I'll have the neti pot ready for you and fill it with hot whiskey if the cold hasnt gone it may not cure the cold but I guaruntee you will forget about it.

Snorting whiskey eh. . . Seen it done wit vodka but the less said etc. I've been using the squeezey bottle every day for the diving season might step it up to twice a day see if that helps. Even if I can't hit depth ill splash around in the shallows terrorize some mullet r bugs.

Some cracking viz in Sligo at the moment we had about 10m plus on Sunday for our Discovery course. I was out again this morning and it's still about 6-8m. There are big winds forcast for tomorrow but hopefully it wont affect it too much. Some dates,
The main one is this Saturday the 18th we have our open day/evening at our freedive centre in Mullaghmore, Sligo.
Programme is as follows,
Boat to Innishmurray (at this stage we may be running two separate trips) First boat leaves at 10.30 am any one who wants to go spearing will be dropped off at various spots around the Island and will be brought back at 4-4.30
Second boat will depart 12.00 and be back at 5.-5.30. Its the same boat doing two runs and its a RIB so wear the wetsuit out but bring picnic stuff with you in case you get famished. Inishmurray itself is well worth a walk around, the last family left there decades ago but there was also an older monastic settlement there. It was/is famous for its cursing stones but to actually curse someone with them is a long drawn out process so you would really have to have a savage grudge to go through with it and the fables go that if the cursed person didn't deserve it the curse came back to you.
Anyone who wants to bbq their catch and enter the catch n cook comp please notify me as we will have one or two bbqs and one 2 ring gas hob so people need to be allocated times for prep and cooking. Hopefully this will be at 6.30pm
7.30 and in conjunction with the above local fisherman and crepe maker extradonaire Philipe will give a demonstration on how to fillet a fish to get the most meat from it. he's also handy for a recipe or two if plied with a glass of Guinness.
8.30pm Screening of Oceanmen the movie documenting the rivalry between Umberto Pelizzari (founder of Apnea Academy) and Pipin Ferraras. There is some magical cinematography in the film. This is free but donate something to the RNLI box if you can.
9.30 Head for the bar.
Feel free to bring family kids etc as well.
All evening we will have our swop/sell table so if you are looking to sell or buy some second hand kit please bring it along with you.
Let me know by mail or text (086 8099898)if you are attending the evening and or the boat and what time suits you best.

I'm in for the morning boat. I called u earlier and left a message. I won't take part in the cook-off but I'll use the cooking facilities!! All I need is a pot big enough for a lobster and his wheelchair!
would just like to say RIP to the two fisherman who died today outa Quilty, one of the spots myself and my brother have been this season a few times... stay safe out there guys...
Yes, RIP and thoughts for the families they've left behind, also for the man recovered near allihies. Its been a particularly bad year on the water...try and stay safe out there.
Re Flatfish,i was diving at work off the coast of Yarmouth in about 25m of water this summer and I never saw so many Dabs in my life and there was no prodding to be done they were swimming all over the place including up the nozzle of the dredging hose we were using!

Havn't got to do much spear fishing over the last couple of years after an enforced move to Dublin but love keeping track of how every one is getting on on the forum. Have even got to meet a few of you when you've called into my shop in Ringsend.
I was back home in Sligo for the Strandhill Surf Open over the bank holiday weekend and while the weather was great the waves were non-existent. At 2.30 they called off heats for the day and that left me free to head out spearfishing. The vis looked pretty good and with the lack of swell I decided to head for a spot that is usually very exposed to swell.
Over the last few years I have been keeping my ears open for any reports of bass being caught around Sligo. There are not many tales to tell but I had heard enough to make me think there had to be some about.
The water was balmy when I got in, (the air temperature was mid 20s and Id picked up a bit of sunburn on the walk out to the reef. The area I wanted to fish I only know from surfing and didn't realise quite how far out into the bay it extended. At low tide you could swim easily 100m off shore and still be in only 2m of water. The first 20mins I was in I saw only small wrasse, pollock and starfish. I expected to see a lot of mullet but they were absent. I had just finned in closer to the shoreline and thought this feels a bit more fishy when suddenly some big grey shadows swam quickly in from my left. I literally had a split second to think mullet before one of the fish presented itself perfectly. As it did I realised it was a good size bass and fired.
The fish swam down into the kelp and lay there. I was over the moon, bass are really to be found in Sligo!! As I went to put it on my stringer I realised that my spear had never penetrated fully. In fact it had bounced out. The point of the shaft had hit the fish just behind the gill plate and stoned it. Feeling doubly lucky, I finned for shore. I didn't see any more fish and I never got to really work out the size of the shoal but am seriously looking forward to going looking for them again. Fish weighed in at 5lb 12oz. Not a whopper but respectable enough
Thought that might give some added impetus to the trip this weekend. Wish I could make it!

Feargus , i will be on my own. kids are back in Lithuania for a summer, she is back next weekend . Gabiya was asking me about when we be visiting Sligo again to meet up with Niamh

sound danas we will see you then let me know what time you will be down at for the boat. ideally if you serious boys as we will call ye can be down for the first trip it will mean more time in the water but as you will be diving round an island you take a break etc. I will be out on the second boat and will bring some sambos etc but feel free to bring a packed lunch or something to eat sushi with.
