Translucent fibreglass eh!? Very nice. Never seen them before. What sort are they? Omer pockets but I'm guessing thats off your Ice.

Actually, looking at it again there's a very strong light from the right so that explains the translucence. They Pegasos?

NB: the bag they are resting on is the NEW Omer techno bag which is just too short for the fins! not going to be much use taking my fins on holiday :-(

yes Tom, Omer Pegaso fins, new footpockets too. The fins are the Medium stiffness.
The omer bag is very strong and well made, but is supposed to be 10cm longer than the original techno bag, can understand why they didnt make it 95cm instead of 90, to get the fins in without removing the blades?
I also picked up a new omer stubby knife - very good and ideal for the kayak (i keep throwing them overboard..).

So - you you half empty two beautiful nature reserves ponds during the bird breeding season & put the water in to a landfill, then you pump the disgustingly filthy water into another small pond the add some air bubbles then pump it into our once beautiful sea!
For two months!!

The water was taken from the outflow pipes, not directly from the pond or the quarry, so the water level was not supposed to change at all (I say not supposed to cos I've no idea if it actually did or not, so thought it best to add that just in case you've witnessed different).

They have always pumped the treated leachate out of that same pipe since the quarry was deep enough to produce it. Admittedly not in the same quantities. How else do you suggest they dealt with the fire?

I don't know how else they could deal with it Tom, but its one of those things which I also am uneasy about. Its all very well publically declaring that its not a problem, but I for one am always suspicious of sweeping statements which are not backed up by fact.

If they were to produce figures showing the levels of the various substances contained in the leachate, the surrounding water and the background levels then I would be happy.

Its the same with the sewage in Belle Greve. I have sailed in the bay for the last 40 years and am sure that the amount of 'pollution' is now far worse than it ever was in the past. Whenever it is questioned we are told that it is perfectly safe yet this is never backed up by fact. (at least not that I am aware of)

Hoping to get in at the weekend if conditions permit, life has been really busy recently and (as OMD would say) has 'got in the way' Its over a month since I was last in the water. Don't see many fish reports yet from those of you whove been in so there must be plenty of fish for merofl

It's all good and well not liking it mate and of course, in an ideal world, it wouldn't be happening, but something did have to be done because the island sure as hell isn't going to stop producing waste so we need somewhere to put it or a way to deal with it, and if it was left much longer the tip would have started to cave in making it totally unsafe to use and leaving us with a growing pile of festering crud and no idea what to do with it.

I don't like it, but I don't like lots of neccessities, like vegetables!

PS. 20 years of swimming, diving, bait and food collecting in Bellegrave with no ill effects is enough to convince me it's ok in there. Again, it's not ideal, but it's not the end of the world.

All just my opinion of course, nothing more.

I agree John - went past Salarie on the way to work and all looking quite clear (from a quick glance from above at 15mph on a bike ). Dug out Carlos Eyles - Last of the blue water hunters last night whist going through stuff - anyone know where I can buy a new copy ? Amazon don't appear to stock it any more ?

Went down L'ancresse last night for a bit of fly fishing. Bit of a waste of time on that front as I could only fish for half an hour or so as the middle rocks I was standing on started to cover. I don't have waders so couldn't get deep enough in wellies on the beach to avoid the weed clogging up the shallows. Literally rafts of the stuff!! When I was on the middle rocks the vis looked really good. I suppose it was about 2m of water and it looked clear as I have ever seen it. Thinking of going in near the stonecrusher at fort le marchant and making my way round the back this afternoon as Low is about 5. Anyone been there before? Any particularly good spots or anything I should watch out for? Apart from the potters that regularly disrupt my shooting that is!!!

OMD is your man for info on Fontenelle methinks (is that where you meant?); good luck...

I fish fontenelle all the time. Can't say I get much. It's better between fontenelle and fort doyle. Lots of tide though and deeper than the bay. Probably 10 - 15m. I've had a fair few bass there including my biggest ever at 7 1/2 llb. I know - not a monster - but I was well chuffed. Round the corner from there between fort doyle and beaucette is good too. Swim out to the cardinal beacon. I've had plenty there. 7m ish depth.

PS - just picked up my new drysuit! Can't wait to try it out!!!! Cost me a small fortune....

Just been in at Bordeaux. Easily fishable vis, but not as good as it has been recently. Probably about 3m but with a greenish brown murk and not to many visible floating bits. As Tom said it will just be very fine, suspended silt.
One bass about 3lb. Fairly poor shot as it had clocked me and was making its escape but I wanted some fish for tea! In through the side and out just behind the gill plate on the other. Changed my mind on the location on the recommendation of my dad as its where he has had success when he used to sf as a lad. Thought I would give it a go.
I got in at the moorings in the middle of the beach to the right of Bordeaux and swam around the large cluster of rocks in the middle of the bay. As I was getting in I spooked a small shoal of mullet in the shallow water, it cant have been more than 10" deep! At the tip of the bank of the rocks where you meet open water the stringweed was at a 45degree angle and running quite fast. I got the bass here and after I shot it a group of monster mullet came to have a look. I continued along the margin of the rock and water with the running tide on my left and the slower moving water on my right. It is strange how moving less than a metre to either side can make the difference between being motionless and being pulled along at quite some speed! Never really experienced this kind of a run before but there seemed to be more life about in this kind of water. I need to get some decent fins to really get the best out of this kind of mark.
Anyway, I carried on across the bay to the very right of the beach and hit a much stronger running tide. One that I could just about cope with but not one I would like to be in on a heavy spring! The weed was nearly flattened on the seabed and the further out I went the stronger it got. After this I backtracked on myself and got out. Not a bad evening and not too cold. Was nice to be in the water again after a few weeks off. Anyone other than Jonny in today? How did you get on Jonny? New fins noticeably different?

Good report Nick, good shot too but I'd expect that from you eh!

One of my most productive spots round there, the tides are fun as long as you know where they go and where you can get out of them. Not a place to be taken lightly though. You want some proper fins you won't get better that Jonny's Ice.

I went in at the wells; had a dive round there for a bit, but wasnt comfortable, not sure why, and wasnt diving at all well. vis was very clear and i could see the bottom detail in 8m. I decided to move on round to the right which improved things for me. Vis deteriorated as the tide started coming in but there were lots of small baitfish around - billions of them!!
managed some small pollacks (my son's fave!) and also a double wammy on 2 golden greys
The new fins are great, quite different from the ice's though, stiffer so that swimming on the surface is quite different and i found myself splashing more, need to work on that. On the bottom the Pegasos are fine and on the way back up they give a good push
well done nick on what sounds like a good dive and a nice fish.

Went again today. Same place. Vis was rubbish, about half the distance of yesterday and much more of a murk. I saw a couple big mullet again but didnt bother taking a shot. My brother was examining a chancre on the bottom to see whether it was of a takeable size when a good bass swam past at a good speed with the rip. It wasn't.
