Jonny amazing video - wetting my appetite even more for some Guernsey Spearfishing!

Nice work Jonny, very good viz for the East Coast.

And quit moaning about commercial fishermen! You must know they own the sea and everything in it! You're lucky he let you stay in his water.

So once you've pried ormers loose, are their single foot pads scrunched up? Do they react to touch? Is there anything you look for if you're going to try to eat it that would stop you? Do they hold on as tightly (before you start pulling them off) when under water as when the tide has receded?

Are there any terms you use for gathering them? For the act of pulling them free, actually going out to catch them, qualities different ormer might have, etc?

—Eric

Ummm well once removed from the rock (99% of the time they are stuck very hard) if you turn the creature upside down they curl their foot up to give a remarkable likeness to a certain part of a woman's private anatomy!!!!! I really mean this too!
We just go ormering .....

Oh. . . Uh. . . Interesting. Depending on what part that might be (rofl), I might make sure to describe it differently. Especially considering my mermaid might not have such a part. At least, not one that's shaped the same. And as a properly raised lady, she might avoid thinking of such things.

Is there a common term for the act of prying ormers from a rock?

Not that I can think of, there might well be in Guernsey French but not many folk speak it nowadays.
I might be able to find a pic of a curled ormer...

Another try at the old faithful spot, to try out my "new" Mamba ( cheers Ed!) saw a few in the weed and this one was just sitting there giving me time to take careful aim. Was glad I had my quick release catch on my wrap as I'd never have pulled the spear back out. enough for dinner for our visitors - Chinese black bean sauce perhaps:t

I have found, for a quicker way of getting a fish off the line, just push the spear right through the fish, reverse it, and push it back through the same hole. It saves having to sort the fish whilst holding a detatched spear.

Went to the weigh-in today for a Jersey competition. Loads of fish including a 10lb+ bass an a potential record bream. I was disappointed to see a significant number of small pollack and ray, some as small as 300g, which were then put for pot bait.

Yep some competitions are not based on making us look good in the public eye!
I guess in reality it is a matter of perspective but I don't see these type of comps helping the sport much?

Trelawney, just wow. thats a really useful commonsense thing to do/tip. Feeling a bit of a tit for never realizing it :)

Jonny, ive just got normal floating line that came with my bobber, not sure if its of any spec, but thus far has done the job. Up for a dive this week, free after 6 every day and from 4.30 thursday and friday.

Talking of small fish... saw a guy spearing in the corner of Grand Havre by L'Islet crossroads, and he had one ok bass and one very very small one... looked about 25cm in length.... shame.
