South Devon 2015

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Great report. This site is missing reports like that as people have been forced to take to facebook. Well done mate.

Well done great report and nice catches Alistair B , More often than not clear water and calm seas with good weather means few fish ( in my experience anyway ) but it is great to be out and about on / in the sea ! Scrumpy why have people been " forced " to FB ? .... Terry ..

Lots of negative complaints about too many fish taken or shown. I can see both sides but what's more interesting ? Reading about someone moaning about fish taken or an uneventful dive or seeing speared fish on a spearfishing forum. I didn't dive for 6 Months I'm hardly hitting fish stocks, when commerical boats etc are out everyday. Personally I like deeper blue as it is where I picked up advice and the desire to hunt fish after reading archive posts through the winter months. Spearolee rarely posts now, but I know he's had some cracking fish already this year. I've spoken many a time to him about his dives with the odd 4-6 hour dive + hours travelling as he lives no where near the coast. Then to post on here or dorset and get bombarded with negative comments.
As I've said I want to see posts on here about fish taken or even just a good report, hopefully like I have posted over the last few years.

Further more the south devon forum is 7 pages down on last year already. Enough said!!!

It is a shame as the 3 bass a day legal limit would of probably stopped any further negative comments.
I guesse we all wish the forum would return to it former glory days but this situation is not unique to deeper blue as virtually all forums have quietened down or even closed up in the last few years!
However facbook has its own issues & maybe things will revert back to the good old days in time....

Just back from a great week at Bigbury, mostly getting married but snuck off for a little bit of spearfishing yesterday. Saw one small bass, lots of juvenile red mullet and pollock but also took one pollock for a new PB 4lb 7oz and nearly had my first brown crab.

Having a mooch in the gullies I saw a pile of crab body parts which looked promising, sure enough found a nice crab holed up. Tried to sneak him out with my spear but he slipped past and hid away.

Any top tips for crab extraction?

Weren't most of the 'reports' something like "where are the fish?" ;)

Personally I pretty much just use this thread as it's useful for viz reports in the local area etc. I haven't seen much negativity within the thread but I guess you're talking about other threads on the forum?

I'll probably continue to post viz reports here. I normally add a few sentences to say how the dive went. I like hearing how a dive went, good, bad, fish or no fish. Is there an etiquette I'm missing? Are we only supposed to post if you catch?

took one pollock for a new PB 4lb 7oz
Well done and congratulations on the marriage! :)

No. just stick up reports like you have done. Dorset 2014 forum was dogged with moaners.

Hi,

Second post on this forum, but thought a viz update on recent dives might be useful:

Last Monday/Tuesday (15th/16th) In-between Teignmouth/Torquay: viz 3-4m, lots of small fish, big shoal of small mullet, a couple of medium sized Pollock. Two huge 'dustbin lid' jellyfish seen. Nothing taken.

Last Friday (19th) Plymouth: viz 6-8m (fantastic!), lots of small/medium Pollock, friend saw an undersized Bass. Medium Pollock taken.

Monday (22nd) Torquay: viz 3m ish, a couple of small Pollock, not much else, water quite milky. Nothing taken.

Will be heading Plymouth way again next dive, it seems to be consistently good (on past experience).

Blimey , lots of posts today ... good to see some unfamiliar / new names on here as well WELCOME and do not be afraid to post or ask silly questions ( except where are the best spots !!ha ha )........ Scrumpy ( Lee ) is the Spearolee controversy the reason why many stopped posting ?? I was not aware of this , I know he liked to boast a bit ( I mean that in a nice way !) and he had some great catches , the night diving also divided opinion ( I know what side you are on !!.. lol ) It was also questionable if it was all for personal consumption as well , the most prolific moaners /critics were ones ( artiz ? in particular ) that never contributed anything anyway !! and neither in the forum Devon / Dorset area either , I am surprised any one let that worry them especially Spearolee ! .. This forum is good for many things , viz reports , catch reports etc and general banter , and considering the amount of gear that gets sold ( venture sports among the leading outlets ) there must be plenty of spearos out there ,perhaps they read this but never post , but I rarely see any out when I go out .... especially yesterday as I was at an offshore mark when a very thick fog / mist rapidly descended and I could not see land in any direction which was a bit disconcerting for a while , the vis was not great underwater either and no fish about but took 1 nice crab and 4-5 kilos of razor clams as well ... no fish but a great day out .....Terry

Can you give a viz update if you go. Might go tomorrow night but didnt really fancy diving on a low.

Last week I took every opportunity to get in the water which meant fitting in 5 (I think) dives around work and family life. Mixture of South Hams and Torquay, with South Hams throwing up the best vis. On the whole not much seen apart from larger numbers of Pollock around and quite a few undersized bass. Was joined by 3 seals over 2 different locations which was pleasant - much more so with better vis rather than them suddenly appearing through the gloom!! Came away with 3 decent mullet and 2 above average Pollock. Expected a better haul for the effort but good fun and exercise nonetheless. The thing that baffles me the most is why the wife has been so patient with me leaving at 5am and getting back at 11pm on various days?

Am not on Facebook so I'm sticking put with DB, in fact I'm going to renew my site support with it. Have learnt loads from the threads and various people - which coupled with putting it all into practice over the years with somewhat obsessive dedication has paid off and we eat well.

Terry - hope you're still up for a jaunt?

Scrumpy ... I wuz in today ... start point ( ish ) viz pretty good 5-6 metres from low to high tide , feeling much warmer now as well ....Found quite a few plaice , mostly on the small side so left them , a few larger ones were on stony ground so did not want to fire my gun and when I tried to stab them they shot off just before contact ( am now adapting smaller gun and spear for this purpose ) Saw another larger one also on stony ground so I picked up a small rock , then from a bout 2 metres above it I dropped it intending to spook it up off the bottom so I could shoot it ..... It did not work .... it shot off sideways just before the rock landed near him ... thought the theory was good anyway !!... Took three biggish spider crabs , found some brown crabs and a lobster but a bit on the small side .. so left to grow on a bit .. lots of scallop shells in one spot and lots of razors as well so a useful exploration and I shall return again on a lower tide ... Dai ... yes happy to meet up some time get in touch I have plenty of opportunity to get out .. Foxfish .. thanks and am happy to do so .... I often look at your " my guns " page and have shown a few other fine woodworkers who are very impressed indeed , totally unique ........ Terry ..

I used to love posting on here but like you said Terry lots of negative comments and some horribly people who hide behind there keyboards. It didn't happen over night it took a while for it to die off. I remember taking time to do a nice dive report and get zero response from it. Someone would put a stupid bit up on say the same thread asking about "do you fart in your suit?"and a big discussion would kick off. It seemed dive reports were of no interest. I kept my post right so not to upset the echo spearos but still had remarks like "DONT YOU EVER WORK?". I like a easy stress free life so I avoid posting and the jealous remarks now. I had a few nice fish the last few weeks and posted them on FB. Right away spearos with more neck than Giraffes ask me or usually my mates I take with me where did you get that from. On here I just ignored them on FB i delete. I hope it do get back to normal on here. It used to be fun

Good to see you still look in on us amateurs Shiny !! ha ha ... Go on post something to give us something to aspire to , it was amazing to see things like an Almaco jack ? or 2 triggers in 1 shot!! etc For every negative response , or lack of response I am sure there was plenty smiling and shaking their heads in disbelief at some posts and vowed to get better gear , improve their breatholding , dive more ...... before going down to pub to tell others about what was posted !! Post under a different name to avoid negative feedback ......something like ......mirror !! ha ha ....
