hi stavros,
chiara, (the italian girl that had the bo) didn't have any problem with the rope. the accident happened for some other reason.
i think that happened to the french gilrs that were diving next to us at the same time.
but it's true that there was no safety available all during the official training.

obviously the reason why the comp got cancelled is not only the broken bottom plate. there were a lot of other issues, but the people working to fix the massive organizational hole just came back and said it's gonne be fine tomorrow. inshallah.

Just at a time where peoplee start taking freediving serious with lots of very well organised competitions behind us , this starts happening.
Lets pray they turn it around 180 degrees and prove us all wrong.

I got a question from one of the AIDA Greece board members today asking: "How come the competition you went to in Egypt (3ple depth) was so well organised and well run...and this is such a mess? Why didn't they use the same equipment and location? " And I said it is not about place and equipment...its about people ... that comp (3ple depth) was Swedish/Italian run...thats why

I wish all you guys and gals down there the best possible fun during this thing and good performances when the time comes to dive.

I agree with what AndySwe is saying that the Head people of AIDA should just take control of this thing and work to make it happen but from what I am hearing from competitors and team captains down there thats what the AIDA judges and top staff are doing...trying to make the best out of a big mess.

I also have to express my fears of the negative side-effects this poorly organised comp will have on future events... I can just imagine approaching a major sponshor for covering costs of next year's event and they will naturally ask to see what the competition was like last year...

what can one say

Stavros, i think you have every right to criticize the organisers, just dont do it on account of nationality, thats pretty uncivilized and ignorant to say the least. please keep your comments in perspective... one of my close friends who is the egyptian freediving champ and also a member here could tell you much worst stories on his experience in the Cyprus event, but again it was the organisers not the the Cypriots..and despite that he enjoyed his vacaion as some of the people actually there seem to be doing.....

Thanks for the link, Wolle! Nile Sports would be probably better, but I do not see it on this website. I also tried installing a program called
SATELLITE TV for PC - 2007 Elite Edition which promises access to 3,000 satellite channels, but unfortunately most of their names are written in Chinese, so I found it practically impossible to find out whether Nile TV and Nile Sports are there too.

I also have that program running and found only Nile TV as egyptian channel. The only thing we need is knowing WHEN to watch. Because sitting 24 hours in from of this Tv stream waiting for 20 minutes freediving is not my current plan ;-)

Well, there are two (low quality) Nile TV streams on the Egypt governmental website:

Live Nile TV News
Live Nile TV International (English subtitles)

I guess that on the news channel they could speak about the WC, but the question about the time remains. It looks though, like the news repeat in a loop, just like at most news channels, so if there is something about the WC, I guess you can catch it, with little bit patience. The news channel is in Arab only, though.

There are also some news clips (including sport videos) on the website of the Egypt State Information Service (in English), but so far I do not see anything abut freediving there

This is not relative to the WC but I heard it from the Greek team captain who was informed about this at the team captain meeting last night : They were informed yesterday that a Swedish freediver died yesterday during static training in a public pool while he was training alone. (This did not occure in Egypt - I think it was Sweden) Does anybody have any information on this? I am afraid it is most likely true since the team captains were officially informed of this yesterday... (aparently it was someone doing 7min+ statics but I was not told who...)

It was in the paper last week, but at least at that time, the article said that he had been taken to the hospital and was in critical condition, but not dead. I can only hope that that has not changed for the worse. He had been sitting on the bottom with some weights and brought up unconcious. They managed to get his heart going after some time and he was taken to the hospital. That's all I know. At least from the article I got the impression he was training alone :(

But I would like this discussion to be in another thread, since it has nothing to do with the WC...

I had hope that this outcome shoulden have come, but I've to read the article Jome talk about, and I hope that the rest about this topic will be talked about in the safety section where I posted the article.

I hope that I havent upset anyone by doing so, and I offer my condolences to his family.
