South Devon 2015

Nice one Terry, am trying a South Hams spot after work tomorrow to fish the high tide. Haven't seen any bass this year yet but bagged a couple of decent mullet last week.

Can you give a viz update later please mate. Teignmouth to maidencombe no good

I went in today (south hams way), first dive of the year. Took the kayak out at low tide to explore some marks I've been eyeing up. I had a great time pottering about. Viz varied from 4-8 meters and much like Terry mentioned a few days back loads of bait fish, jellyfish around. Few lonely small pollock and the only silver fish I saw is when I was moving my kayak anchor by hand and didn't have my gun on me! Typical. Nice to sea all the seaweed that got battered a while ago doing well again. Wind picked up towards the end of the afternoon and the current certainly picked up as the tide changed, which made things that little bit more hard work. I'll probably try somewhere over in Start Bay tomorrow evening as a friend wants to go out.

I had the same experience in the same area yesterday, lovely conditions but no silvers, just thousands of bait fish.
In again early tomorrow morning somewhere in Torquay probably.

Went in this evening at Start Bay. Vis not so good that side of Start Point, 2-3m. Really didn't have much time in the water because my friend realised upon getting out the car, he'd not brought his mask, snorkel or weight belt! :banghead:

I got in had a little look around and a couple of dives but only saw pollock and wrasse before letting my friend in with my gear for the last of the light. Very milky, lots of sediment. If I were to dive round here I'd go somewhere that gets a good flushing on the tides.

Tried diving at Maidencombe today. <2m vis. Saw nothing but the odd school of bait fish. Stayed in for about 30 min then gave up.
It's been shit vis the last few times I've been out. Frustrating.
Might try Babbacombe / Torquay tomorrow.

Was going to ask for a vis report of this area .. thanks for the info .... sorry you did not have a good dive , but this is typical for the area and Babbacombe will be much the same I suspect ... Terry ...

Dived Torquay first thing this morning, not great vis 2-3 meters tops. Nothing around apart from one mullet which ended up on the dinner plate this evening.

Haven't seen good viz at maidencombe for a while. Teignmouth had good 4-5m but dropped right off. Calm morning so things hopefully improved.

Went diving from Teignmouth today. About an hour before low tide vis was a hazy 2-3m. By an hour or so after low vis reduced to 1-2m. I saw one large-ish bass/mullet shape but it vanished pretty quickly. I'm going to try the high tide tomorrow morning.

Was going tonight but breezy here and sea looking slightly coloured, I'll try over weekend from somewhere

Dived S.Hams today vis milky for the first metre or so and got worse as the tide came in but lots of mullet and bass around.

Dived the S.Hams on Saturday, east of Start Bay (seems a bit clearer in that direction at the moment). Took the kayak out on the morning high tide to explore some more. Bit of wind chop but it calmed down slightly after midday. The area I wanted to dive (new to me) turned out to be where a bunch of seals where hanging out. They followed me around for a while so I decided not to dive there! I did 3 short dives and only saw 2 Bass in the afternoon. The bigger of which I had for dinner on the BBQ later that evening with some friends. That was my first shot at a fish this season. I'm taking that as a good omen! :)

Vis around 4-6m, clearer in parts especially where a little deeper. I was mainly about 50-70m offshore from the low tide mark. Shallow dives to the easily accessible kelp beds. I was just poking around some gullies checking out some new hunting grounds.

Good to see someone else using a kayak , I have a small RIB but use the kayak more often , well done on the fish !!

Got in last night around 11:15pm. Although it's always the goal to get a fish, with the conditions as they are, I wanted to take the opportunity to practice technique for night diving. I know I still have a fair bit to learn/experience and I'd also like to suss out my own good night marks (gotta put in the time!).

I didn't take anything, however I did see 3-4 undersized Bass (much closer in that I imagined they would be) and I got to watch some cuttlefish etc.

Viz was pretty good at around 3-4m (bit harder to tell at night), tad milky in places. Hardly any wind and the high tide that was starting to slacken which meant it was quite a peaceful dive. This was good as I still haven't gotten completely comfortable in the water at night! You go from feeling pretty badass (getting ready and heading down to the water) to "what the f*** am I doing?" (once in the water) pretty quickly ;) That feeling did improve slightly once I realised I hadn't turned my torch up to full beam. durp.

had a quick look this afternoon at Babbacombe and the vis is looking pretty good 4-5 metres , which is about as good as it gets around here !! I will be in somewhere not too far away tomorrow .... Terry...
