Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Probably a bit late but anyone fancy joining me saints bay early tomorrow morning, lots of mullet and bass about.

Hope you all enjoy the celebrations on this our special day ..... have a great liberation day .....(y)

There was a gap of a few years when I had to work on other things, including one that made it out (Non-fiction, niche). As for no pelicans, I'm glad. I recently saw artifacts form a Native American seaside group that used pelican throats as pouches. Thought I'd use them in the story. And that means for such a pouch to get to Tane, it indicates trade networks.

Also: Happy Liberation Day!

Went in today just after the low water walking from my backyard beach across to the jetty, had a couple of hours in and then swam back to the little beach by my house.
Cracking day, sunlight, mullet & bass around, nice weed and underwater scenery.
Just yards from shore thinking about a nice cuppa when a bass was tail up head down eating something in about a meter of water. Still managed to miss the berger!
Early season (for me) excitement saw the spear travel a good few inches over the back. Doh!
Still, good to dust off the kit.

By the way, has anyone had a definitive answer on the bass question?
Are there actual laws in act that we need to adhere to or not?

Just checked the printed tide guide and there are sections on 'summary of fishing laws' / 'seasons' etc but no mention of bass restrictions (other than the standard 42cm restriction).

Ed that is a good question, I have read so many different answers to that question, however to the best of my knowledge... there are no restrictions for shore fishermen apart from the 42cm limit.
Unfortunately there still seems to be conflicting advice regarding spearfishing,.
I have read some people claiming to have contacted GSF and being informed with completely different advice than other people have received!
I have received messages claiming that there is a bass ban or a three limit bass restriction & other messages saying the complete opposite!!
I have personally posted on GSF Facebook page asking for advice but not received any reply!

Any of you had any bad experiences from Scubaland in France ? Been waiting on a big order for a few weeks now ? Was shipped on the 15th and ordered on the 7th still no sign of it ?

Haven't tried them but I think Magpie has in the past?
I normally use subprof in Spain - quite good prices but noticed a little price jump in the cart on checkout last time (might just have been the currency conversion).
Elios... Now there's a company with elastic delivery times :)

Italian invasion this weekend... Went down for a look with Fabio this morning but both decided that there aren't that many spring high tide spots that we know of!
Heard all about his experiences at the world championships in Greece over an espresso instead.
Try again on the more predicable low tide spots this afternoon.

Yeh, used Scubaland a lot in the past without any problems, but not for many years. Even been to the store in Brest, well worth a visit. Maybe delayed in customs?

Let us know how you, and more relevantly perhaps, Fabio, got on Ed.

Good dive out west. Started off a little bit overcast but the sun peeked out by the end of the dive. Great conditions, very low, calm with the hint of swell around the rocks. Not very deep which my lungs/fitness thanked me for.
First aspetto - saw a small shoal of mullet all at about 2 pounds or so. I thought that there might be a bass lurking in there but no. Carried on with little aspettos and a quick chat every 15 mins or so (good to dive with those who keep aware of where you are). Fabio had seen the same - just mullet.
I was mooching in a shallow gulley waiting for Fabio to finish an aspetto when I saw a nice silver shoal heading my way. Saw mullet and bass mixed in together - all quite small like before but nice to see that angular gill plate again. Young pale bass.
Swam over to another spot and Fabio carried on with the shallow aspettos and I tried stalking in the shallows. This isn't something I am historically good at - I think that just at the point where my mind wanders to daydreaming, that's when I see that there's a bass just over my left shoulder.
Same thing today - saw three medium bass in less than a metre of water (all ten minutes apart), all going slow and took two shots.
Felt sure that I'd get that familiar tightening of the line but no, just a steel shaft rattling along the rocks.
Might take a barn door down next time.
Fabio had a good dive, saw small bass, didn't take any - good dive though.

Been out a few times this year but mainly to collect spiders, well the big ones I could find and it was a lot harder work than other years. Went out Thursday evening last week, saw a clonker of a mullet in the shallows, unfortunately it was at a point that I was making a bit of noise and the mullet waved me goodbye with his tail....after that saw very little else.
Saturday morning and got in the water again at another spot, the bootlace was thick and within a few minutes I had a bass on the stringer, then took a mullet, saw lots of bass and a few mullet, a massive mullet passed me and I was starting to line up on it, disappeared for a few seconds as it swam past the bootlace, lined up thinking I knew where it would come out, only for it to swim into my head and then shot as fast as it could in the opposite direction, maybe a 5lb + fish. Managing about 1.5hours in the water before getting pretty cold, The bass I caught was 3.5lb and the Mullet around 3lb....pressure off something on the scoreboard.... :)
