Shooting fish that rip off is most certainly not brilliant, it's the complete opposite...

Time to improve your breath holds, aim and general hunting skills. If you're just maiming fish, you shouldn't be spearing.

Kind of have to agree, its very bad press for what is a very humane/selective and sustainable form of fishing when done right. It wont take many mullet caught by rod anglers or washed up on the shore with holes in them to increase hostility towards spearing from everyone. If you are 50/50 about a shot maybe don't take it.

I agree, if there is hesitation if the fish is on the limit of your guns range then maybe you shouldn't take the shot.
Bro who the hell do you think you are telling someone they shouldn't be spearing.

Ummm... that wasn't quite what I meant... having read it again, it does sound a little mean - not my intention.

I wasn't trying to personally insult anyone, I just meant that if you're having fish rip off on a regular basis though, you're obviously doing something a little wrong.

I don't think anyone can disagree with that? No offence intended.

Bro's comment is very "too the point" and perhaps could be seen as a little harsh but knowing him, he did not mean to belittle or offend Denian in anyway. So handbags away.

Justifiably, I think he does raise a very fair point regarding limiting the shots one does take in order to minimise the amount of perfectly healthy fish that end up as crab bait due to poorly placed shots though. Or as Foxfish fish alludes too, just don't admit it on an open forum where any Eco warrior can be lurking! Shooting and injuring fish is in the same vane as the hotly debated, undersized fish topic, some people are a little prickly with it and so it's best avoided!

Keep hunting Denian, we all love the photos and viz updates!

Went for my first swim yesterday South of the Llŷn Peninsula. Still waiting for my speargun but thought it will be a good opportunity to get used to my gear and get some practice in. Water vis was pretty good at around 5m closer in to 10m plus further out.

Initially only saw flatties, wrasse and a shoal of sandeels, moving in closer I saw a few nice bass hanging between the weeds and a shoal of 15 or so bass moving past me. Really wished I had my speargun but hey, there's always next time.

Got 2 spider crabs but let them go as they were female. All in all it was great to just get under the water. Think I need more lead tho. Had 4kg on my belt (I'm around 85kg and have 5mm suit) really struggled staying on the bottom, kept wanting to float up. My sinuses also gave me hell diving down so that will need attention. Hopefully get out again within the next few weeks and report back with a few nice fish.

There's been some mention about improving breath holds and bottom times, I'm curious what are typical hold times people are putting in whilst diving and what you're finding as optimum for getting fish. Please tell....

Sounds like you saw a lot . Realistically id say you were looking at double what you have on now , maybe even more for shallow spots , but air on the side of being underweighted rather than over weighted, especially when your learning.

Typically a minute for myself , always feel like an extra 30seconds would really benefit me . I would say best chance of fish is 40-60 seconds for me .

I did suspect I'll need more but forgot to take more weights with me, will add a few more kg next time and see how it goes, thanks.

My average dive is around 1:20, a bit less if it's deep, maybe a bit more if it's shallow, I generally see fish between the mid to the end of the dive. Very rarely in the first 30 seconds.

Once I've warmed up my dive times are typically 1 - 1:20. I'm still struggling to find the fish though!
