South Devon report 2007

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Depends, if you are having problems with it the normal ways then perhaps talking to a doctor?

UKDivers.net - The Ear this has the common manoeuvres as well as some variations. Might prove useful.

Valsalva and Edmonds manoeuvres work best for me.
I find the latter is best when scuba diving, doesnt work so reliably when freediving for some reason.

My dad's nose was broken three times, once was a surgical operation to fix the first two. After all this there is a clear way through to the eustachian tubes so he doesnt have to equalize at all.

I think in extreme cases this kind of surgery can be requested.

ah, the mists of mystery might be clearing! Ten years of amatuer boxing might not have done me any favours in terms of my airways then!!!

Cheers guys, helpful as always.

A very simple thing I discovered after some trouble is to tuck your chin to give a straight neck as you descend. It is natural to tilt your head back so that you can see the way ahead but this can make it a lot harder to equalise.

Looks like there are some good fish being caught in Devon still.

Spearheads, small wrasse might be soft but big wrasse (5lb+ ballans) are quite solid. The bones & meat are white (not green). You'll need a good knife.

Re. your phone, if you report it stolen with the IMEI number, your network provider should be able to get the phone blocked (& traced if they are feeling keen). Although, the fact that the perp. left your SIM card behind suggests some sort of human decency (or perhaps an inadequate attempt to prevent it being traced). I use some really festery old shoes when diving, that I leave in full view up the beach. Nobody in their right might would want to touch them.

Wind is dying down and I've almost got over a cold. Anyone got any good viz at the moment?
Wondered about a local trip - Tribs, how's Budleigh looking?

The boys i know are down there right now fishing a beach comp in a slight easterly swell, slight brownish tinge. Hopefully my cold will be gone by the week end as the wind looks good and last weekend i had a decent trip around and about between budleigh and ladram.

best of luck

Hi Spiderman. I got in on Sunday and the viz was a loverly 6 meters. could see straight to the bottom from the surface at meadfoot but it did drop on the otherside towards hopes nose to around 2 meters on the bottom. I hope the viz is still good as Im hoping to jump in after work.

how are people finding the water temperature lately, what suit where you using scottwilson when you ent on sunday, i am going on sunday and i think its going to be cold.

jwells I have a spetton fishman 5mm wetsuit with farmer john trousers.

nylon on the outside and smooth skin neoprene on the inside, VERY Warm

no zips to let the water in although a get a flush of cold water come thru the hood sometimes but thats due to me pissing about and man is it cold.

I had about 3 different suits this year from a divers 7mm beaver to my trusty old surf suit but this is just amazing. I will never go back to any other type other then a spearo/freediveing suit.

The picture of me in the suite is blurry due to the other half laughing at me while taking the pic . she says I look like a tadpole, I tend to agreerofl

hey scottwilson, thats a really nice suit. i am going in my surf suit its a 5/4/3mm so not to bad i obviosly have a hood, gloves and boots, i dont know how long i will last. i went a week ago and actually lasted 2 hours before i got to cold, which i think is not to bad.

you know when you first get in a you get like a a pain in your head like when you eat a ice cream to fast, i usually just lie on the top of the water and wait until i have sort of gone numb and i cant feel it anymore, the last couple of times i have got this pain but it has quickly passed. i am guessing when you get to like the middle of winter or about march time, it must be unbearable how do you lot deal with it in the middle of winter or march time when the water tempureture is at its lowest. i find this the worst part after the ice cream pain has gone its usually good after that.

Happy Birthday Mr. Scottwilson, hope you have a good un and keep up the spearing as winter is almost on us.:friday

I think the water is about 12 degC now. From about two weeks ago I am on a 7mm top and 5mm bottoms - Elios. In the near future I will switch to full winter gear - 7mm all over. This 7mm setup then keeps me in the water down to about 9deg C on the surface at this temp the odd water leak between the layers is really horrible.

The other thing I find is important is to make sure my hood covers as much of my forhead as possible from 12 deg and colder - you get numb eventually but the head shock can be painful

I've got a 5mm camo MTM Elios and last week end was in for four hours on and off whilst using the boat.

good bit of kit.

i have the Waterproof 7/5mm hood. That has kept me comfortable in 7degree waters with no cold shock. Highly recommended.

thanks Podge. the birthday gifts from the family will come in use in the winter when it starts getting chilly

Happy Birthday Wilson! Best wishes for a fishy weekend and an even fishier year!! :friday (all the rest come second: money, sex, health, love, your team winning the league...but fish still comes first IMHO ).

Cheers for the viz reports chaps. Woke up still full of snot so no diving today.

Sea temp 2 weeks ago was 13 degrees which I am sure is warmer than it usually is at this time of year.

I use a 5mm diveskin suit and being tall and thin I have never been called a tadpole, but I am described as looking like a big letter L when I stand side on wearing long fins.

Last time I was in I was pretty chilly after an hour but a high speed swim across the bay set me up well for another two hours.

so basically its going to be cold for me tommorow in a 5/4/3 surf suit for any long lenght of time, but i only want to go for an hour at the most so i think i may be ok, i'll just have to keep moving.
