hey. got out yesterday evening at a spot on the south side of galway bay.
spent 45 mins in the water, diving around 8 metres. very little life around. saw no fish, but did spot a few crabs which seemed to be in serious hiding.
viz was good at around 5metres.
have to do some work on y breathold times, so i'm off to the freediving section.
did anyone else get a chance to get out? or did the easter eggs win out?

still too murky round my neck of the woods and the low is approaching!!
few questions.......im travelling through france and spain in a camper this summer. how do i bring my speargun on a plane?was gonna drive my jeep over but think ill fly and rent a camper now. anybody done this before?
and is it legal to pick scallops on scuba. programme on tv last night shocked me as they were doing it.

Hey johny, had no problems bringing the gun by plane , it was 3 years ago though.
I just put it in the speargun bag and put it through with the luggage. They didnt even look at it.
Does anyone know where i can get shocks and gloves?? looking for 3-5mm gloves and shocks but from neoprene inside and nylon outside.

Johnny dont know much about europe but collecting scallops in Ireland on scuba is a big no no they will take your gear on the spot if you are caught with them. I would give the airlines a shout to see what restrictions are on spearguns in luggage as they probably vary from airline to airline.
Hmmm, time to ditch the scuba suit i've been making do with. so many suits to choose from. I'm looking at an omer team titanium 5 mm or cressi competition 5mm, both resonably priced with lining inside and out. anybody got any thoughts on whats suitable for our cold waters.

I moved to Ireland 8Dublin) last October and am dying to have some buddies to go spearfishing with, or even rod (spinning plugs for bass) or clam fishing. incidently, there is a very usefull tool to pull out the razorclams.
I fear for the integrity of my six spearguns just sitting all alone in their bag...

donnachad, go with an open cell interior. got an elios 5mm one last summer, and its very very warm. better than the 7mm lined suit i had previously.
did a bit of raiding the forums before buying, and i think that was the jist of it. go open cell!
i find it incredibly warm, was diving in nov, dec, and end of february, and was toasty warm. however i found it a bit warm once or twice in the summer.
would even consider, (if i had the cash) getting a 3mm suit open cell interior for the summer.

Same here donnachad, have a 7mm open cell interior, it is super for the winter or autumn

the company is greek and is called "pesca". i am very satisfied, if i remember well i got the 7mm 3 years ago for 200€-230€, taylor made,all i had to do is to meassure my self.

I live in San Diego, CA at the moment, originally from Zimbabwe, but the family lives in Carlow right now. I might be moving back in August or so, so was doing some research on spearing in Ireland and came across this thread.
I just wanted to introduce myself as I might get to have a dive or two with some of you when I get back.
Also, donnachad, I agree with the other guys about the open cell. It is way warmer than a neoprene in suit. The water in San Diego is really cold and I have a 5mm open cell, and I can stay in the water for 5-6 hours in Dec (11-12 degree) As for where to get it, check this guy Spiros Diveskin - Neoprene Creations in Greece out. He makes custom suits for $200 delivered(3mm&5mm), which is dirt cheap for a suit, change that into Euro and it's a steal.
Plus his suits are really well made, last for ever and the custom fit keeps you warmer for longer plus his customer service is excellant. The only thing that sucks is trying to pee in that suit coz it just stays in there and you stew in your own piss. HAHA

zimgonzo, i'll be away for the entire summer myself, but there is a good spread of people on the board here from around the country.

but a short journey to the west coast, will bring you into much better conditions.

hi guys. thanks for the advice, 5mm open cell sounds good. toasty warm i like the sound of that. I went to nohoval cove with a few mates this afternoon, the sea was fairly calm, 9 degrees, 2-3 metres vis not a lot to see but enjoyed being in the water anyway. Once you can get past the icy water flushing into your wetsuit, the numb fingertips and toes and drying off in a bitter northernly wind, it's a very pleasurable experience 
My computer is in for repair at the moment so I'm not posting much. Been out half a dozen times but no fish yet. vis is still low. Found numerous brown crabs, one lobster and a couple of spiders. The only fish I've seen are wrasse, a conger, and a brief glimpse of a couple of mullet. I'm sure there must be bass but I can't see the b*ggers in the gloom! Donnachad, if you want to see an Elios suit I've got one. Give me a ring.

This is my first post on this forum. In September I'm coming to Ireland for 14 days with my girlfriend and being a spearo i would like to take my speargun with me.
I'm from northern Adriatic and spearos here mostly use band guns (arbalete) size 90-100...
But the problem is that a 100 cm size gun has a 140 size shaft. Thats too big for Ryaniar (I would like to avoid paying the extra charge for big sporting equipment).
So my idea is to buy a 85 air gun (like sporasub/mares stealth).
Somebody wrote, that pneumatic/air guns are not alowed in Ireland. So I'm wondering if that is true?
