Went to Meadfoot yesterday 10am so it was a fairly low tide. Watched the coast guard training with a helicopter ( at least I hope they were training) for 5 minutes and then got in the water . I had nailed a 3 pound pollock which landed up in my oven for a late lunch. swam around the front of the beach where the beach huts are, a few bass and some nice size mullett, the last mullet i caught did not go down well so im leaveing them for now. swam around the rocks to find nothing so gave up . I havent been in the water for about 2 weeks prior and noticed that the temp has dropped. My buddy got out after about an hour so I gave up and joined him.

going to develop a few pictures ive taken on the last few hunting trips so with a bit of luck will have a few to post and then off for a few much deserved beers :friday
.

Dived ansteys cove today. viz 4 meters total catch 4 pollock 1 mullet. There seems to be more fish starting to enter the cove and the pollock seem to be geting bigger some on the 4 lb mark also lots of mullet begining to show.Had a look for flatfish but i just cant see them there probly laying there laughing as i go over them. Ansteys cove is also getting busy with tourists due to a cafe that has opened down there so its full of tourist. Going to try again tomorow.

It's a really bad idea to steal from pots, i'm glad you realise that but we should all try and stamp this out whenever we see it. Apart from the fact that it is stealing from someones livelihood, crabbers might associate anyone freediving in their area as a potential thief and take matters into their own hands. Lastly, but not least, someone like that might save your life one day if you get into problems. Respect other people who use the sea like you do. Better luck with the bass next time!!

My weights are yellow but it doesnt mater the fish dont care. I have Only dived meafoot once but you have to swim a long distance to get deep water as you can stang up even when you are a few hundred yards out. I cant remeber what that rock is called down there but if you can get to it there are massive bass their the divers have reported some that are up to 12lbs in big shouls and big pollock. I would nt want to swim out that far without a buddy.
Whatch out for gill nets down there there are a some down their also what gun is that you are holding looks a bit small.

Totally agree. I thought that it was just a myth spread by fishermen that divers take from their pots.

The day I pulled out 3 large spiders a guy on the beach with his kids asked to see the crabs & ask if I had taken them from pots. I explained there was no need because (at least on that day) I had seen perhaps 50 or more decent size spiders & just picked the 3 biggest. I would think it would be a major hassle to try and get them out of a pot - it's hard enough just getting them into a bag.

Actually, do UK crabbers keep spider crabs? I saw a program recently (perhaps R. Stein on John Betchemen's Cornwall on Sunday?) that suggested that spiders are/were not generally eaten, except in the Channel Islands/Guernsey (but taste good) and that Cornish fishermen (used to?) consider them a nuisance.

ScottWilson, that yellow belt provides excellent camoflage against the double yellow lines behind you in the picture!
(Must be why traffic wardens where black with a yellow stripe around their hats). You could always try camo'ing it or drabbing it down - Foxfish is the expert on camo. I wouldn't worry about it too much (have you got any of that Bat Shark-Repellant spray in your utility belt? Sorry...I'm a bad man ).

its a 65 cressi sub , its not bad but I find the rubbers a bit weak ( at least thats me excuse ) Ive often thought about spearing around that rock Spearheads but I have heard strong currents surround it and it's always put me off, I might muster the courage up and get a kayak and try it out , Some nice big bass will do me just fine.

Even if we get angry about the crab potters and gill netters:head we should nt steal:naughty from them and if you ever got caught red handed:rcard stealing you might get run over. scottwilson do watch out for the current around the rock (I think its called shag rock). If you do go to the rock go at low tide and as the tide rises you can dive without worrying abought getting washed out to sea and before the tide drops againg swim back to shore fastrofl. I think i might try it at the weekend but going oddicome beach tommorrow for bass

Bought myself a kayak scrambler xt on Thursday night , I love it , took it to brixham today to try getting on and off of it with all me gear , took a few trys but I figured it out , paddled around to the swimming pool to see if the water was any clearer there but it was like pea soup, I did see a few nice sized mullet swimming around at about 2 meters but the viz was that bad i gave up and just paddled about.

Dived Budders tonight 6pm on the rising tide. Crud vis 3-4m with a bit of a swell that almost made me chuck up after 40 - 50 mins :yack .

A couple of pollack spotted but not much else could be made out in the moving weed. The wind is picking up tomorrow so its going to be even worse.

I tried cable tying my 5w Beaver light onto the gun (following some earlier forum discussion) which seems ok, but I haven't tried firing it, to see if things get tangled up. It does need to get in close to light things up. Perhaps it might be better on a gloomy day...

On a seperate note I went to Pentewan, St Austell a couple of weeks ago spearing and with a little crayfish trap I got for a few quid off e-bay. These things work a treat and I was catching edible crabs in it as well as a few other varieties. Not much in the way of fish however! A bit chilly as well with a shorty on.

Dived Hope Cove on Saturday am. Only one bass but the best of the year so far, about 4lb or so. Pic when I can get a moment.

Dived Anstey's Cove Tqy on Sunday at high tide. Lovelly sunny day and reasonable sheltered from the wind (crap its winter already). Viz was 3m. Not great but certainly do-able.

No fish in the Cove but did find some bass in Hope Cove when I swam around there. The usual 5 minutes of excitement (no rude jokes please) as a shoal of 20 or so bass and mullet buzzed me while stalking in the string weed. Probably got three shots off but hit none:head

I got rather sea sick when two waterski boats started doing figure 8s in the bay, one coming within 15m of me consistently, what with the chop they made in an otherwise flat sea:yack After that I headed in.

I exercised restraint as there were kids on the boat but after a while I had to give them 'the bird' and they eventually got the message and f'd off. Torquay is a rather vibrant place sometimes. Last trip to Hopes Nose, some scousers who were camped on the Nose for some fishing busied themselves going through my bag on the beach (which I hadn't left anything valuable in) while I was diving (I saw them). They just left my clothes etc strewn on the beach. I might have been more angry if it was raining and they had got wet (and if they didn't outnumber me 5 to 1!). One of them even had the cheek to aks me if I caught anything! Tossers.

Weather looks likely to settle a bit so hope to get wet soon again.

jez the water has cleared up been fishing all day as im in the torbay fishing festival. Going to try spearfishing tommorow at oddicombe as the weather is looking good and i want to get one more dive in as im back to school:head on wednesday. Also wow you swam to hopes nose from ansteys cove thats a long way

Asked if you caught anything? Yeah, them red handed!

What the hell is wrong with people these days? You have to search hard for a bit of common courtesy (grumpy old man today)...

Right, here goes. Hope this photo works, been trying for ages to find a way of resizing them without using a .zip file as some people can't see them depending on the state of your pc (like mine at work!).

Probably my best bass this season so far taken Bank Holiday weekend in Torquay. Shot through the spine, instant death, how it should be.

Spearheads, we must go dive sometime soon, if your in school locally let me know when your free (I'm a 9 to 5er anyway). Yes, it is a long swim butn o biggy if you've got a few hours spare and aren't in a hurry, never any real currents to worry about.
