Ireland Spearing 2013

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Just like I fry my flatties except a bit longer, looking forward to trying that..hope I can get another one now. ;)

Just looking for some guidance regarding spear fishing in Cork. I moved down from Mayo and only took up spearing lately (having only free-dived before). Yesterday was my first proper day out and I went under the cliffs at the Old head of Kinsale. It was a great day and i got my first fish with a spear (middle sized pollock). As I haven't been spearing for long I was still a bit edgy on my own and I was wondering if anyone around the area that could give me a few pointers and a bit of company in the water at some point over the rest of the Summer

I was down the Old head myself yesterday on the West side, although I only speared for a shortime as I was kayaking with a buddy and the misses.
Congrats on the first fish, I normally dive around East Cork and sometimes west Cork and your welcome to tag along..
sent you a pm with my number

God I hate turning up for a dive only to realise I forgot some kit, did it with my weight belt last night.
Trying to dive in a 6mm suit for Pollack is not the easiest, ended up with 4 though, one decent size and 3 small to midrange, lots more fish around but flapping around under water I could'nt get near them.

Cheers Daniel...we'll miss you, you're welcome to stay a few days with me for some spearing when you make it back over for a holiday. Who knows I might even make it over to Bergen next year...I have a good friend in Sweden that wants me over to visit in Goteberg. All the best for you and your family in Norway.

Poped out on way home from work. Conditions were awesome... saw this lobby out for a stroll. Picked up that and these two bass within 10 mins then spent the next hour surrounded by shoals and shoals of bass... nothing massive in the shoals like the last spot, but plenty of hope for the future... am gutted I dont have a video as I even caught the tail of one bass :( they are very brave in numbers!

Also got my first plaice albeit a little on the small side... i could only see his head the rest was buried and when I stabbed him... I realised that he wasn't terribly big :(

Nice bass and lobby Bd, I was out last night also...seen a few bass but not as many as I've seen before and they were mostly on the small side. Took a nice flounder just under 1.5lb on the way back in.

Good to see everyone's loving the good weather! I got out on the weekend, but instead of driving somewhere where the diving's good - I decided to go to Howth. I've only dived there a couple of times before, and it's generally pretty devoid of fish, but it is nearby for me.

The dive was useless. Vis much worse than I hoped. No fish, save for micro-pollack, stupid wrasse and dopey dogfish. Once I'd abandoned all hope of shooting anything, I came back to where I'd got in and in only about 1.5m of water I saw the only rock for the whole dive that screamed out to me; "If I were a lobster, I'd want to sit on under my ledge on the shady side". And sure enough, this girl was sitting there.

So Howth managed to slightly redeem itself. I'm raising status in my little book of dive locations from 'guaranteed exercise in futility' to 'probably a futile exercise, but you might find a lobster' :duh

Just a little vid I shot last night, I was out for 2.5 hours but the battery on the gopro only lasted 1.25 hours.

Think you should rename it 'the ones I let away';).The Giltys wouldn't tease the spear like that:D:D:D.

No they certainly would'nt...and as long as they're a decent size they'll be dangling on the end of it :p

I decided to go back and have a look for something bigger tonight...this is all I could find :D

I took the the kayak out today in courtmac bay. It's only my second time out with it this year but I wanted some fish to give to a friend.
I had a great time, catching 4 pollack, 2 bass and a good sized mullet. All fish were in the 3 to 4.5 lb range. No photos as I forgot the camera and gutted the fish in the water, dropping them off on the way home.

Great stuff Sunfish...nice to see you back posting again. I might have to start cleaning the fish out at the beach as well, the bins only get collected every fortnight and with the good weather it stinks to high heaven :(

Ya shouldn't be taking the schoolies Der:D,what size,SR ?

He looks bigger but he weighed in at 5.94lb. I missed another that was the same size or just a shade bigger when my trigger jammed. I squeezed it several times while I had a bead on him hiding in the weed and eventually he got fed up waiting for me to make a move and he swam off as slow as you like just to mock me.
It took me several minutes playing with the trigger lock to free the spear and get it working again but it didn't release the shooting line properly when I got a shot at another. I'll have to take it apart and give it a good clean and lube. There were plenty of good sized flounder to be had as well but I got some last night so I didn't bother taking any more.

Nice lobby regan and great vid derek!
Forgot to say, my last bass was 9lbs.... nice size :) still aint broken the double yet !

Went out again last night with Chealy and met Dylan when I was leaving, how'd you get on?

I had a bad night, swam straight for africa for miles hoping to stumble across pollock but didnt see a single on of decent size... when I finally found a shoal there was nothing sizable in there so after a few dives and a few smallies on my board I went back in... but it was a loooooooooong swim... I was exhausted. I took a break over 5m of water and a pure sand bottom and as I was catching my breath I saw what could have been a decent flounder and as I swam down to stab it it sped off... as it sped off I thought it didn't have the rough lateral line.... hmmmm... but he only sped off about 4 m away and settled on the floor. This time I shot him and was rewarded with my second ever plaice... in 2 nights!

Had another flounder, but I will defo be going back here flattie bashing! This is the area a boat picked up a 6lb plaice a few years back!!!

I gave up on the Pollack as only saw one decent size fish in over 15 dives.

Ended up with 3 Flounder but the place was full of them, shot my first one and 5 or 6 swam away as I was putting it on the stringer, also saw a few smaller Bass but they were all out of range.

The light was starting to go abit as I was swimming back and for the first time I came across a lobster making a run for it, I went to grab it and it went crazy, nipped me then bolted into the kelp.
