Guernsey 2017

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I am not sure how easy it is to claim a British record or if the record list is kept up to date like it used to be?
http://www.underwaterfishing.co.uk/national-fish-records/
Guernsey used to hold loads of records, I had the Sole record for a short while, there was even a mini fish record list at one time.
Derek broke the sand smelt ( 'roselet') record twice with one shot but the mini list was removed a long time ago.

Cracking dive today with Kerin & Brandon & Jonny making a guest appearance.
Best part for me was hanging on to kelp in a metre of raging water and then dropping down into 8m of mixed kelp.
You could get right out of the current overhead with this nice drop off.
On the first dive I had my chin tucked in facing my chest so when I hit the bottom and looked up I was surprised to be shoaled by a shed load of pollock.
Biggest shoal I've seen! Absolutely amazing sight.
Thick with pollock, some of them banging into me and the gun.
Saw a white bream/black bream in the mix too but possibly too small.
Did that a few times.
Deep aspetto on the way through a channel and saw a small/mid bass cruise past but didn't shoot.
Good dive, thanks guys.

Beautiful out today and landed my first ever fish!

I see a few of those records come from Gsy and Jsy Mart.

Well done on your first fish Ben (y)

As Ed said a few of us got out for a dive this afternoon. Didn't see as much as what I thought I would. Was up tiding in some seriously powerful tide and moving in behind heads for shelter when I found a couple of white bream doing the same thing, took one of them which I was happy about. Glad we are getting some nicer weather again, cheers for the dive guys.

Better late than never..... am off on hold in Brittany and regretting not bringing my dive gear, viz down the nearest beach is gin clear.

Great dive / raid on the boat with the boys last week. Lots of scoolie bass and and an amazing dive in some low tide lagoons ( huge tides last week) spent a lot of time playing cat and mouse with some gilt heads in 4ftbof water in the jap weed. No joy though as for some reason they didn't want to come say hi........
then changed tactics, went a bit deeper and was rewarded with a broadside shot on a guilty that was head down and feeding . Good shot, but it went loopy and chinned me when I attempted to bear hug it. Did another hour with some big bass seen hitting sprats and crunching crabs. Then had a cheeky bonus guilty on the way in just to wind the shell up

Are those white bait in the picture you posted John ? ;)

I have copied this post from Deputy Neil Inder.....

All, this is the response I got from the Home Department reference the regulation of spearguns. It looks like they need classification as 'weapons' before they can be regulated. Such is the way of the law. And from what I can see it's not too onerous in as much that spear fisherman won't need a police check and a licence - which would be the worst case scenario.

"The aim of adding spear guns and crossbows to this legislation is to restrict the sale and use of them to/by unsupervised children. This is in line with a decision made by the States of Deliberation some years ago, for the improvement of safety. There is no desire or intention to introduce any form of licencing or general regulation for spear guns or crossbows.

The Ordinance seeks to restrict the possession / purchase of these weapons by under 18’s. For spear guns, a draft regulation will give an exemption to 12 to 17 year olds when supervised by an adult. In line with current practice, unless there are serious aggravating factors, unsupervised children found in possession of a regulated weapon contrary to this law would be referred to the Childrens Convenor, rather than face prosecution."

Fair enough, although being 17 in a month I find it a problem, as surely this means for me no spearo unless supervized ?

Nothing has been pasted Kristian, so you are ok at the moment & it might take some time for anything to change.

I was curious to try a pre-dawn dive.

I did this with Tom years ago on one of the lowest tides of the year on 'the west coast'. So I thought I'd refresh my memory.

In at 4am, out at 7am. Still recovering! Might be a once a year thing for me.

Had an OMD plaice, small sole & two small lobsters.

Quite a few lobsters walking around on the sand this year. Didn't have a net bag (never take one) so ditched the lobbies in a safe place and carried on looking.

Monster red mullet out swam me :( Pissed off about that as I think they taste amazing (not everyone's cup of tea hey Mart...)

Couple of cuttle seen and left to oscillate on the sea bed - amazing beasties.

Saw a little orange bream about hand sized / was thinking Couches but it looked more orange than pinky red.
What else did I see? Metre long silver eel, loads of min bass, big mullet, hand soles, tiny red mullet.
Good dive, nice sunrise.

It might of been a small red bream

Taste like three day old pot bait, unless the pot bait was red mullet (best thing to do with them by the way) in the first place... in which case they would possibly taste better after three days dead & rotting underwater than a fresh one.

Bought a cheaper version of a gopro to try out.
Its a EVODX 4K ULTRA HD the video was filmed in 1080p @ 30fps and the battery life is about 1.5 hrs on this setting. Camera was about £50 from 7dayshop.com http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EvoDX-4K-...ing-2-Batteries-and-Accessories-/391827590643. Somehow managed to delete most of my footage (not the best at all this tech stuff)
Heres a very short clip of some of the footage I managed to save. I know a couple of the guys are interested to see what the video quality is like. Thanks to Matt (westcoaster) for the help and info.

Meant to ask anyone know of any spots that are certain to be pollock around, as back in October and water should be a little cooler ?

Pollock like swimming around drop off reefs, they lay in wait in the lee of the tide for passing food (sandeels).
They much prefer deep water & off shore reefs but anywhere that has deep water straight off the shore has potential.
Chouet Headland, Fort Doyle Fort Le Marchant all have deep water close to shore but also have strong tides so be very carful!

Yeah, the only place ive ever seen them was on the far side of saints bay in about 7-8m of water. But have had them off the bathing pools at a high tide only over different times 4 times so tempting to try there. But thanks for the info Martyn
