Hi lads get out today near Spanish point at 5 am with friend of mine and after half an hour get that my very first bass7.8lb. vis was from 3m to 5m, after that changed place and then come the problem, i get awful pain on my teeth when i was down for a nice pallock ,had to get to the closest rock and rest for 15-20min then get back to the water and headed back to the car, after another 15 min pain was gone fully! but when i tried to dive it come back stronger and i just get down only meter or less :waterwork . at the moment after 10 hours, 5 painkillers i still feel the pain what the f...... is going on i never had any problem with those teets .... and what to do now ?
Today was probably one of the best days out I've ever had, the vis was amazing and the sunny weather with a soft onshore breeze would have one believing they were on holiday somewhere in the Mediterranean. I had two sessions one this morning and the other after lunch...making the most of it while it lasts.
I headed off to a new spot in search of Gilthead Bream, I was told about this place over a year ago and sworn to secrecy but any time I had gone there before I had never seen any Giltheads. Last week I seen 5 and managed to shoot 1 but he put up such a fight and got off. So this morning I brought my 90cm to make sure I would get plenty of penetration, and I noticed the last time that they didn't come in so close to investigate.
The first one I came across was swimming with some Bass schoolies and I got him through the gills and out the side just behind his mouth, he took off and put up a great fight...I didn't want to pull him in too hard just in case he would tear off, because by now he had worked his way up the shaft and on to the mono. I tried to grab him several times but he managed to spike me with his dorsal every time I went near him, eventually I lifted him out of the water and got my fingers into his gills while I dispatched him with my knife. I seen quiet a few decent sized Bass but they were too close to shoot with the 90 as I was over them in less then a metre of water when I seen them. I seen another 4 Giltheads and shot another which tore off and missed one completely as the spear went sailing over his head when he was only 1.5 metres away from me.
For the afternoons session I switched over to the 75 to try for some Bass, I was only 50 metres from the shore when I spotted a Gilthead hiding beside a clump of weed, I stopped finning and let the current carry me up behind him...he never seen or heard me coming. I took the shot and got him right behind the gills and watched him fly up and down trying to get off, this time I held the end of the spear and pushed it into the sand while I slid my hand up the shaft to wedge him between it and the flopper. An hour or so later I had 2 Bass in the bag and took 1 flounder out of several that I seen on the way back in. All in it was a fantastic day out spearing, you don't get many days like this, which is probably just as well or I'd end up divorced...she wanted me to clean the gutters today :martial
The 2 Giltheads weighed in at 2.86lb and 4.02lb, the Bass were 4.08lb and 4.89lb.

Cheers Arrow...hopefully next time yours will stay on the spear. They really do put up a hell of a fight, I had one get away on me last week as well.
Foxy, I had my Gilty tonight. I oven baked it for 30 mins seasoned with olive oil, fresh ground pepper, sea salt, herbs and stuffed with lemon wedges. To go with it I made an onion, garlic and cream sauce and served it with rosti potato...absolutely delicious. It was very meaty, enough for at least four people and not unlike bass in texture, I'd definitely have it again. Oh, to add to my al fresco Mediterranean dining experience, a nice glass of Zinfandel Rose helped it all go down as the sun set. I hope this freakishly good weather lasts for the summer...I'd almost forgotten what it was like to have a week of hot sun here at home.
no not yet... Been meaning to ask Vasile about a cheap kayak setup that would lend itself to the task. I think it is necessary to go after deep big Pollock etc and check out ground. The last set up I had on the kayak would be too heavy for the banks board.
should be plenty of time to Cath a bigger cork bream Cork July Weather 2013 - AccuWeather Forecast for Cork Ireland
