Hyperfin from Triton equipment

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
fondueset are you using a normal J snorkel when you are surface swimming or one of those fandangeled front mount snorkels? just looking at using my mono as my primary recreational fin. still use my carbons for spearing but i would really like to learn a good surface mono technique so i can travel longer distances.

also on a side note i have family in Michigan and looks like i may be heading over next year for a while i think he lives in Alpina??? all i know is hes up on the great lakes somewhere, is the diving pretty good (ie is it worth bringing my gear?)

thanks

DD

Alpena is over on Lake Huron and the answer is YES! Also, if you get the chance - drive on over to Traverse City and we'll have a dive. Looking forward to a review of Max's fin from some experience monomaniacs.
I just use a Riffe Stable snork with the mono - I don't like it as well as my impulse II but it is very hydrodynamic. The secret to surface swimming seems to be - keep arms and head steady (no up and down) legs mostly straight and lift your butt out of the water. Play with that till it feels right. That advice, gotten from Laminar, has been of huge help to me both on the surface and below. I use my mono for underwater photography.

Thats good to hear, i may just take you up on that offer, will have to invest in a 5mm wetsuit before then! i tend to just use OMER Zoom pro snorkels (not a big fan off purges) but that makes no difference, glad to hear a normal snorkel is useful.

will have to try that technique for surface swimming makes sense though, should reduce the amount of wasted energy slapping water on he surface.

would love to e able to use he mono for pearing but not sure it would work to well but they are just som much more fun to use, really makes me feel part of the water and FREE.

anyway enough preaching.

It works fine as long as you're not hoping to move around too much once you're on the bottom. Great if your style is just to drop to the bottom and wait to see what comes past. Just make sure you don't let fish wrap line around your legs...

Hi all!

I've been reading the threads and looking around because i'm thinking of buying my first monofin (if there is a pool that will let me use one in the city i'm moving to).

But i'm not going to lie, i'm totally lost. I want a fin for recreational dynamics, no competitions and i'm not totally fussed about going as fast as I can. At the same time I obviously want one that is efficiant, easy to manouveur and comfortbale. Something that feels good in the water and will allow me to go as far as I can. Oh and i'm a student so one that isn't going to cost me three months rent :D

I don't think I need a hyperfin, but what about the other fins from Triton? Or should I go for a waterway nemo? In any case I need to go for a soft blade am I right? And what is more comfortable, a closed or open heel?

Thank you so much in advance!

You can email max at Triton and see what he says. But for a first fin I think the waterway nemo is a good investment. They are extremely well built and comfortable (once you get used to them!! - be advised it can take awhile) and inexpensive. Though you've probably got more reasonable shipping from Triton over there. Of the entry level fins I've see the Nemo is definitely the most solidly built.

None of us have any experience with Max's other fins. All of us only have his Hyperfins, one style or the other. So we cannot provide you with any information on the other fins he makes.

Anyway, you wouldn't want one of his Hyperfins, considering your needs and demands. It's reasonably priced for a Hyperfin, but Hyperfins are generally expensive, so you as a student will not want/be able to afford it.

The Waterway Nemo is a nice fin. Otherwise, the Specialfins Dolphin FRD is very similar. I have used the Specialfins 'Peter', which is almost identical to the Dolphin FRD, and it's really comfortable and nice to use.

Leaderfins and Specialfins both make good entry level fins - but I think the Waterway is the best built. Mine have held up to heavy use extremely well.

Cheers! I think the comfort factor is one of the most important for me, I tried Dave King's mono a while back and after just a few lengths my feet really hurt.

I think i'll email Max and see what he thinks because he does have some very inexpensive fins, though i'm sure that means they are also so less... sophisticated :)

Thank you again!

alix,

Keep in mind it does take awhile for the feet to adjust. My hyperfin made me nearly insane with pain for the first 10 dives or so, now I can go 3 hours.
My waterway nemo was the same - horrible pain - but now 6 hours or more.
But for comfort it is best to go with bifin style footpockets and a soft blade for sure.

I will do. I reckon every fin is uncomfortable at first; if I don't get to use my bifins all winter then come spring i'm having to train my feet up as well as the rest of my body.

Thanks again!

Good to see you here Max. Have a great Holiday! Don't work too hard :) We can wait.

Also - I don't know if I mentioned - new personal best for wearing my Triton fin - 6 hours!!

Alix - The Triton fins are not less sophisticated.
Max is a former European Monofin champion - he knows his stuff! If you are in the states or Canada contact Pete (Laminar on DB) about the Triton fins. If you are in Europe the shipping may be less - making them more competitive with the Waterway.

You can discuss your needs with Max. He may come up with something perfect for you.

I can also vouch for the Waterway Nemo - which comes at an amazing price and is an extremely well-made fin. Now that I've found the Triton comfortable for winter use I'm passing on my nemo as an xmas gift to my dive buddy. Excellent recreational fin - and very sturdy and comfortable. I agree with Apnea Queen's recommendation for this as a first fin - though you may want to check and see what Max has to offer in the same range.

Yes, in my experience the first few weeks with a monofin are really miserable!

Well I recieved my hyperfin from Triton/Max and must say that I have been disappointed.
i paid Max in Dec '08 and was told I would have it shipped by Jan 10th '09 and recieved by mid Jan. Well it arrived Feb 17th '09 one day before I left to train in Kona Hawaii.
I requested A black blade, black footpockets built to accomodate 3mm socks, and wings in black of neutral bouyancy. When I unpacked it the smell of paint hit my nostrils and my eyes confirmed my thoughts, I got a black blade courtesy of a can of spray paint! My footpockets are made in blue not black rubber and my fin is not neutral but positive.
Also there is no reinforement between the footpockets like on the waterway so at some point that weak point will give and the fin will split.Waterway's uses a shank between the blade to solve that problem.and lastly i'm lucky i can get the fin on without a sock so the thought of wearing a 3mm sock for California dives is out of the question.I have sent Max numerous e-mails with these concerns but to this point Nothing.I look forward to my next
Hyperfin being a Waterways Glide you get what you pay for. Happy diving DD
