Lee - was just getting out of the water in that area as you typed your last post.
Vis was generally very good but changeable - very good in the shallows and could also generally see the bottom in about 5-6 meters. Deeper out got a bit more milky and vis reduced slightly but still ok and well worth a dive. Bit of movement in the water pushing out to sea but not too strong. Went to explore a different part of the area and took quite a long swim out into deeper water in hunt of larger Pollock. Did most diving in 10 - 12 meters but not much around. Came away with an ok Pollock at 45 - 50cm, but was hoping for bigger given the effort made!! In shallower dives of 5 - 7 meters didn't see much around at all - 3 meters from the shore were the only bass seen but on the edge of vis and appeared to be too small.
My buddy saw another spearo heading out I assume with a torch or things would get very difficult very quickly at that time!
If I were you - go!!!!!

i wont hit the water to 22:30+ as work etc. If you get in can you let me know viz as it's a fair old way after 10hour shift.

Fair play, that's dedication! I have trouble convincing myself it's worth the 10min drive to Dawlish Warren after a shift in work!

I probably won't get back until around 10pm, will post then.

I'm also surprised to hear of bad vis, it was ok on Sunday.

Good news on the suit.
Thanks for updates guys.
Funny place never seen big bass there. Might recheck tides and look to dive river mouth and bantham side, just need to sus rip currents at night. Shouldn't be any bother!!
Friday looking better for that type of dive.
What could possibly go wrong.

Bentham side good for mullet, the rips are quite strong just swim to the river mouth and there's a push on counteracting the rip you can use. Again never seen any big bass there, only schoolies, good luck!

Watch out for illegal netters at night there.

Cheers guys. On a shift from hell so thinking of putting off til Friday.

Vis was ok yesterday mostly 6-7m. I went out at low first, didn't see much of size, but I did swim through a large school of sprat. This got my hopes up that something bigger would be after them, so I hid in a big kelp bush and waited and waited. Nothing. Swimming back against the wind was pretty uncomfortable.
Back in just before mid tide, and found some mullet in the shallows. One grey on the stringer soon followed by a golden grey. I saw a few other small mullet but nothing much else. Over an hour and a half ish.
Back in again around dusk. Restricted to the northern end of the beach by anglers. Lots of school bass 100+ but none bigger than ~30cm. They all came right into the shallows (50cm deep) as it got darker. I found a corner full of smelt, and bass, with shit vis but a few tidy fish. I took one barely legal bass and decided to leave the rest to it. Soon after I noticed mullet feeding on the surface, most were tiny (and very cute!) but eventually found a good one.
I gave the beach in front of the golf course a go. It wasn't as fishy, but I did get my first garfish and missed the first big squid (25cm) I've seen. Spent ages looking for more (I love squid) with none found.

I didn't see any of the usual night fish - pouting, small squid, and red mullet. I normally see lots of them. No shore crab either. Is this maybe why there are no bigger bass there?

What is the recipe plan for the gar, I saw lots on my last trip but couldn't decide what I'd do with one.

I just had it for dinner. Grilled on high temp roughly 3-4 min each side. Tasted like mackerel but no where near as oily. Lots of bones (they are green!) but they are pretty soft. I ate a lot of the 'V' bones. If I get another I'll split it into a butterfly, rub with spices and fry to a crisp. Should make the bones a bit more edible. I'd take another given the chance.
Had it with a mediterenean style potoato-vegetable-whatwasinthekitchen bake type thing.

Mmm. Remember green bones as a kid. Not for me but hats off for trying.
:):)

A lot of deep diving this afternoon searching for Plaice. After climbing down the cliff and getting my kit sorted at the waters edge, a wave came in and washed me into the rock I was sat on. No problem usually, but this time my wickedly sharp stringer got in the way, and two inches of steel stabbed me in the top of my thigh. The wound looks small, but it's deep and is aching like a bastard. Moral of the story is, be careful out there. Accidents can happen out of the blue, usually when you don't expect it, normally when you're somewhere remote and unable to call for help.
On the plus side, I carried on with the dive, met Shiny 1 who was out on his boat. He put me on a good mark for future reference. Only took one plaice as my leg was throbbing really bad after an hour. Then I had to climb back up the cliff to the car!

Sounds out of order 'liking' a post in which you've showed us an injury - but you know what I mean!!

Fair play for cracking on and still getting a fish and serves as a reminder to the rest of us how easily an accident can happen. The sea's a cruel mistress etc.......

Looks a bit nasty , guess you now know how the fish feel ( when speared ) I am confident enough to go in the water without a stringer ! ( actually I normally have my kayak nearby ) and will not take a stringer if out in my inflatable boat .

If I didn't have my stringer, I would have nowhere to hang my fish. I like to anchor my float and dive around it, and its annoying having to swim back all the time.
