When the weather is like this you can very often find the bass in very shallow water, got another couple tonight...only in for 20 min too!

Mike, there is no money to be made making spearguns or at least not for me as the hours involved are huge!
I have been making them for 25 years or more & never made a single penny out of any of them LOL.
The trigger, enclosed track, handle, trigger linkage, line release & spear cost me £160 the wood was £30 (teak, mahogany & oak) & the epoxy £25 so with bands fitted about £220 + around 40 hours work = £1000, total £1.220.00
I guess I could try & sell it for around £300?
Jonny I haven't actually measured the gun but I think it is around the 100cm total length, I will put up some more detailed pics in a couple of days...

Guns looking great fox fish very slim front end reminds me of a bruno .22 rimfire rifle .should move easy in water .un like the 90 I've just used for the first few times as the vis and weather have been so good. Manouvering it was very slow and tiring but v accurate when it gets there.be there soon two weeks tomorrow we set off for the meet.yippee!

No secrete mate, you just need string weed.
The neap tides are best at low tide as the weed just stays static & the bass like to rest or hide in the weed. You need to be extremely stealthy ... Absolutely no splashing - sinking fins & lots of lead to get your body under water so your head is not at an acute angle in the shallow water.
Yesterday's bass were in less than 3' deep. It is impossible to be too stealthy! Just move a few feet a minute & do everything in slow motion, when you spot a bass don't even flinch just ease your way until your spear tip is pointing at the fish, very often my spear is only a few cm from the fish when I fire.

@ westcoaster - I'd forgotten how bloney long it takes! Though I enlisted the help of my brother, so that sped things up.

I must have seen three different groups of schoolies yesterday, like Fox says, all in 3-9ft of water. Missed one shot, and didn't even get a shot off at the other two targets; they were gone. I'll be going in again tonight to see if I can find them again and spend a bit of time learning my mark a bit better. Proper spearing suit is on the wish list. Still using a neck- entry surfing suit, which is a pulled muscle every time I get out of the thing.

here's a video from a couple of days ago:

Hi people.

Lots of bass and mullet around atm. Pic attached of a couple caught this afternoon.

I was wondering if anyone has compared the range of a 75cm gun to a 85cm like for like (I.e. same model, same band setup, etc) and what the difference is. I can't imagine you'd gain anything noticeable once in the water.

Hi Jonny, , aside from plenty of mullet and bass are you seeing any bream , flats or big pollock?

Good hunt on the East Coast, Jonny seemed to find himself on the mullet motorway and I seemed to find a massive bass out of range and a view of loads of rockies.

Was pretty quiet all in all...See if you can see the Bass in Eastcoast3 pic...where's wally

Seen a few bream, including a couple of high speed green ones [like i saw last year] i wonder if they are black bream that live in green weed?
i've heard a few reports of bream shoals but not seen them myself. i havent been hunting flatties but seen a few small ones in passing. i'm sure they are there... i havent been in the 'right' places for bigger pollack.

Hi Jonny, what species do think will be around at the two venues for the Gnsy fishin/ DB species comp?

Music for the feast? How about Bream, bream bream ....rofl

Mike, you're nuts! Next thing you'll be suggesting "hake, haddock 'n' sole" !roflroflrofl

Mike, the most common bream by far is the black but we do get many varieties some yet to be recognised!
As a general rule, the Northeast of the island is the bream hot spot although I think jonnys big gilthead came from elsewhere!!
Colin don't forget the Aussie theme on Sunday evening...
