark I went to tonight before I chucked my peelers, squid and mackerel and came home.

Ah, thanks for clarifying that for me ADM, the stuff you learn eh? ;-) onest guv i was going fishing...
sorry dave not sure about the vis at the mo, but i'll hope to get in tomorrow too (was going to go tonite, but i'm knackered.).
