Long Live Free Speach! Not!

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Spearboard is a reflection of it's origins: the American South and it's sportsmen.

In my opinion, if (for example) somebody frequents a spearfishing oriented website and wants to debate the ethics of spearfishing, being told to SHUT UP! or GO AWAY! is not inappropriatley rude, it's direct and to the point. What's the point of having a 30 page thread on the supposed immorality of scuba-spearfishing amongst a bunch of people who very much enjoy the right to scuba-spearfish? :duh That, to me, is the better definition of rudeness.

And thats from a mod. Funny how few pics and stories Ive seen from him over the years?. I ask you again Amphib, wheres the challenge in spearing large tuna that swim 20' down 10' from you? Ask Miles how it goes. Ive done it like that to. The world record bluefin was shot point blank on the surface... In fact, most of my big wahoo were shot from the surface, is it sporting because I dont use tanks? In fact Bill the only reply you will get to anything different here is...it should be illegal, or it is immoral, ect.

never been a picture taker. naver been a story teller. sorry to disapoint :)

i don;t belive scuba dive spearing should be illegal, or that it is imoral. I do have strong reservations as to it's ethics in the relm of SPORT fishing.

I'm going diving now. back in 14hrs :wave

Long lived correctly-spelled 'speech'.

Although I rather like the neologism 'speach' - seems like a cross between 'speech' and 'screach'. I salute the person who has coined it, and with his or her permission, will use it in my writing and speaking until it finally appears in the Oxford English Dictionary.

Um, I believe he said, "You sound like my wife", not "look" like my wife. You really aren't the sharpest knife in the drawer, are you?

Jeez i go diving for a couple of days and world war 3 breaks out, dam i would have loved to get into that one.
So who is this nob head " Steel Slinger "" and who are his mates that think that they can get on Deeper Blue and start abuesing everyone just becuse we dont share their views, they remind me of the sort of guttless little people who yell abuse at you from a distance but when you catch them and are about to tear them a new one they start grying and begging for mercy.
Im all for freedom of speach by there has to be a line drawn and if you cross it then bad luck.
I happen to agree with Amphi and his views and Scuba/spearing but i dont expect to be insulted by Steel Winger and his mates if they dont agree.
Let them stay on their own little Red Neck Wonder Land spearo site and if they post again here i think we should all use the old Buddy Ignore button and just get rid of them.

Careful now making out of line statements like that. I frequent spearboard and enjoy it. Don't you suggest for a second that you can take a select few (who by the way are not rednecks) and label the rest of the site lest you want me to label everyone from Perth Aus. a closed minded imbecile...you wouldn't want me to do that because we both know that it wouldn't be true.

I can assure you that people like Miles and Iyadiver are not rednecks but they contribute to the site fairly regularly and have no run-ins w/ anyone. I see VERY little squabble go on over there and ALOT of light hearted razing...its generally Bill Mac who gets himself into trouble by saying something he could have very well used a bit more tact on and save himself and the hassle of stressing whatever his point is supposed to be on that thread.

As for using the ignore button, USE IT! You'll come across people you don't particularly like. No one said everyone had to agree.

This mans fish was a huge accomplishment, if someone doesn't see it as that then there is no need to reply...at all. As for the open mindedness of this site, yeah right!! Just see how fast a holier-than-though Freediver jumps on someone for not holding their breath and shooting a fish.

If you don't care for scuba shooting then don't reply, it won't change anything in your life or mine...Hell we're in different countries so why have something negative to say about a totally legal and accepted practice here just because you don't care for it and its not legal in alot of the rest of the world.

I'd like to applaud those on here that wanted to question the dive technically and see what planning went into this event, the fish and its biology, and make the attempt to see if they could learn something from that trip.

Excellent point, and I agree wholeheartedly. However, the SHUT UP and GO AWAY stuff is by no means limited to the scuba vs. freedive subject.

One of my favorite personal examples was when some one inquired about the legality of taking fish with powerheads in Florida. I replied that I had no idea about the legality, but would suggest that he maintain a low profile with his powerhead around the dock so as to avoid giving more ammunition to the PETA types. This caused a storm of profanity and name calling, and I was told that the guy didn't have to hide what he was doing because it was legal, so perceptions did not matter.

Later, it seemed rather ironic when the guy who led that abuse of me was engaged in a discussion of whether Spearboard should maintain a lower profile with stories and photos of fish because of concern about spearfishing tournaments being limited in the keys. It appears public perceptions mattered after all.

Anyway, rudeness is by no means limited to scuba vs. freediving. Its a standard mode of communication for many, and something in which they take pride.

Well, theres that thing where people jump into conversations about subjects they have a problem with - pretty common on the internet. But here we have a pretty broad-based board - even within a category like spearos - there are varying perspectives on scuba, groupers etc. So really - when you post a pick of a guy with a huge grouper speared while on scuba - you have to expect some varying opinions. It just goes with the territory - so why take it personally? In fact - why take anything written on the internet personally?

Personally - heres a guy who has succeeded in combining the pleasureable with the profitable - so, assuming he brings a certain ethos to the game - which seems to be the case based on what a couple people who know him have said - I see no problem.

Speaking of Peta - recently a young woman here organized a protest in front of a local restaraunt that serves fish........

That reminds me - when you have a salad - has anyone else noticed the arugala looking back at you? Its' erie, man.

One of the things that bother me there, is that there are some guys that are supposed to be experianced spearos by the storys they tell or the way there buddies talk about them but when someone post a question about something they don't have they often blow of the poster or give him some onelined answer.Case in point .The people doing the name calling should have answered the question with "Harvesting fish in state waters with a powerhead is prohibited" .It says that in big bold print under the spearfishing
section in the FL saltwater fishing guide.

I often hear "We are all spearfishers so we should stick together" but I don't
think it's true. There are people that I share hobbies with that I don't associate with because of the kind of people they are.I had a person tell me a story about the same kind of things and at the time I hardly knew him but I consider him a friend now.I was thinking about something when Gene Higa
passed away and also after Randy Fry passed away.I never had the chance to know those people but i'm sure they would be rembered the same even if they didn't spearfish .Some people might not be remembered that way no matter how many fish they shoot or what records they break. As for Bills
or anybody elses political views I don't hold any of that stuff against you .I have read thru some of the post and have forgotten about it in half the time it took to read it .But I see things differently because of the person I am.
I don't fit the stereo type that some people think I should be in . I would't say that spearboard is a redneck site but I can understand why you would say that but there are quite a few good people that aren't narrow minded.
Don't hold the actions a few against the many.

The Reason i said the site is a Red Neck Wonder Land was because we had one or two of their Forum mentors attacking post for no other reason than to stir up trouble.
Steel Slinger on his 2nd or 3rd ( i think ) ever post on D/B had a personal but quite lame attack on me ( not the sharpets knife).
He made no other point on that post all he was doing was trying to rev us up
without making many vallid points.
I realise that the people that use that site arnt red necks and they may have some very good post but when you get a Forum mentor do that Well ???
Im dont mind a good fight but it came accross as one site attacking another because thay didnt like our post .
Any enough said their site and members arnt red necks but i dont know about their mentors.

That's a very broad stroke if I have ever seen one. Do you mind being more specific, or better yet, bring it up on SB if you genuinely want an answer to your question.

I don't really follow what you are saying in the second part of the paragraph. Was this is a thread in particular, or are you just quoting a known regulation?

Just to clarify...you are right, you cannot harvest fish in state waters with a powerhead, you can however in federal waters, 9 miles off shore in the Gulf of Mexico and 3 miles on your side of the pond.
