Seagulls can be in large groups or on their own, greater black back gulls are more likely to be singular.
Basking sharks were once killed for there oil. (probably still are)

foxfish have you tried butter-poached lobster ? It was the French Laundry's signature dish , and so I suppose must be one of the best dishes in the world . ( French Laundry voted best restaurant in the world more than once . )
Never tried it with a cray but it should work the same .

The big cray we ate last night was cooked in clarified butter & was exceedingly succulent as were the 28 half lobster tails.
I guess it depends on your individual taste but there is something about eating grilled lobster outside in the summer, maybe it is the smell of slightly charred shell?
I think you could take it a step further buy offering the butter poached tail alongside the grilled claws or possibly replacing the poached tails in a pre grilled shell & just touching over the top with a flame gun?

Mart you are the master of such grills and BBq lobster! I'm so sorry that i couldn't join you after the food but i worked late to make up for swimming during the day :-( The photos of the cray are great - what an amazing creature!
my lungs are completely knackered again after trying to dive yesterday :-( so more time out and probly more pills :-(

Thanks Foxfish. I really need to name a public house in Tane after you. The Fox & Fish or maybe the Fishing Fox. Does that seem plausible? I'm already considering naming a fishing vessel the Magpie.

Anyway, allow me to draw your attention to my questions about oily fish. Are there any fish in your waters deemed particularly oily, and are there specially oily (like the liver, but not limited to that) or especially "dry" parts of those fish?

Mackerel are the only common oily fish but as I said basking sharks were killed for their oil, it was used to fire lamps & lubricate machinery.

And do you know if one can just cut the mackerel open and squeeze the oil out or grab a hunk of muscle and rub it on something, or are there particular organs that have most of the oil?

The only time mackerel oil is really noticeable to me is when I cook the fillets in a pan, if you are cooking quite a few then the oil builds up in the pan.
Apart from that I cant really say?

Lovely day today, we went out for a couple of hours in my boat, not far just to the Doyle.
Usual 20 maks + two bream & a starfish!

Nice one! We took our visitors to Herm and it was a perfect day - they were blown away. In the harbour I saw this strange craft which looks like a sawn-off catamaran! Anyone know what it is? Sorry, not very good phone photos.

Foxy, you are bang on about rough weather or a coast of consistent heavy swell, especially affecting a skiboat fishing club that mostly launch through the surf and blat it back in again right up the beach...cat's are excellent...

Lovely looking boats mate but the BW range are displacement hulls, not as fast, not as nice to look at but they can get 20knots with small motors & handle very rough weather without leaving the water.

I managed to get in the water today, only the second time since june! the vis was surprisingly good - probably chose a good spot too.. saw quite a few fish - mainly mullet, including one huge one maybe 8lbs - got the moment on video but didnt shoot as i already had a 4.5lber on the stringer
saw a few bass, not too large and moving too fast for me!
unfortunately the lack of swimming paid its toll and i cramped up really badly, first my left leg, then the right, then both! managed to swim with my hands to a rock and just sucked air for a few minutes - been a while since i've had cramp like that! thought i was in a bit of trouble there crutch
on the positive side, my dives were ok, a little uncomfortable, but not surprising really given the lack of swimming, managed a shallow 1:27, so pleased with that. saw lots of smaller fish, including a big shoal of pollacks and a vividly painted rocky - brilliant!
