I'm in tomorrow probably Budleigh though, any good or i might be able ask permission from she who must be obeyed to venture out.

Re. game, not much he could do about if he saw it and thought it was a bass (vis. has been poor lately). Not sure how the law would operate in this case, as there was clearly no intent (action first, justice maybe seems to be the way they often operate these days).

Re; the Salmon

Once it was shot it would be a crime in my eye's to waste such a creature. Put in your bag or at the bottom of your catch and don't mention it, just don't make a habit of it.
Accidents happen!

Hi Mr. X, how is the kayak diving going?? I am looking to set up a kayak for the start of next season and may need to question you on your set up! Fed up with shore diving and i have loads of GPS for offshore reef which i intend to dive. I use to blow bubbles on them years before i saw the light and started to freedive/spearfish.

If you're still online, 5 or 6pm at Budleigh Lime kiln carpark by the ticket machine, let me know which.

Tribs.

Burrp! Sorry just finished eating my bass from last night.

Am toying with going to Budleigh tomorrow after work. Feeling quite lazy though so won't decide until the am. I might feel more perky tomorrow and throw my gear in the car before going to work. Will be at the river end car park about 5pm if I'm there chaps. Sorry I can't be more promising, last minute dot com was made for people like me!

Beer Festival this weekend at Newton Abbot Racecourse, not as good as the festival at Tuckers Maltings but worth a look if you're around. Its a CAMRA festival so good beer guaranteed.:friday

Was thinking of going to Thurlstone early Sat morning so I can get back to watch the rugby in the pm. Are there any fish left after the comp???

Jez,

I'll be there around 5ish then just in case you can make it and GeeBee, if you're about, come along!

Decided I wanted a short drive today so went to Sidmouth. Viz was variable from 1-5m. Had quite a few glimpses of very fast but quite big bass - far too fast for me to shoot. Bagged a reasonable mullet but spent most of my time trying out a new camera housing I have just bought on ebay.

Went out with Tribs today at Budleigh. Viz was great compared to Torbay in recent weeks but the salt/fresh water mix made things interesting.

Fantastic weather, flat calm, a few mullet around and Tribs got one for dinner.

Thanks Tribs for letting me tag along!

Pictures and video below...love the camouflage...maybe the weights need some paint :)

I cut the yellow plastic off my weights last year. It takes a while but makes them look a bit more "spearo".
I can't honestly say that the fish seem to have noticed the difference though! In fact I've been wondering whether being all in black now makes me look more like a threatening seal and less like a comic creature worth coming to investigate :t

GeeBee

That video is great and you are most welcome to come anytime. If you come this way sunday give me a bell and i'll pop down!

RE: The weights, spray paint is the answer i think- keeps the lead sealed in and still will be camo-thats what i'm going to try.

PS Spiderman where abouts is that in Sidmouth as i didn't know it had any deep water like that at all with heavy kelp?

You're right there is not a lot of kelp at Sidmouth, but there is some close to the outer breakwater. It's only about 6m deep at the most and the pollack that live in it are never big enough to shoot, but it holds the occasional bass and it's the closest bit of sea to where I live. :)

When you go to Sidmouth where do you park? Jacob's ladder going up the hill?

There or Manor Road car park.

It usually provides some interest to the elderly masses watching me trying to get in and out of my wetsuit :t

Dived a new spot today somewhere between Start Point and Prawle point at the arse end of South Hams today. Lovely sunny day, light offshores, viz 3-8m depending on how far out your were.

This is serious bass turf. Lots of kelp, deep rocky gullies, sandy patches, string weed all over the shop. Saw a bunch of school bass straight off the beach as soon as I reached some weed. They hung around for ages but nothing big enough showed up.

Moved on to the west. Hoped to see some flatties as there were worm casts on every patch of sand/mud. None seen though.

40 mins later found a lone large bass (the small one in the photo!). Missed him twice due to surface chop bobbing me about and short on range for the 2nd shot. Dived down to the bottom and clung on (2m depth). Three large bass came back and took my first.

1hr20 later found the second biggest bass. He came in at an awkward angle and I ended up taking the shot to my 6 o'clock just before he swam off. Gut shot and he went nuts, couldn't grab him so I legged it up onto a rock and bashed his brain with the butt of my knife. Ice cold.

10mins later I missed a sitter, about the same size 4-5lb. Doh!

Tried to plug a monster mullet 5 mins later for the cat's dinner but missed. Sorry pet!

20mins later I was cruising over 3m depth with 2m high string weed. I approached a drop off and saw the mother of all bass lurking over the edge just behind the weed. I stopped flipping and lined up, the damn chop was aiming my gun high but I finally got it lined up good enough, making sure I didn't miss like earlier. A little low with the shot so I had to get it on the rocks again as it was going wild. I couldn't grip it hard and get my knife under its gills to finish it so I bashed its head like before. I prefer shooting fish on or just behind the gills, above the spine, they never escape then.

Flipped my way back to the beach and made it back in time for the rugby.:)

The bass are all about 5-10cm longer than shown in the photo as they are sitting in roasting dishes with heads and tails curved upwards (didn't want slime all over the place!).
