UK LIDL SELLING FISHING STUFF NEXT WEEK ....

Looks like the annual Lidl fish stuff is early this year. Cheapie no frill stuff but I know some of you take the chance to stock up on lures ;>)
Thanks for the tip off Pav. The rod back is still in regular use although the zips are all salted up (salty spearguns rather than rods probably).

I was given one of the big accessory sets last year. Great value and it is an adventure trying to figure out what to use and how. I am surprised how much of it I have managed to use or incorporate into rigs for this year. I have a stretch goal of using it all ...pretty difficult as there are a lot of tiny plugs, spoons & spinners for freshwater but I might give them a try this year. There are also loads of floats which I haven't used -- even as a coarse fisherman I probably only used 5 floats over several years, and could probably have managed with just 2! Could perhaps use them for harbour mullet (but who'd want to eat a mullet from the harbour?).

9.99 Waders!!
2.99 Polarised sunglasses:)
2.99 LED headlamp
5.99 tripod rod rest

OK, checked the fishing-Guernsey site and there is no mention of Turbot yet the record stands at 10KG (albeit in the 60s)... whats going on there then?
Does one have to go to Alderney for a big Turbot nowadays?

no menion yet but I would expect so soon. The real difference between Guernsey and Alderney for Turbot and the ther flats is really the travelling distance to the main sandbanks, Alderney is closer to the Schole but there are other banks close to Guernsey which throw up some very large fish from time to time. The other site to keep an eye on is AlderneyAngling.com Latest News Page, which, when mark remembers to update it will tell you what the visiting UK charter vessels catch.

Mark has reported some flats from the Alderney banks, see link above.

I've been ater bait again, Magpies dug up all of the razorfish and monkey do-dahs by the looks of it.

I applied for my quarying license and got to work on an impressive hold well down the tide, an area which isn't normally accessible but the 0.6m low was enough to get there, very wet but the worms were in the surface layers, biggest one I ever had today at about 18 inches long. nice :)

Also got a jelly chancre and 7 velvet peelers on Saturday so where are those bass then!! Come on......

Oh yeah, also found a baby flattie of some description. It's disguided on a rock in the pic. Think it's a topknot?? Sorry, poor pic from the mobile.

Probably not a baby Andy but yes a topknot, my brother once shot one that was about 3/4lb & he ate it!
I went to the Sark angling club weigh-in on sat night, it was won with a catch of 13 bream & a red mullet. There were over 100 caught but many undersized.

Rod

Hi, following on from earlier discussions, I noticed this Shimano 4oz rated rod and wondered what you guys thought of it

9 foot in length
Model Number FXS-90MHB-2
Durable and lightweight Aeroglass Construction

Comfortable EVA Handles

7 Rod rings

Graphite grey blank with black whippings with blue accents

Line weight 14-25lb

Lure weight 3/4oz - 4oz

Power Medium Heavy

Fast Action

A great all rounder rod this one

Great for lure spinning, pier fishing, beach spinning, bass, Mackerel and pike spinning

BTW Visited Abbotsbury & Chesil mid-week. There were mackeral around at Abbotsbury but it was surprisingly exposed to the current easterly winds (thought Chesil beach might provide shelter), so moved on to Chesil Cove, which was warm and pleasant. The new art deco loos are open & the ice cream bar is under construction (roof terrace?). Tried out the Heddon Saltwater spook - often casting all the line & backing off my reel (switched back to my big old Leeda reel & have since put new line line on the little reel), fun to use too. I tried the flattie rig again at Abbotsbury but mainly we cast feathers (when in Rome...). Even with 30g weights they cast real well, I bought some 2oz leads & 40g Tobies later to try out in the future as one of the locals told us there is ledge that you want to reach (he was casting 4oz).

Anglers always think there is a ledge to reach rofl
So many times my mates have told me about holes & ledges but when you dive the spot there is nothing!

Would be ok, but its fibreglass not carbon so would be a bit floppy and not very responsive. A bit short imho too.

roflI see what you mean Foxfish.

Fibre glass? I didn't see that Magpie. Bit crafty "graphite coloured blank", "composite" and "aeroglass" -- so all that means good old fibre glass! I didn't know that. Yes, I thought it might be a bit small. I'd be happy enough with a 9ft rod for spinning but for a general beach rod I was thinking 11-14ft would be more normal(?).

Been lovely weather over here lately and plenty of fishing been done. Mostly been bashing the trout with lure and fly but had a few trips out with the surf gear.

First decent weather was on the 6th and only lasted a day but I made it out to the entrance of the fjord which is a narrow bottleneck and only 12ish metres deep so fierce currents when the water is on the move but always a chance to ambush anything coming in or going out.
Looks like this:

The rod hardly stayed still the whole time with an absolute plague of dabs.
First of many:

Eventually something put a decent bend in the rod:

Was a nice little cod for the dinner :)
Which was followed by more and more Dabs:

A single cloud rolled by and dropped some hailstones for 2 whole minutes before clearing to a sunny blue sky again and i caught some more of...

these pests:

And this pest:

Evening drew on and the bites died down, nothing left but to sling a bait out and enjoy:

After work on friday I took a trip out to a deep water harbour some 30-40 mins drive away. The place is a bit on the industrial side and apart from the piles of wood, cranes and machinery that line the harbour the place is dominated by this huge bit of a platform:

I found a small clear spot on the front of the harbour to set up which was tricky to get to with all the gear which looked like this up close:

And this from a way back:

An amateurish overhead cast here puts you in some really deep water. I baited up a 6/O Owner AKI with a nice lump of mackarel on paternoster and lumped it out. Rod started jumping straight away but it was nothing that could manage the bait I'd put out. First thing I hooked was this pest:

I switched to a 3/O on a jelly worm paternoster and bagged myself a new species :) Norway Redfish:

After that there was grillin and drinks and the lovely evening gave way to an even lovelier night:

finished on just the one but I was chuffed :)

Yesterday was scorching as well and began with some lure fishing after trout result was 6 fish lost... incredible rofl
Trout buggered off on the tide and i went home for beer and dinner. Then in the evening I went out for a little ground fishing result was several Dabs, Whiting and this Haddock modelled by dopey:

Today I had a disasterous blanking episode in glorious weather where I lost a monster to a bust leader knot but I'm not bitter... plenty more fish in the sea :)

...Said a man on an island paradise :D
Grass is always greener eh? Nice days here are earned with cold winters and the country smells they are currently spraying on the fields rofl

That said... It never loses it's appeal to me... Sometimes I look at my pictures and think "wow, I live there". I'm sure it's the same in Guernsey :)

If you make it out here for fishing let me know and I'll see if i can sort you some guiding.

Which part of Norway you visiting and when? gonna be diving? fishing?

Viz has been crystal (12m) up til now... it will get soupy in the inland parts of the fjords as it warms up depending on run off from the hills and algal blooms etc. but open sea is usually always a good few metres.

I'm on a cruise so all over the place, I hope to get on a charter out of Bergen, it's one of the official excursions from the boat so almost guaranteed it won't leave without me...

After I don't know how many hours, finally, I have my first qualifier and yet again (unfortunately) it's also a contender for the smallest possible bass within club rules... 52cm and 3lb exactly.

Started with verm and had a good take early on but didn't connect. once it got a bit darker I decided to go for it and put my only lovely jelly velvet on. 30 seconds later, whack and it was away!! Fish on and actually fighting for a change compared to the other 8 or so bass i've had this year so far...

Then this appears in the torchlight and think it has to be close, and blimy wasn't it just.

What on earth is that weird look on my face???
