It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
turns out that my sister is having her graduation party on saterday so im coming back home for saterday night and in this case i will stay for sunday morn if you guys are still down for goin out i will be available sunday morning. i hope viz is goin to be good. cuz last time i went out i couldnt see anyting. it was 5-7 if i was lucky. not good at all. but let me know if you guys still want to go where to meet and what time.

haha thats funny you ask, i too got the JBL travel spear.. i didnt realize the one i ordered didnt come with a paralyzer tip though.. just a rocktip i think.. should be fine for today though.. and i can always find a paralyzer to fit it right? i kept searching their site to get the specifics but i think all their poles are 6mm threads right? cause i would like to get different tips.

i was also looking at the gat-ku spears for the future.. and possibly his paralyzer tip (the blue flared one) instead of a regular one. not sure yet.

you game for this weekend aesthetics? You have a car right? If you wanna meet up somewhere and drive with us that is OK. Remember...the early bird catches the worm.....but this bird don't wait around for nothin'. Just let me know before Friday.

i would be cool with going on sunday.. if i went both days i think my GF would be in a pretty pissy mood by sunday afternoon rofl

consider me in for sunday morning.. and yes, i drive. we will set everything up here in the thread,. im not much of an early bird (i can never fall asleep before 1 or 2am) but i will set my alarm and everything.. and hopefully ill get up.. but just in case, lets post all the specifics in here.. like where it is (directions if needed).. what time to be there (example: 7am-11am) and so on.. that way if for some reason i wake up a little late i can still rush down there and find you guys out in the water.

i live almost right on PCH in huntington so its just cruising 10-15 miles south on it to hit most of these laguna spots.

i live in costa mesa so im not to far either. i was thinking that maybe we can all carpool or something find a good meeting spot and head out there together. i dont know where anyone else lives so i cant really say where. somewhere central to all of us tho. about the paralizer spear tip. i bought one at sports chalete in south coast plaza. it was like $25 something like that. and it was the barbed one. so the fish doesnt slip off the spear. just a reminder you should have a fishing lisence with a ocean fishing stamp on it if you want to go out spearing. i mean you can risk it, but its always safe to have one. i also bought that at sports chalete. cant remember how much that was tho. i have never been asked to show it but i have one just in case.

yeah i just got mine a few days ago lol.. and got the ocean stamp on it. i think it came to $50 but its different for different age ranges.

im about to head down to check out crescent bay.. just ate and im gonna stretch and relax for a bit.. get all my stuff ready. probably meeting a buddy down there when he finishes some designs.

i know sports chalet has them, ill probably go get one in a few days, i think for the first trip or two ill be ok with just the tip i got.. but definitely wanna get the paralyzer soon. guess ill know after today how much ill need it or not right away lol.

what cross streets in costa mesa? i lived there for a year off harbor/adams.. and my school is by ikea (art institute).. plus we are always up at metro pointe or south coast looking around. just wondering.

see you all back on here in a few hours! i have a sony DSC-T1 (cybershot) with water housing that i bought for bodyboarding shots.. but now i get to use it for this! ill try to get a few pictures if possible.

Alright, is sounds like there are a couple of us good for sunday, Ill know for sure by tomorrow afternoon. Time and place that is all were lacking, I too am an early bird but any one on the late shift can always meet up later.

Aesthetic, drop me a line later if you got the time, I am curious to hear how Cresent Bay was.

Joel

im back.

crescent bay was pretty fun.. it was alot of getting used to my gear and everything, and it was my first actual hunt. i went out on the right hand side where there are plenty of rocks and whatnot.. from the beach to the point. i mostly just saw garibaldi, small bass, and thats about it.. almost nothing worth shooting at..

i was only in the water for about 2 hours or just short of it.. i kinda got sick, felt like i started to get a minor heartburn and even just swimming on the surface i felt like i was getting a little lightheaded towards the end.. almost like i hadnt eaten, but i ate shortly before i left.. so im not sure what that was about.

it was a nice little experience overall, though. my mask kept fogging up on one side.. so that was a constant pain having to keep surfacing and rinsing.. never seemed to help much.

so between the poor visibility (of my mask, not the water) and not going too far out, mostly saw small/medium bass and lots of garibaldi. i took a shot at a nice medium sized bass but missed by about an inch, and he was gone lol.. so thats alright, at least i managed to get close enough.

one thing i noticed is that my breath hold sucked.. i dont know if its because im not used to holding my breath with my wetsuit and weights on, and all that gear, or if its just been awhile since i really tried to hold it awhile and dive. who knows, im sure itll get better and better though.

next time i go, im debating just using boardshorts and fins.. seems like ill be alot more free.. but then again, even with my wetsuit there were some cold currents that would come up outta nowhere, usually closer to the bottom. what do you guys think?

aes,
Well it seems like you had a cool time for the most part. You can either pick up anti fog paste for your mask at any dive shop or sports store or use good old fashion spit.

I am sure that once you get use to your gear ie. wet suit weights and spear you feel more comfortable and your breath hold will improve over time.

