what do yous think about camoflag wetsuits. i was thinking to buy one but cant decide on color and made. i was looking in to Omer mimetic brown or ocean or green color. 5mm or 6.5mm. maybe somebody knows better solution? any body knows about sporasub production??? its worthed to look in to it, price is good, but whats about quality.

Thanks Sunfish, much appreciated.

Danas, camo wetsuit total wate of time IMO....friend of mine has one...always make him walk at least 500yards in front of me in case people think I know him.
A case of all the gear no idea....(right Ben ?):t

I Like camo wetsuits but I don't think they help to get fish. A black one is probably as good as any. I just like the look of camo. If you keep still the colour of your suit probably doesn't matter.

This old chestnut "a" - well I also like camo but am not sure if it works?

I'm not one for "fashion" but my one concession is a cammo suit. Not sure why as every other bit of gear I own is function first. As to do they work I have to say that when I dived with our Italian visitors over here their aspettos hidden in the weed saw them disappear to a remarkable degree in their cammo suits. Black would have stood out more but that was to my eyes so maybe a fishes eyes would see a diferent view.

For my sort of fishing black or cammo is probably not so good. The fish are almost always below me and as such to them I am silouetted against the surface then grey or silver would probably be a better cammo. Shades of blue are available for "ocean" hunters but I have the standard brown/green.

Maybe with all the videos about someone will do some experimenting and show us all the results.

Dave

PS I once dived in a competition with the Belgium national team who had all sprayed their wesuits silver for cammo but that was a very long time ago.

The thing with all cammo suits is we judge it by the human eye and we think, 'hey I can't see my mate in his black/silver/green/brown suit' and therefore we think we are invisible. But what the hell do the fish see? Do they see the same as us? Are they like the predator and use infra-red? Has some clever marine biologist cracked this yet? Shall I just carry on drinking cider?

Maybe there is a clue within the fishes themselves, lets face it there are plenty of examples.

I believe that fish can feel every vibration from your body, through their lateral line so they get your heartbeat and know you are there somewhere. If you keep your mood relaxed and don't move too fast or too much they don't worry about it too much.

Thats certainly true. On days when visibility is high enough to see the bottom clearly, I often can't tell if pollack are there until I dive down to them.
Flatfish rely on camouflage too.

I went this morning for a quick shore dive, form a beach near here. I got to try out a "Nemrod Clipper", a Spanish gun, belonging to a friend. The sea was calm enough, though the weather was very changeable, sunny one minute and icy rain next. Unfortunately the visibility is still very bad here and I couldn't always see the end of the gun. It's 60cms long so that's poor vis.
I didn't even see any small ones, even from underwater looking up.
Temperature had dropped to 50 from 54 on my last dive. I'm thinking most of the the bass may have gone off to deeper water for now.

Had a look down your way yesterday Sunfish noooo vis. looking calm for the weekend. temperture dropped to 10 degrees on the computer, 13 the week before????

Went to Roberts Cove yesterday evening for my first night dive. It was very enjoyable. Good vis calm conditions. I saw many plaice, all very small. Maybe the bigger ones are a bit deeper.

It looks like they're commoner in the Cork harbour area. Johnny's plaice in the early FOM came from that area and Donnochad was in that area.
Do you find them to be localised in Guernsey or are they everywhere?
I've asked around the local anglers and plaice catches are rare this far West, most of the flatfish catches being flounder or sometimes dab.

i got my Omer XXV 90 - so delighted , so much difference to pneumatic gun. much more power and much better shooting range.
we went yesterday to Hook Head - was ok but not great. vis was only about 3-5m , but very little of fish, even small ones was gone. i shoot couple wrase fish, have to try my new gun, was so delighted.
i think that was almost last dive before wheater gets warmer, becouse is no fish. maybe i`m wrong , maybe is possible to find somewhere some fish . where is best places to look for fish when is cold or winter ? and what type of fish i must look for ?

Dont know about Ireland but the south west of England still has plenty fish. I will admit that a lot of my summer spots are starting to go quiet. Whats the flat fish situation like over there? do you get many?

got out again lastnight in the same spot, plaice all over the place, but all very small. I'd need a buddy to go out further. Very enjoyable being in the water on such a clear night. I'll try to get out on wednesday before the weather turns

Sunday I went out with the kayak. I saw nothing much of note and I was soon cold. The water was now 48f and I spent a lot of time frantically paddling between spots trying to get warm again.
Yesterday I put on the 7ml wetsuit. Much better! I swam for 2 hours at a favourite spot of mine, catching bass of 4.9 and 6.7lbs and a mullet of 4.3lbs. I was wrong about the bass disappearing. Now that the vis has cleared there are still a good few around. As soon as I had the second one (bag limit), I saw a few bigger ones. 2008_11030021.JPG.

I just got back from a night dive with my new "Shockwave LED".(Thanks to OMD for advice on this).
The first place I got in was a beach in Courtmacsherry bay. There was no vis and the torch just lit up the murk so I drove across the heads to a West facing, rocky shore, where I found 15ft+. The torch beam was great. Not much difference between low and high power and I found the switch a bit awkward to use with one hand, but otherwise it's a good light.
I saw a couple of small pollack and a couple of mullet. I'd delibarately left the gun in the car on my second dive so I shot nothing.
Good luck with the plaice tomorrow Donnachad. Hope you spot some big ones.
Good luck with the XXV 90 Danas. There should be pollack around for a month or so yet. I'm no expert at catching flatfish but they're there all through winter.

Sunfish, I said next time I was down your way I'd give you a shout. I was in Cork with the family last week. I brought all my gear hoping I could sneak off for a half day but no such luck. Next time.

I had an afternoon in Galway Bay on Sunday, vis was about 3m, water was cold, all the usual fish were gone. I saw 1 solitary wrasse. Do pollock move to deeper water when its cold or is it the recent stroms that push them out?
