Guernsey 2013

Not really topical other than its earning me holiday credits for the Guernsey meet and the weather is nice???......but sadly the only time I can get wet is in errrrr...quite a terminal fashion :( ...so I have to be 'in' the sea all day long but can't get 'in' :yack :waterwork

anyway those with vertigo look away now....

and for a little perspective......(those microwave dishes up near the top of the white accomodation)

at least I get to see some nice wildlife occasionally and some of the fish you see schooling under these things are errrr... large!? :D

Hahaha! it's not as glamorous as the pictures make it look :mute....it usually involves climbing and wriggling into places and small spaces people either haven't been to in 20'odd years (in some power stations that can be 50'odd!), don't intend to ever go to, or simply can't be bothered to go to!! and it's usually full of all manner of delights ranging from 40+degC in 6" of coal dust or ash, to dead pigeons! even 'p!ss!ng on you' fruit bats, and rat infested household waste incinerator rubbish pits!.......aye! 'what a job you have!!' .....

.......but admittedly it does have it's moments! ;) :D

Got in down Rocquaine last night, as expected viz was on the soupy side of the spectrum. Plenty of mullet wizzing around in the gloom and the odd bar of silver. I was diving the string weed/ reef in the middle of the beach at mid-high.

Divulging these details as I very nearly stabbed myself on some re-bar poking up. Please be careful down there. I was lucky in that i swam into it side on not point first which could have happend if I was going the other way, and as there was lots of swell I could have quite easily been lowered on to it. I couldnt shift it last night, but will have a go next time im down if i can find it again.

Anyway fun dive, apart from the sharp rusty spike, ended up with a nice bass and a good sun set.

good effort Fro. the oyster beds always amaze me - shame theyre not used any more - although a few seem to have filled bags. i like to look underneath them at night to see what's hiding...
have you seen any daytime flatties Fro?

hey jonny, no flatties so far im afraid, just havent looked, the last couple of sets of springs i've either been looking on rocky ground for lobsters or its been mid week or blowing a gale. next week hopefully though. I know of certain spots that would hold flatties on a neap but at the moment i'm just not bothered diving that deep (out of practice).

The Jersey lot seem to be doing ok with the flatties, I was over there 3 weeks ago and there were spearo's wandering off the beach with plaice.

you had any luck recently?

had a lovely swim/dive yesterday evening; around the back of lihou on the rising tide. not very fishy but a stunning location in the flat water and calm wind. i was just enjoying the tide/drift around the island and then got out and walked back accross to the submerged causeway. wading across was very hard work even in just a few feet of water - i would swim back next time or time it for a lower tide...
managed 2 mullet at 5lbs and a bass about 3.5 lbs. also think i saw trout, but i seem to think that quite often...

First dip today and disaster struck

Was in the water about 6am, pea soup visibility but thought i'd give some of the new gear a test

Anyway got carried out by the tide from Portinfer around to Port Soif, i was then battling against the tide to head back inshore. Found out im not as fit as i thought i was and was really not getting anywhere swimming to shore.

Things got pretty desperate, i was totally knackered and not going anwhere, in panic i ditched by weight belt, weight vest, speargun with GO PRO attached.

Managed to get to some rocks and clambered me way back to shore, was a tad surprised i was in Port Soif as i started in Portinfer.

Because of the pea soup I didn't realise how much the tide was carrying me. After this i swore i wasn't going spearfishing again, but i've got different views now as i couldn't give up what i love doing

Just need to have a bit more respect for tides, all the times ive fished there i've never been carried out like that.

Thinking i might try an insurance claim as all in all there is about £500 lost. Anyone end up in Port Soif, keep an eye open for any gear. I looked today at low tide but couldn't see anything.

Anyone else got some bad stories of Spearfishing to tell??, might make me feel like its not just me with the bad luck.

Spent the day shattered and had shivers all day, think i may have a virus which might contribute to the lack of energy in the water and general lack of fitness.:(

Glad youre ok. Tide there will take you along rather than out, but not a nice experience.

Matt, that is really bad news & bad luck but, most Guernsey watermen would of - or will, experience something similar in their lives!!
We are lucky to have the sea on our doorstep & something like you have experienced is a real eye opener!
However you can now reflect on your bad experience & learn from the bad part!
The good part is you live to tell the tail & are a wiser man already!
Please contact jonny as I am sure he will help &..... take a leaf out of his fitness book!

Thanks Foxfish for your help, I've learnt a lot from yesterday's traumas. Bit more respect for the sea and tides than I had before.

Jonny has been diving this morning and found my weight belt and vest, also stringer bag and a flipper, thanks again I owe you big time

My speargun is still lobbing around port Soif with Go Pro attached, if anyone finds it please let me know, it is however loaded (might not be now) so take care