Now that summer is here and the water is warming up I will wear my trunks only if I just up in the shallows, but for diving any deeper that 10-15 I prefer my suit, not to mention it will protect you from scrapes and scratches if you are around any reef or rock.

good luck
Joel

awesome, thanks. ill look into the paste or sprays that they have. i tried tooth paste, cause i read it somewhere a few separate times.. but i guess it didnt work, lol..

hey guys im going to be in newport beach from july 1st to the 7th and was just wondering where some good places to spear were. i have been reading this thread but being from utah i don't know where these places are so directions would be nice. oh yeah, im 16 but don't have my licence yet so the closer they are the better

WE ON THIS FOR WEEKEND OR WHAT SHMOLEBEAM?
Piggy and the baby are gonna meet me somewhere along the way or at your pad when we're done. Call me tonight - we'll just be BBQing most likely.

aesthetics - the light-headedness most likely came from the amount of time in the water, not being used to being submerged face down, and constantly looking down towards the bottom. You can be easily disoriented, especially at a sandy bottom such as crescent. If there is heavy surge in the water as well, then forget it.....you are gonna get mixed up real good without experience. Give it time, it doesn't happen overnight. As for your heartburn, that happens to me as well. Although it has not been as bad as when I used to smoke, but occassionaly I will get it. I believe that continously breathing through a tube into the open air leads to a drying effect on the throat and mouth. Drinking a lot of water before I go out seems to keep my throat from drying out and holds off the onset of the dreaded heartburn.

I am a trunks and fins kind of guy during summer, but unfortunately wetsuits are a fact of life here in CA.

I must say that the freedom of trunks is unsurpassed though.

In fact.......I LOVE TRUNKS!!!

Ok, I said it.....I LOVE TRUNKS....nuff said

the key to the breath-hold is remaining calm when descending. Don't "puff" up before going down would be my best tip. Regulate your breathing and remain calm. That will come with experience. FYI....the toothpaste does work. I find the best way is to have a mask that fits properly, then rinse it in the sink with cold fresh water, apply toothpaste (not gel, or Aqua Fresh with freshening stripes, etc.). GOOD OL' FASHION TOOTHPASTE. Rub in real good inside the entire mask, let it dry. Once completely dried, rinse it off in the sink with cold water again while using your finger to rub off ALL the paste, let the mask dry off completely and you're ready to roll. I still spit it in it when I get in the water for good measure and this always works.

i would have to agree with most of the stuff kanak said but about the heart burn if i eat right befor i get in teh water i seem to get teh same feeling. i dont knwo what its from possibly the food trying to come up. umm light headedness might be caused from the swells even if they are small. i sometimes get alittle light headed and sort of sea sick and have to go in. and breath hold time as many had said befor that will come as time goes on. im still waiting for that to come to me. haha i dont have much of a breath hold time either. and its kinda hard to practise out of water cuz its a totally differant experience than it is in the water.

about this weekend i will be working tomorrow but i can make it out on sunday morning if we all plan on going out to crecent bay. i guess we need to establish a meeting spot and time so how about we meet up at insiration point in corona del mar. if you dont know where that is here is how you get there. if you are goin south on pch you turn right on marguerite. then you go all teh way to the end of that street and turn left on ocean blvd. and go down about 2 streets till you see a grassy area right befor orchid ave. we can meet on the grass at about 7 AM ? if you have a better spot and time let me know.

do you have the address of where youre staying? that way we could figure out where you'll be and where these places are in relation to you

i remember seeing margaurite street on my way back yesterday, i dont know if its a good spot or not but im up for anything.. and im sure if joel or kanak say its fine, then itll be a nice spot.

i might go out later today.. but i think ill just use trunks today. not sure yet.. im gonna meet up with my buddy for a bit and then head down.. possibly crescent again to check the south side out.. but this wont be til like 2 or 3pm.

ill check back here to find out the time to meet and everything.

im going to add to everyones rep in here, i think we are really getting some frequent activity in here.. as opposed to alot of other threads with only weekly or 2-3 days in between posts.. sometimes more!

you would just that little balance beam icon next to the post number (upper right above join date) and just say a little somethin about that person or the post.. then itll add rep for them! and we can all get a little rep and be considered active members on the site. ill get beamjoel, matesz, and kanak for now.. anyone else lemme know.

edit: k did it.. not sure how long it takes to go through but i got you all.

dang where is everyone?

well hopefully we can get something set up in stone this evening, so we can all have a fun day tomorrow of catching plenty of fish hopefully.. lol.

yea what happend to everyone? well im still plnning on going tomorrow and im bringing a friend with me so there will be more people. haha i just called him and he told me that he was out in corona del mar yesterday and he caught a 46lb bat ray. he said that its wing span was 4 ft lets hope we can get that lucky...

i went out today again to crescent bay.. saw a couple rays, seals, dolphin, etc.. as for fish, saw some decent bass, nice corbinas.. my friend claimed that he saw a legal-sized halibut free swimming near some rocks.. and i ended up nailing a couple of surf perch. i know they arent the most challenging maybe, or the best tasting, but i wanted to at least try.. now they are sizzling away on the skillet

im cool with going out tomorrow, whoever wants to go. we can go to crescent, or the place matesz mentioned (off marguerite).. i dont care really, but lets figure it out tonight!
