Went in for a spear again today. More bass hunting but this time down west. Despite huge swells over the outer reefs i found a nice sheltered spot with good vis. Within 5 minutes stealthed a 3lb bass, spooked it and then got it with a long range shot as it departed. My modified omer XXV Gold is proving a big hit (pun 
). Saw a few small shoals of similar sized or smaller bass but let them pass.
Moved out to a little corner that has given a couple of better bass in the past. Made a complete balls of it and spooked a 4lb-er. Saw quite a few mullet and wrasse but let all except one 6lb wrasse pass by.
Eventually the tide pushed in and I headed back. Was stealthing the very (18inch) shallows mainly for practice but also on the off chance of a fish. Worked out where the fish were hiding behind some reefs with little clumps of string weed. They were mullet, mainly small but a few mediums. I was just tracking and pulling off an imaginary shot at a small mullet when I suddenly realised there was a big fish right in front of me. A near 5lb bass decided it didn't like the look of me and cleared off at high speed. If only I had been concentrating :head:rcard:head.

For one reason or another I have not been diving this year but as the boys are coming over soon I thought I should at least sort out my gear & get in the water!
So I went in down by the Islands at Bordeaux, unfortunately I forgot my weight belt but decided to go in with my vest & ankle weights only!

In this afternoon at 4. Went in at Grande Rocque. In about 1 1/2 hours one bass seen and taken at just under 7Lb. Nice to be back in the water again after a bit of a break due to other commitments and the terrible weather!

Back from my couple of weeks in southern Brittany. A great time had by all. Not much diving though, we were in a similar weather pattern to here coupled with the fact that where we were based (on the coast nr Pont Aven) faces straight out into the Bay of Biscay so there was a lot of swell running most of the time.
Brief report as follows
Water temp 18-19c Big swell a lot of the time. Viz not very good due to the swell.
Species broadly the same as here although just slightly different. Quite a few sea urchins and small starfish, seaweed the same although in different distribution plus there were a couple of different species.
There is a large sandbank which on spring tides is about 1m under water. Totally barren of flatfish, but thousands of clams. You could dive down and using your fingers as a rake through the sand pick up 5-6 on each dive so very easy to get a feed. They were the small sweet ones called vongole.
Saw lots of bass, but all tiny along with a few mullet and rockfish. Generally all the fish were small (too small for me to take) Lots of shoals of small fish at a guess sardines/anchovies (or similar)
Lots of other spearos around who didn’t seem to catch anything apart from small female spiders.
The family next door to us on the campsite had a small inflatable which they used to go to the small offshore islets on and caught a 32kg conger near the Ile Verte one day – big fish!!
Gear wise looked at lots but only bought some new booties with soft soles that fit into my flippers yet are hardwearing for walking down the beach. Noticed that one guy was using flippers with a slot on the bottom near the foot pocket with weights in. (like using ankle weights I guess)
Back in Guernsey went in on Sunday afternoon and bagged a couple of golden greys off L’Eree. Ate them last night and really nice they were too, nice firm flesh.

Ps – Dave brilliant idea with the ‘lifters’ explains why I thought my Omer HF has crap aim I’ll be doing something similar soon.

Interesting report Andy, 32kg that would bend your spear!
I went in again this evening, slightly better than last time because I actually saw quite a few bass!
Nice vis, perfect conditions, not much in the way of shootable bass but lots in the 1 - 2lb range + a few big wrasse & mullet too.

Good to hear it's worth going somewhere.
I went to Bordeaux, coudn't see much past the end of me spear. Mooched around for 20 minutes and thought sod this so got out and drove up to Pembroke.
Got in, couldn't see the end of the spear, let alone past it, got out, stomped back to the van and went home in a right strop.

i havent been in for 5 or 6 weeks due to flu, work, etc and now the doc say i have an allergic cough = dog biscuit size pills :-( !
still its going to be epic for the Guernsey fish-in in a couple of weeks... big high pressure waiting to settle...

I'm off to the Doc this morning for the third time in a month. Still can't shift my ear infection and it's really spoiling my diving. It's the DB Guernsey fish-in soon and need to be fit.

It's hard work fishing at the moment... Lots of hours and not even a bite. Not a rockie on peeler in the day nor a rat on peeler in the dark. Not even a bit infact. Very Weird. What's going on??

Hope the factory Triaxx is better balanced than my Triaxx barrelled mongrel gun Mart.
I've had to wedge a 3inch block of polystyrene between the forward bars to give it a load more bouyancy, which kind of negates the point of the gun!

I had a bass off the L'ancresse Slip the night before last on live eel. I went again last night using peeler on the wall at the Pembroke side as there were fishermen lining pembroke beach and a guy fishing in front of L'ancresse slip. Not a bite. Nice evening though. Much better than sitting at home watching TV or whatever. Starting to regret not going for a dive after work looking at the weather this morning!
