Riffe, JBL or sea Hornet???

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
What a wealth of info and hard-won knowlege. Makes we want to run out get a riffe mt0s or 1s - problem is the fish around here, in addition to being only a few legal ones, are so full of chemicals they'll probably explode on impact!

I've been reading the great lakes fish advisories...really sad. :(

Louis,

You might really want to consider (for the fish you are hunting) a No Ka Oi or Island even perhaps. Like i said since it's the Mid-Handel series it won't feel as long, but since you are doin gbluewater it will help with range a lot. Especially in you rhigh vis conditions. THe Hawaiian is a great gun, i have one but you might need more range. You can still use the No Ka Oi or even the island in the reef with the mid-handel. I'd talk to some people with experience on this (i.s whatever shop you end up buying it at) and get there 2 cents as well.

Your definetly looking in the right direction though i think.

No, butt really!

Kinda puts a new slant on the old "yo ho, yo ho, a Pirates life fer me..." huh? Happily the current object de blonde, of my afflictions, uh, affections enjoys Greek cooking as well. :inlove Butt that's another story. :p

Yes, a 5/16 shaft is going to want to make an unballasted, light gun want to flip ends, but as he's going after grouper and tuna with one gun :hmm , I'd err on the side of thicker shaft mo bettah, and go the muzzle stabilizers addition with some judicious milling and application of some lead strips in them to counter the tendency of the gun to want to take out your teeth if you forget in the excitement of the moment to back up the butt of the gun with your other hand. I'll cop to have forgotten to do this. Twice. :blackeye I mean, the guy was going on about how cool it would be to be able to add wings, an aluminum muzzle, etc$$$. Toss the $100 to Jay for the muzzle stabilizers and go hit the pool to learn on the thing. Remember, it's his first go at this. A newbie has zero need to strap on an Island.

Myself, if I had to figure the loss of a shaft for everything over 30 pounds, I'd start popping everything under and save the ducats for gas/diesel. :waterwork Hey, that was a nice WSB you were holding up on Spearboard the other day, Bill. Are things waking up down there?

A bent spearshaft is not a total loss because......

The gaps in Yo mammas teeth are so big she uses my bent spearshafts as toothpicks.... :thankyou

Erik told me that one at an ass pirate convention...

Icarus is right, a thicker shaft will bend less. And some other good advice is dont buy a cannon as your first and primary gun. The Hawaian is a good all around gun that can be used in most hunting situations. It you are really going for bigger game such as Tuna then I would get a whole different set up just for those fish. I dont think there is a gun that is perfect for everything but the Hawian is as close as your gonna get.

I agree that there is no gun that is perfect for everything. I've been biting my tongue and trying to stay within the choices implied by the title of the thread, but if I had to stick with just one gun, it would be the 55" Wong Magnum Hybrid shown in this second photo of the fish I shot yesterday.

It has the mass to handle a 5/16" shaft, the wood butt section has an enclosed track to make loading easier and prevent shaft whip, it can take three 5/8" bands without undue recoil, and its short enough to swing easily and handle in thick kelp.

Sorry for throwing more shit in the game at this late date.:)

Staying withing the parameters of the thread, a Riffe teak mid-handle is the way to go.

Right...

There is no perfect gun for every different kind of fish and fishing style :duh ... But so far seems like a midhandle between 50" and 55" are the best deals. I don't mind to overkill instead of having fish laughing loud at me rofl . And Bill, remember that I'm a cheap bas#&%d!! It will be great to own a 55" wong magnum hybrid  , but... Not yet! BTW, nice gun , great shot, and nice piece of fish, seems like you really enjoy those guns, thick shafts and slip tips.

We'll be in touch guys!
Best wishes.

Hiya Luis

Just had a look at the Wong website (http://www.wongspearguns.com/). The hybrids prices seem to be about the same as the Riffe's in the 55" class.

Worth looking in to............:D:D:D

Since I screwed up the train of thought by mentioning Wong guns, and now that Miles has referred you to the Wong site, I feel obligated to make sure you and any other innocent bystanders understand the differences between the regular hybrids and the new magnum hybrids. The regular hybrids use 9/32" shafts, have an open track in the butt, and have no extra lead ballast in the butt. The magnum hybrids have an enclosed track in the wood butt, use 5/16" shafts, have lead ballast in the butt so that they can handle the heavier shaft without excessive recoil, and have extra wood to balance the lead.

I have used the regular hybrids for years with great success, and have taken fish up to 54 pounds with them. I'm sure the guns could take much bigger fish, but its not their fault that I have not introduced them.

I just got the magnum, and the fish shown earlier in the thread is my first shot with it. The attached photo shows how the old 55" hybrid and the new 55" magnum hybrid differ. And of course the magnum is more expensive.

Luis,
Don't forget that the length of the gun may be more difficult to determine than you realize. Euroguns are measured by the length of the tube in front of the handle. Wood guns are typically measured by the length from tip to tip. A Riffe #3 standard is the same as a 105 cm eurogun, but it is listed as much longer. The Riffe website has the length of the band pull. This approximates the length of a eurogun. The best overall gun lengths for most divers, adn for most conditions is 100 to 110 cm. I've used them in visibility from 1.5 m to well over 30 m.
My personal preference is for Rob Allen Railguns. Cheap, sturdy, and very accurate.
