Wow that's bizarre mart, horrendous but in a way interesting. Went down leree checking holes for lobs, got one but not a lot but congers around today, me and lil sarge did 3 1/2 hours and no silver seen, viz was surprisingly good

I was told a horrendous sorry this morning!
Well horrendous to my ears anyway!
Apparently there is a French long liner who works mid channel, he sets thousands of hooks baited with cuttle.
The boat has automated mortised equipment that baits the hooks etc but the really horrific part is any whole conger that are caught has the last quarter of its body cut off & is thrown back into the sea alive!
They have discovered that the congers can actually survive & although they can not generate a new tail they grow into fat stumpy congers that in turn can be caught again!

Any ideas why they take the last quarter? Food/bait?

It is the prime cut from a conger & is sold in France as a food.

Went cricking on foot with me lobster hound in the sunshine, got 2 then went for a dive out west . Saw nothing for the first hour then lots of schoolies in the egg wrack at about half tide , found a clinker of a mullet that got so close that it actually swam into my spear tip, I let it be though. On the way back took a decent schoolie then just before I got out in 2ft of water over pebbles saw a good fish move to my left and swim past my fins, so took a gamble put my gun between my legs and had a crack at it, bass for tea

Anyone got any advice for bass wounds . Got spiked in the thumb and now it's pretty sore.

Well done mate, I like bass around the 2.5 - 3lb for eating best of all.
With my big knife I can boneless fillet them like a mackerel & the fillets are just right for a generous portion.

I don't think you will get infected mate but they can be very painful for 8 hours or so!
My brother never used cloves because he felt he needed the grip of bare hands to handle the fish without fear of it escaping but I use gloves to give me the confidence!

Hi foxfish, further to your conger story i have seen caught on rod and line a conger that was missing a good section of its rear end. Had it been whole its weight would of exceeded the qualifying weight needed and thus would probably have ended its life. But it was returned alive leaving us to invent possible reasons for its missing portion.
We never came close to the actual reason tho...........

Yes, the beach is Petit Port, looking West.

Went in today after a 3.5hr blank dive with fro-in-shorts on sat! Viz was patchy and there was a swell coming in. 2 bass seen and god knows how many mullet, they were everywhere. Finally got to try out my mid handle riffe and I am very impressed. Took a bass of 4lbs 12oz (65cm) and a decent mullet. All in all a nice night.

Nice one mate, mullet love hot calm days, they really like to come close to shore over hot sand on the incoming tide when we get days like tomorrows forecast!
I am in the boat tomo over the low, going to dive some north coast reefs.

Are you using tanks or are you taking advantage of these big tides fox fish?

No I am not a scuba fan, anyway the vis was as bad as it can get on the offshore reefs so we ended up rod fishing!
Nothing exciting caught but plenty of black bream...

I'll give you a 10'er Grant if you can get from the beach to the top of the steps there holding your breath! I'll give £50 to anyone who gets him on film trying !

oh and Grant......if you are down there I was working up on that cliff at the side of the steps checking for loose rocks.........I think I found them all!

Lovely walk and swim on the low this morning. Only 2 silver seen but plenty of mullet and large rockies around. I was sneaking up on the mullet in the string weed and touching them with the spear tip. Strange I haven't seen many Skool bass this year at all! Took a bass of 4lb 1oz (59cm)

Couple of hours spearfishing Saturday and a couple of hours this morning, and I can honestly say I wouldn't be able to hit an elephant under water right now. There weren't any bass around but loads of mullet, a massive one right under me and was already deciding how I was going to cook him when the spear somehow missed, only for a shoal of about 10 smaller ones to fly past my head while re-loading. Saw the biggest rocky I've ever seen, its eyes were so big I was freaked by what I saw from the corner of my eye at first, I reckon it was around the 8-9lb mark. Seems to be loads of rockies around
Lent my boss my GoPro 2 for his holiday, so called a favour with a mate and using his Hero 3+, found big difference with low light setting on, also could see the fish on camera quite clearly when in the distance, won't want to give it up now. Going to try a few new locations soon.
