Yesterday was the first and only good diving day in a while. Due to family commitments I couldn't spare much time, so I dropped into a good bass spot for an hour or so. I was looking for a "biggun" and as I saw only fish to 4lb or so, I didn't shoot anything. Both Dennis and myself know of big bass caught from here by anglers (and returned) in the last two weeks.
As it was such a calm day it was better not to disturb the water by shooting small fish.
Dennis and Richie arrived just before I left and they didn't catch any either, though Dennis saw a big tail disappear into the weed at one point.
This morning I wanted to catch the "calm before the storm" so I got up at five o'clock and drove to a spot near the head of Kinsale. By six it was light enough but the sea was already beginning to look shaggy and vis was down from yesterday. Lots of baitfish were in this area and I swam two miles in total, taking a decent pollack, a small bass and two mackeral.
The bass was a snap shot in the gloom, and although legal, was much smaller than I'd normally take. The mackeral were coming so close that it was possible to track and hit them.
Today and yesterday were both a bit dissapointing as I should have seen more and better bass in both spots.

Sunfish and others. I know that Ireland is THE place for pollack and here in Guernsey we don't get them like you do. However up in the neighbouring Island of Alderney they got some good fishing. How about a 15lb pollack caught on a rod from a kayak and in only 20ft of water.

Hi Dave, that's a fine big pollack. Where I was yesterday I was fishing shallow water for bass, so the pollack I saw were in 20ft or less. There were plenty in the 4lb to 5lb range and when big shoals of baitfish are present, often even bigger fish will drlve right up into shallow water. The 4.5lb fish I took yesterday had it's stomach crammed with more sprats than I could hold in both hands!
Having said that, that's still a magnificent fish to catch in 20ft from a kayak. There's a small boat angling competition near here and they haven't had a fish like that for a few years. Most years I spear much better fish than they get.

try to get out three times. water was like milk. imposible to see anythink. why is that? becouse of lot of rain or what? got very upset...rrrrr. try next weeek maybe vis get better. any body knows good places near dublin (1hour drive) . share Please, please , please........
i dive in Dalkey, but lot of wrase and mullet, pollack very small, haven`t see any bass at all.

Hi Lads,
I am new here in Ireland, I have a few questions about weather conditions here. I don’t have much experience in ocean diving so please let me know what is important for choosing good day for diving, conditions like wind direction and strength, tides or swell. First thing is probably the right spot, I already experienced myself that calm water and no wind don’t guarantee the clear water, Would you recommend any good spots on the west cast, I live in Limerick at the moment, Cheers Mazi

Hi mazi, welcome. I'm from cork myself and dont know any spots in limerick. they are spearos in cork, kerry, galway and i think i remember someone from clare joined in a few months ago, you'll have to look back on this thread, they would be the nearest to you.
correct me if im wrong but i think there are a few freedivers and spearos in LIT. i think i read that somewhere...... might be worth lookin up mazi
Today I headed West to try for bass in a rocky area South of an area of sandbanks. On spring tides, sandeels gather on the banks in huge numbers and the bass gather to feed once the banks are covered. I figured they'd hang out in the rocky area at low tide, so off I went in the kayak.
The vis wasn't too good but in the second bay I tried, I started seeing a few bass. I hadn't any in the freezer at all and after half an hour I'd seen no big ones so I took a couple of nice table sized fish. As soon as I had my bag limit I started seeing big ones. By the time I got back to my kayak I'd seen five fish aproaching double figures. Who told them about the bag limit?rofl.
My neighbour had asked for some pollack so I paddled out to a nearby reef and anchored up there. I got him three fish before heading off to do the weeks shopping.
I think my new bass spot needs another look soon! Bass 4.4lbs and 4.5lbs. Pollack 8.5lbs, 4.6lbs and 4.4lbs.

Today I went to check out my new bass spot again. I saw a couple of big fish but didn't shoot. I wouldn't risk wounding an eight to ten pound fish and I couldn't get lined up with a "certain" shot, so they're still swimming. These big fish can be 20 years old and more, and produce way more eggs than smaller fish do. In my opinion it would be a sin to waste such a good breeding fish.
I took two more "pot" sized fish (4.6lbs and 5.5lbs) and now I won't disturb the place for a while.
I swam on for a few hours with my friend Dirk, checking out gullies and cracks. A grand day altogether.
