nice pics Matt. the gopro has a habit of making everything the same scale - small. i have switched to medium fov but might try narrow, although i think that setting is just a software crop.
it looks like we have a week of calm weather coming along! ...

On the Gopro 3+ the settings are better so you don't lose too much quality in going for a different aspect ratio, but I think it is a crop, but my gopro 2 the quality is rubbish
Cooking for my Dads birthday today, gutted I can't get in the sea

Well only 12 days till the trip to Vobster Quay with Jonny and Matt for our free diving ssi level 1 course, and I must say I am rather excited about it.

I have been thinking about a realistic goal and have a target of 18m (the boat wreck) in mind. Wether or not this is a bit ambitious of me who knows.

It will be great to learn more about the sport and put the techniques into practice with the instructors in a safer environment. I am sure I will learn a lot of new skills which will help me with my spearfishing in the future.

I think you have a good point after yesterday Mart. Had a good mind to nip out in the boat or kayak last night and drag those nets above the high water mark and cut them to pieces. I really don't know how these blokes can relax knowing they have nets set and that people are swimming in the area. Not to mention all the undersized and unusable fish that are going to get caught up.

Oooh forum controversy ! Time for me to add my 2 cents worth. The waters around the island are a common resource and I feel we should all be able to share and fish. Some people make a living from fishing or use those fish to feed themselves or their dependants directly or indirectly in some form from commercial netting or fishing in one form or another.

However I despise inshore netting, it's often done irresponsibly, at times in violation of current legislation and at some point it's got the potential to drown one of us or some poor sod/kid/tourist. The way commercial fishing in the islands has been managed to date is unfortunately piss poor, and due to the inherent vested economic interest in this resource is unlikely to be managed appropriately/sustainably in the foreseeable future.

In short given my perspective and even though I can to some extent understand the reasons for netting and bits importance to some demographics if ur into netting our inshore waters/bays........

If u were on fire I wouldn't piss on u to put u out.

Rant over. Sorry guys it's been a rough week and I despise netting.

After my luck lately I was adjusting my weight belt and ripped it again and I should have stopped there. But I thought I would persevere. Went in with no weight lol (I am fat) nearly broke my neck trying to look forwards in the bootlace because I was so buoyant. Saw a massive fat mullet on steriods that was it. Looked up to this tosser racing around in the bay with a little girl in the boat with the bow up in the air and he couldn't see anything. I waved the gun at him and he came over. I explained there was a speed limit in the bays and swimmers. To which he replied 'how fast is it'! I told him where to go and moved into yhe shallows before getting out.

nets and boats - a fact of life. i really don't want to end up being hated by all other water users so lets just be nice eh ;)
what i would suggest is that you write a note to the fisheries team [chris morris] they are actually trying to do a good job imo, so let them know your views on nets as part of the ongoing consultation :)

Soooo, I went in at Fontenelle for a long swim with the tide.
Found bass but not much else.
enjoyed some really relaxed drops over the sand hoofing along in the tide past Doyle.
shocking cloudy vis and it was quite dark further down.

Nice chunky fish mate, viz really was pants given the weather lately.

I know the guys in the sea fisheries team, all nice but they are up against it. Nice fish jonny

So, with the inshore netting and trot lining season about to start, and following the recent conversations - i thought it might be worth just clarifying what the rules say:
They cover the allowable location of nets, but also the public safety:
"a person shall not use, place or set within the restricted waters or on the foreshore, -
any fishing line, trot line or set net, which in the opinion of an officer of police or a person authorised in writing by the committee - may endanger public safety in territorial waters, or on the foreshore of the islands, or is not adequately marked with registration number..."

so a set net is not necessarily legal just because it meets the halfway tide location. if it can be shown that it has unreasonably put you at risk, take some photos. if there are no owner i.d. marks [gear serial number] then it is not legal either.

What a night I had last night... Matt Gurney stabbed Sarah mutable times with a spear because I stole his neoprene boots!!
At least that was what she was telling me at 2am this morning!!
She was still going on about it breakfast & it still going on about it now!

Bad dream mate...... she did meet him (westcoaster) during the fish in but that was weeks ago... strange ah !

Blimey not sure what to say, I'm not really attached to my neoprene boots, but if you really want them you can have them, they aren't smelling the best right now.....a little fragrant you could say...
If you do want them I definitely won't want them back :)
Hopefully any dreams Sarah has tonight won't involve spears or me
