New gun build

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
It ok jonny that's my ferrets blanket!

A ok, carbon fibres can be nasty.

I have a friend who makes parts using a hoover to vacuum bag the part - consolidates well and reduces resin use. vacuum bagging on a budget :)

Thanks Jonny but, I dont think I could apply anywhere near the pressure required to squash the foam?
And yes when the fibers are hard they can cause very nasty splinters!!

Mart, if you could just video the whole carbon laying up process next time we won't ask so many questions ;)

Great work bud, a blast to see, thanks.

Now I need a trigger!
That old chestnut again - I have two Abellan units lying around but they are two high at 30mm as this gun is only 20mm thick.
I can think of ways around this just by thickening the area around the trigger housing, however, I remember the Benthos unit I bought for the strong back gun, I think that was only 20mm?
I also seem to remember it was very expensive!!
The trigger needs to be light too, I am going to have a look around....

Lovely looking triggers Don but I fear they would be to deep & to heavy.
I would need to cut down the actual trigger too because I want to set the handle 200mm forward of the mech & link it back.

So who can tell me what this trigger is like apart from being very cheap?

The Excalibur is not a bad trigger, and very practical to mount. Very smooth action with a single 16 or 18mm band set, but starts feeling rocky with a double bands set.

But then you're making a luxury gun, all hand made in carbon and wood. For how good a plastic mass produced trigger can be, maybe your gun is worth more than that?

Check these reversed triggers:

If you’re not looking for a euro cut then there is one roundabout possibility. I'm not sure what the dimensions of the Alexander mechanism are, and all searches just brought up old threads of people asking what the dimensions are, but it looks pretty low. I would think that if you re-located the spring higher on the trigger, then shaved off the mounting holes it would be pretty thin. Of course you'd have to mount it using the pivot holes but that level of inconvenience seems pretty small to someone taking on this level of build.

Don is right I am afraid as this gun is small, only 20mm thick, this means the balance is critical & a lightweight mech is very important.
I could counter the trigger with a lightweight hollow handle but i just feel I might as well stick to the theme & keep every thing scaled down.

Not to split hairs, but a heavy mech won't change the balance of a rear handled gun, because your hand is the pivot, right? It will change the Buoyancy, which would affect the way it floats on it's own, or when you swim with it.

Probably the lightest of the common "American" style mechs that I have seen was the one that Steve Veros of Poseidonsub was making, but I don't think he sells them anymore. I think he's on here as "Metelin" though, if you wanted to ask.

This might be outside your comfort zone, but you obviously have considerable skill with carbon fiber, so . . .

Why not take the guts out of a Neptonics or Nile Tec trigger, and make yourself a CF cartridge to house them? That would probably cut the weight by well over half, while re-using the components that most require precision.

Now that is a great idea for the future! However I have ordered a another Benthos for this prototype.
I have been busy building more components that I will show you later today.
I have also bought a different style of carbon fibre, a multi directional weave that has a more noticeable design.
