Tom, how the hell do you cook one that big? I heard about someone who caught an 8lb-er and took it to a restaurant who didn't have a pot big enough! I suppose you'd have to find someone with an old "copper" like they used to use in the market. Nice problem to have though!:)

My BBQ would of been big enough, or you simply dissect the creature & cook the bits.
Anyhow where have you been lately Col?

Maximum size for local lobsters is around 12lb. One of my commercial diving mates had a 12 lb-er while he was using scuba. Many potters have had them into double figures. A theoretical maximum weight nearer 20lb is possible but they are slow growing and with the amount of fishing big lobbies are not going to be a common catch. The old local spearo recored was around 10lb about the same as crab. I won the lobster cup (Terry Bideau trophy) 3 years running way back when with lobsters between 6 and 8 lb.

The "Maine" lobsters from NE USA are a different species and are faster growing. They reach 40lbs. Biggest lobsters in the world.

I don't go fror lobsters much as am not really a fan of eating crab/lobster but have had a some to 4lb in the last few years. Despite all the pots there still seems to be a few around. Can usually find one or two plus a few congers if I look hard. Any time anyone wants to go look in the summer I'm always up for something different.

Dave

I've spent quite a bit of time in the New England states as my daughter lives there.Visited a Maine lobster 'factory' where each one was about one lb.However in the supermarkets you can see some whoppers for sale...20 lb. plus.
Lobster rolls ( usually with fries ) can be bought fairly cheaply...even in McDonalds! I think the American variety has a milder flavour. We've bought
a couple of frozen cooked Maine lobsters from a local store in recent months...I think the price was £7 ( about 1 lb. size ) We noticed that we could cut the shell with kitchen shears...more like plastic than the more brittle European type.

I was having a chat with my commercial fisherman friend last week, I explained that we would be needing about 15 lobsters in August for our party. Anyhow due to a "LITTLE" confusion I now have 16 lobsters being delivered tomorrow morning!

Ha ha, nice one Derek, its Podges birthday too! What a present that would be.

Surely you can rig up a tank to keep them going till August Mart? Feed them up into buster size!

(If you need to get rid of some we'll take one or two for a reasonable contribution :))

... or you could always have a rehearsal for August!:) Or you could stick em in a storepot until then!

We'd also be happy to buy one off you.

Sorry guys but I dont have a problem disposing with 16 lobsters & a bonus 4lb crab...
