Holiday Guernsey 2007

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
We wondered what you were doing too!

Not sure if I'm going in today, but happy to guide people around again if needed.

Yesterday Holiday Guernsey 2007 reached its climax with the whole contingent, accompanied by OMD and self, going in around the islands off Bordeaux. Vis not so good today, although better further out in the tide, where the more adventurous went. I saw a few bass in the shallows, but no time even to get off a shot. The others saw bass and mullet, final catch being Scottie one bass, OMD a small lobster. The jinx of no fish at all over the weekend continued for Yours truly.:head

On to Foxy's late afternoon for the final attack on livers, cholesterol levels, and in one case, blood sugar!:t I'll only post a few pics as some of the others may have better ones. Smoked bass, mullet and wrasse with chili dip as a appetiser, followed by smoked mackerel done on the barbie with Guernsey cherry tomatoes, then Foxy's signature lobster thermidor, crack it - yourself lobster claws and deep sea chancre crab and finally, local melon with roquefort cheese and salad. ( I'm sure Foxfish will correct me if I've got any of that wrong!) All absolutely delicious and even for us locals, a rare treat. The visitors would not have been able to get anything like it even at the best local restaurants. Needless to say, one or two glasses of wine and Rocquette ciders and beers went down too!

And then - the DeeperBlue Holiday Guernsey 2007 Prizegiving!

The new Perpetual DeeperBlue Trophy for the best catch by a visiting Spearo went to - James T. I haven't got a very good photo of it, but I'll let Foxfish elaborate on this coveted prize, which we hope will be eagerly contested in future years.

Runners up who received Guernsey mugs with a fish theme, designed by local artist Val Chandler, were: 2nd - Scottie3030, 3rd - Spaniard. I'll post a better picture of them later.

The evening was rounded up with toasted marshmallows around the fire in what has now become known as the club hut. Fond farewells were said to our new chums around midnight. Thank you for the pressies - you really didn't need to - and thank you Podge for your generosity, but you're a very naughty boy:rcard

Most people leave by midday today, although they're still going to squeeze a last dive in opposite their hotel - presumably driving to the ferry still wet and kitted up! James T will be the last and will have time for a last dive this afternoon. A truly epic long weekend!:friday

Sorry Island Sands - yes it is Scottie3030, afraid he's taken, and she's not bad either! I think once the others get back and post, they'll confirm a good time was had. It was great to meet some non-Guerns from DeeperBlue, and I think we've made some good friends.

Deep Thinker, you'd be welcome, and would have to go some to match this lot! The visitors won't be posting till they get back later today, and we locals haven't had a lot of time to either! Hopefully some more pics will be posted soon.

She is isnt she? A very handsome couple.

Perhaps we should organise a UAE 2008 - what do you think? We have some nice locations... check these out

Deepwater :inlove and myself would love to organise something.

Spaniard will be first home so maybe soon? James is still in the water & the OTHERS are on the boat heading home.
All the guys were very nice people, Stuck in Surrey is the most smiley good natured person you could ever meet. Spaniard is so relaxed (cool dude) Podge is the most generous person you could ever meet, James is a top rate hunter & appreciative person, Scottie is the good looking one & his partner ain't to bad either. Marco is the supremo diver & the most laid back & his girl friend Lora is just so sweet
I just hope we can do it again next year?

Sands that would be nice but I think I can see a shark fin in one of those pics.

Sounds like you all had a grand time and I must admit looking at these photos, we spear fishermen all have VERY good looking partners.. must be all the fish we feed them!!!

Have just got back home, sods law as I leave Guernsey the best weather and conditions arrive!! Oh well. I will try and summarise my thoughts on the trip. Basically I cannot overstate the overwhelming hospitality that all of us UK spearos received whilst in Guernsey. From the moment we arrived we were ferried about, fed and watered, taken to the best dive spots, taken out at night for "a couple of ciders" and much more. Foxfish (Mart) has been an absolute star alongside Foxy Lady (Sarah), kindred spirits and friends for life. What Foxy doesn't know about local fish and seafood and their preparation ain't worth knowing. I also received a masterclass in filleting along with James T. OMD (Dave) was a star, acting as troupe leader when we arrived at dive spots, looking after and washing gear, entertaining us with many tales from his diving'n'spearing years; what OMD doesn't know about life under Guernseys waves ain't worth knowing. Thank you too to OMD long suffering wife, Helen for her generosity and friendliness. Sarnian (Colin) and Mrs Sarnian, Mandy made every effort to make us fel at home and cooked some superb food on Fri night, thanks for all the photos you took, my birthday cake and for the lift to the airport Mandy! To Derek, the eldest and wisest of the Foxens, I hope i'm in such good shape when I reach your innings!!! I look forward to some pictorial wit from you very soon. Thank too to the other Guernsey folk who came to see us, Portinfer (Ed), Beardy and George. We also had a chance to meet Marco (top spearo) and Laura, Ciao to both of you, safe journey back!!

To all the UK spearos I met for the first time, James T, Podge, Stuckinsurrey, Scottie3030 (and his girlfriend Louise), it was a pleasure, at last!! Podge very generously paid for our 'curry' night and has a hearty appetite for just about anything! JamesT, top spearo and deserved winner of trophy (see you in Beer soon). Stuckinsurrey had a go with gun and rod, brave lad, and had the strangest long'lasting smile last night. Well done to Scottie3030 and Louise for joining in, nice GG mullet mate!

I'd like to say what a crap time i've had if only to dissuade anyone else from going next year but nothing could be further from the truth; I have every intention of returning ASAP, if they'll have me.

Top holiday, top people - I can't say anymore than this. Thank you all once again and stop giving me cider!!!

Spaniard (Juan)
