South Devon 2015

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
So after turning up at a "sheltered" spot (west facing S Hams Nr Plymouth) to find people body boarding and what looked like 0.5m viz... I thought it might be ok out a bit further.

Glad I did go in, once past the surf viz varied from 3-5m at around 5m deep and I took two Pollock. Nothing about around the string weed, the Pollock were hanging around the sandy areas. Didn't see much else apart from a huge Wrasse and a dead jellyfish.

Stayed in for 1.5hrs, and as I was getting out someone turned up on a Jetski, so good timing.

Razor clams... Now you're talking! Something I've never found!

Any viz today?

I hit a mark bigbury way Tuesday and no viz.. Pea soup...

Razor clams... Now you're talking! Something I've never found!
Once you know exactly what to look for there are tons of them , you have almost certainly swam over them and probably laid on top of them !! Terry...

For anyone wanting to join us in Guernsey for the 4th Annual DeeperBlue Meet, I have a spare space in my car. Jen (my fiancee) cant make it this year but I have already paid for her ticket.
I will be leaving Poole on Wed 29th morning and returning on Monday 3rd August, leaving Guernsey in the afternoon. If anyone wants to join me, let me know and I can change the name on the ticket and pick you up en-route from Plymouth or meet you at Poole.
You'll have to organise your own camping, but I can help with lifts to and from the dive sites for the comps on Sat and Sun.

I used to love posting on here but like you said Terry lots of negative comments and some horribly people who hide behind there keyboards. It didn't happen over night it took a while for it to die off. I remember taking time to do a nice dive report and get zero response from it. Someone would put a stupid bit up on say the same thread asking about "do you fart in your suit?"and a big discussion would kick off. It seemed dive reports were of no interest. I kept my post right so not to upset the echo spearos but still had remarks like "DONT YOU EVER WORK?". I like a easy stress free life so I avoid posting and the jealous remarks now. I had a few nice fish the last few weeks and posted them on FB. Right away spearos with more neck than Giraffes ask me or usually my mates I take with me where did you get that from. On here I just ignored them on FB i delete. I hope it do get back to normal on here. It used to be fun
Same for me I use to post on deeperblue but use to get lots of negative comment after posting picture of my catches DP is a spearfishing forum so why do we get the hater or the jealous type ? lots of the big boy spearo have move to FB at least there you know that the group of friend have are not going to slate you of give you abused and if they do you just delete them such a same as I use to love posting on DP like shiny1 and other but the abused we use to get was not worst the posting, let see if it do get back to a spearfishing forum for spearfishman if you slate a spearo because he got 6 -10-14 fish then you should not be on the forum

Crazywind .... nice to see you look in on this forum anyway.... perhaps if you posted a dive report of unusual specimens caught /seen or a particularly nice fish or join in on topics and not post too many big catches ( the limit of 3 bass now may help this ) I am sure the input would be welcomed by most ( especially vis reports for your area ).... also could not site moderators do something about those that seek to be unnecessarily critical / negative ( not in the spirit of things ) about perfectly legal and acceptable catches ? ......

Hi All, I am about to enter the world of spearfishing after a chance meeting with a Spearo in Cornwall. I spend a lot of time in East Devon near Seaton so keen to know if there are any good spots for a newbie to explore once I have completed my training... Any help or guidance greatly appreciated...

The result of a quick hours dive this evening. Dived East of Plymouth, two hours into the flood. Viz wasn't bad. The top metre had a bit of bit of murk, but cleared up about 4m down. Lots of ground swell out deeper so mostly stayed shallow.

Went out on the low tide yesterday evening. Used a small (tiny!) boat to check out a new spot with a friend. We also took a guy that has never been before, so I took this as an exploratory trip more than anything else. It was a nice spot in the South Hams, viz was a great 6-8m and I was diving some lovely sandy gullies and kelp covered rocks in about 5-3m of water. I really enjoyed the location. The evening was stunning, no wind and the swell was gentle.

Saw some very reasonable Pollock, plenty of schoolies and one really nice Bass. That Bass happened to come and check me out just as I reached the surface. I stayed pretty still, just floating there trying to call him in closer. It worked to an extent but he wasn't going to come up any higher. In hindsight I wish I had taken a shot but I slowly slowly swam away a small distance ensuring he was still there and tried to dive as smoothly and as quietly as I could. Yep, you guessed it, he f***ed off sharpish. Ah well. It was fun anyway.

I'm might try and hit the water again this evening.

Got in on Sunday ( S.Hams ) despite the weather !! rain and wind , found a sheltered spot with pretty good vis 5-6 metres , absolutely no silver fish seen at all and very few pollack and all small , but I was in a good area for shellfish and found one decent lobster but could not get it out of its hole !! , also found 2 smaller ones , one too small but kept the other ( about 1 1/2 - 2 lbs ) and a brown crab about 2 1/2 lbs , and a spider crab so a shellfish meal awaits !! found quite a few flatties , plaice and ray, but all too small , lots of razors in the same area as well . Spoke to a local fisherman and he says things are very scarce at the moment particularly no mackerel at all ... plenty of barrel jellyfish though ... Terry

Good work on finding vis Terry, I took a last minute decision to get in last night in Plymouth. Got out after 5 mins as vis was awful.

Nothing this way either. Babbacombe last week was like the med! Kicking myself for not getting in

I passed on a dive last Sat south hams way, wind chop was brutal and there was zero shelter where I intended. Anyone got any ideas about the lack of mackerel this year. Mackerel come in for the smaller bait fish - if they are not there then this will surely impact on the numbers of bigger predatory fish coming closer to shore?

Got in today in Torbay , calm warm and predictably murky water ( 2-3 metres) was looking for an offshore mark , just for the sake of exploration and a couple of guys fishing in a boat guessed what I was looking for and guided me with their GPS right on to the spot .... nice chaps !!... had a look around , many sponges and various small creatures but no fish at all , moved to a few other spots ,and with such poor vis decided to go looking for shellfish , and found a nice crab 2-3lbs and towards the end of my session at another spot found half a dozen scallops ( will be back for a more serious look some time ) ...I seem to bringing home things to eat without firing my speargun nowadays !!! ... anyone else getting any fish at the moment ? Terry ..

Great catch Terry. I've not been in for the past few days as the car is off the road awaiting repairs, but I shall be back with a vengeance soon.

Slight NE blowing and teignmouth looking a little choppy, might drive down and check it out. Let you know if I dive

Nice catch Terry.
Have got the gear in the car ready for a dive after work tomorrow. Not sure where to go yet but likely to try a South Hams spot.

SW clearing teignmouth nicely until slight NE decided to show up late afternoon. This was just enough to stir things up, viz was a murky 2m in places with patches of 0 viz.
A few bass taken nothing special, masses of red mullet and a few gurnards and cuttle fish but none I could bother with. Felt quite queasy towards the end and Swell had picked up.
