South Devon 2015

It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I crawled out of my bed for an early dive before work today. The tide was dropping, there was no wind and the sun came out, so two out of three ain't bad.
The viz was 2m in the shallows amongst the string weed, and just 6m out deeper. I took the first and only bass within five minutes of getting in, and found a lobster walking along the edge of the reef about an hour later.

Got in last night at my crystal clear spot babbacombe !! Unfortunately it wasn't anymore.
3 dire dives this week, so much so it's to painful to talk about.
Guinness and rugby is helping me through a painful week.
Shame to hear your not getting some good dives in ! I know it is a pain driving to better spots ( S . Hams ) but it is usually more productive and / or enjoyable ... vis in the bay is rarely good , and easterlies are due over the next few days so it will only get worse ... I will be in a few times over the next 3-4 days just not sure where yet though !!

Hopefully can get in the water in the next few weeks after 6 weeks off as to a ruptchured ear drum shams

Got in today in Torbay .... and the vis was good 5 metres ( good by the bay standards anyway !) .... bag limit on scallops (15 ) and crabs (3) taken ... no fish taken , only a few mullet and 1 plaice seen ... explored a few new areas ... lovely weather and conditions ( although getting choppy in easterlies by end of day ).... happy days ..

We took a kayak trip around Plymouth Sound on Saturday, diving all kinds of ground, deep, shallow, sand and reef that we cant normally get to by foot. We went out on a low tide and headed out to some deep reefs for some pollock, but none were around. We kept in shallow to some of the more remote string weed beds and reefs. We took two bass each, and one mullet. I lost a bass as the spear just hit just behind his dorsal fin, under the smallest bit of skin. I tried to grab him and he ripped off. Vis was brilliant out deep, as we could see the bottom 11m down. in close it was 5m ish,
Highlight of the day- I was laying in the bottom of a gully amongst the kelp, looking up for bass swimming over head, and something blue caught my eye nudging through the weed inches below me. I looked down just in time to see an 80lb+ conger eel disappearing under me and through my legs.

Trelawney, must have been you I bumped into in the water. It was my first time out in the Plymouth area and a pleasant spot to dive. Saw plenty of life, but nearly all too small to take. Less activity further out.
Only managed to come away with a small pollack and a cuttlefish.
Now back at uni in Plymouth so maybe see you out again!

Got in again yesterday , slight misjudgment of wind direction by myself and found conditions worse than I hoped for , started off not too bad and got these 2 in quick succession , ( both about 3lb ) both were long shots and I was lucky (or good ) depending on opinion , saw a few more before the wind increased considerably making it choppy and bringing vis down to about 2 metres so had to cut the day short , happy enough though !

Managed to get a surprise dive in S.Hams yesterday. Dived a wreck at low tide that was covered in wrasse - some of them were huge! Vis was patchy, mostly around 6m, 3m-8m all over. I finally managed to get one of the school bass that have been teasing me. I found playing dead to be the most effective method. Head down and still, only watching out of the corer of my eye brought them right in close. I just watched the space in front of my spear until there was a decent size and then wham! Woohoo! Has me wondering if a reflective mask would help?? Also caught a nice golden grey and two pollack. All four fish were ~45cm. I missed another golden grey that swam right up to me whilst I was on the surface. I definitely have a tendency to snatch at the trigger when I get excited - gonna have to watch that...
I bumped into two other spearos close to the wreck - Hi if it's anyone on here!

Whilst looking for information on how big pollack need to get before they are of breeding age I came across this site: http://www.anglingtrust.net/page.asp?section=163# I'm not sure how up to date it is, but it shows minimum landing sizes next to the size of sexual maturity. You would like to think they would be the same, but according to the angling trust they are quite different!

A quick hours dive yesterday evening for two members of Team CRAP Spearfishing Club. Viz wasn't as good as yesterday, maybe 3m. Lots of fish about, mostly pollock and school bass, although there were some bigger fish staying just out of gun range. We took three bass in total, all about 2-3lb. Not massive, but ideal for dinner.

Cameras looking good for viz thurlestonne way, note above comment.
Any further updates appreciated. Winds staying easterly so should stay settled, hopefully for a dive Wednesday or Friday.

i wont hit the water to 22:30+ as work etc. If you get in can you let me know viz as it's a fair old way after 10hour shift.

cheers

I was in today ( S Hams ) vis was good 5-8 metres, saw quite a few bass but it appeared they were all on a mission to get somewhere ,swimming straight and fast ,no chance of a shot , then around low it went very quiet ..... managed to get a mullet about 2 lb , and very little else seen . Explored some new ground off shore at low ( very low ) tide but it was not really very interesting after all . Really hard work paddling back to launch point in kayak in the ever strengthening easterlies .... 20 - 30 mph ...

cheers lads.

Alastair can you let me know as viz shouldnt change much over next day or so. I'll probably look similar area.

Terry were you also nearby?

Surprised to hear Thurlestone had iffy viz ?

The web cam at Prawle point doesnt look to bad, but might be a bit of a risk around salcombe / lannacombe ?
