South Devon report 2007

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
So I've had enough about the comps - Tribs - how is Budleigh looking at the mo? Have you been in recently?

Hi James

Budleigh is getting better day by day as the wind is coming around northerly! Probably going in today or tomorrow as saturday its all change from what I gather, going SW. Isn't it nice to talk about spearfishing again! Lots of relevant points but blimey lets not get too emotional.

If you're about James, buzz back and we'll hit Budders on mass. Took GeeBee out as a newbie and he was impressed until his next dive in the Maldives!!!!!!!

Anglers have tried catch and release (which works in freshwater) bur not so successful with sea fish and definitely not much use to spearo's.

Irrelevant as it is to spearing... Catch and release works just fine in salt water angling with the exception of deepwater species with blown swim bladders (tho there are ways).
I have returned specimens of every species I've ever caught succesfully.

Scott bigbury has 3/4mtrs vis at the moment but be quick theres a SW comming

Good SW wind for a change.
BTW anyone buying gear online i wouldn't recommend subprof took them over 3 weeks for my order to arrive. Took them a week to ship my order.
They also not like replying to emails. Had to ring ABX in the end to get my parcel delivered.

Hi all

Has anyone heard of or indeed use or recommend a device called a 'crab' for loading spearguns? Just bought a Gabbi 90 and although i'm not lacking in strength there is obviously a knack to loading them and this little device looks like it could ease matters by allowing me to apply more muscle than technique!

Thanks for the heads up dave will try for Saturday if the weather holds out

spearheads I know what you mean I ordered my suit from subprof at the beginning of the month and got it today. I ordered my cressi garas last week and it got shipped today so will only get them next week which sux as I now have to use my backup pair which are w@nk

Tribs I have the cressi comanche 90 which I found a bit hard to load due the length of the gun and shortness of the rubber ( or its my short fingers) to start off with but you soon get the knack of it

I rest the gun on my chest and stretch with my right arm and grab the rubber. as I pull the rubber down I take the slack with my left arm and pull . I tend to do it one motion instead of stopping half way thru. I still havent mastered unloading the gun but have only need to do it a few times.

8cm? you must be a midget..roflrofl

If you find it difficult to load on your chest try loading it on the buckle of your belt.
Its really not about strength although it helps with 20mm bands:).
I found it difficult to load my Mamba at first but after a few trial and errors i can load it at high pressure in one smooth action.

Also that little gadget will be one more thing to forget when you go diving.

went in at thurlestone today to try the new suit. MAN what a difference a proper spearo suit makes. I have to sort the bouyance problem I now have, but otherwise im very happy.

Question. I know neoprene stretches but does it ever NOT go back to its original size? in that I mean will the suit become loose on me after awhile.

Neoprene gets thinner over time if you dive deep. Im not to sure but i would expect it to become more loose on you after while.

Had a lovely dive this afty down at Budleigh. Patchy Viz up to about 6m. Loads of small Pollack (up to about 42cm), all sizes of wrasse (some monsters), school Bass (up to about 1 pound) and some nice big fat Mullet (ranging from 1 to 7 pounds) - I took 3 - two of which are freezing, one digesting. Current down there very wierd changing direction during the rising tide - very strong at times and difficult to swim against.

The water was flat as a pancake as I got in at low tide. But the SW wind kicked in about 2.30 and it got rough. Saw Tribs heading for land in a hurry in his boat. I managed to get out after about 3 hours by then it was pretty rough going. But a lovely late season dive all the same.

Nice to share some info and see someone get a result!

Might possibly be around PM tomorrow James if you're still about, depends how the auction goes but well done.

SCOTT what was the vis like DAVE O

Hi David sorry for the late reply.

inshore along the beach was poor at about a half meter but further out was much better at about 5 meters saw a few mullet and wrasse, some decent pollack deeper out. it got rough as the tide came in but very diveable and worth the effort:)
