South Devon report 2007

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I looked at the airfloors but was worried about sharp fishing hooks and speartips etc. If they puncture they are a nightmare to have fixed. Also the performance is not as good as with the the hard floor. The cadet (linked above) goes together in no time and the boards mean I can through stuff around in the boat and not worry. Not as quick to put together as an air floor but it certainly does not take long and it is more robust for sure.
If you are in Exeter Scott, why not pop into John Bridger Marine? They always have second hand stuff in there and are always happy to inflate/deflate their boats for you to see how practicle they are.

Another consideration is the outboard. The first one I had had an internal tank. This was a mistake. It ment I was never sure how much fuel I had left and had to do some refueling at sea-not nice! Now I have a 20ltr external tank which is more than enough for a whole day on the water but it does eat a bit of space in the boat. Having the 340 means this is OK but in my 310 it would not have been.

I would like to get GPS and something that measure depth for next year. Anyone got any advice on that? Do spearos exchange GPS data?

Fair point about fishing hooks, although it would have to be a very sharp speartip to do any harm to the Zodiac air floor. Having had both wooden and air floor I'm not planning on going back to wood as my 3.4 is nearly 20kg lighter than my old 3.5 wooden floored boat which means it is a lot easier to handle when the rest of the family clear off leaving me to launch or recover on my own.

with just one in the boat it was ok but with two it didnt plane and i didnt like the air floor it just sat there waiting for me to stick the gabbiano through it :) which thankfully never happen! i think a proper rib the way to go if you have the funds

Wow Foxfish!!!! you do like to live on the wild side:t

i like the idea of a rib as you can just deflate it and throw ( place gently and with care) into the back of the car .

Ive seen tenders 2.6 meters long brand new for £299 but not sure if that would fit me,a buddy and all our gear or just me and my gear for that matterrofl

Scottie just read ur post .
Was the 2.6 not even an option or doable

How sharp is your speartip? I can't imagine managing to pierce my airfloor with mine unless I was really trying to do so!
If your speartip is really that sharp then surely the tubes would be just as much at risk as well?

I put a wine bottle cork on the tip to stop the spear tearing my cars seats so I would imagine it to be a good habit while in a rib.

has anyone been in this past week. I checked paignton pier out yesterday and the viz looked good. now that the wind has died down im going to give it a go and try for some flatties as I have seen them down there.

mine are very sharp i take friends out with me and they have a nasty habit of shooting rocks with my guns so i have to sharpen them and i get a bit carried way! it would nt take to much effort to put a spear through the floor or tubes! on my last boat (the air floor) i had a pin hole puncher and the only thing i had in the boat that day was i bass,

The cork is a good idea on the top of the spear tip except every time I leave home with one it gets lost somewhere after I have taken it off for the first time, this means I need to drink more bottled beer before I go spearing again, or not drink so much beer, i am not sure which one.:friday

I now use a piece of silicone tubing about 6" in length that slips over the spear tip, this is permanently tied to the boat to stop it from vanishing!
Of course there is always the chance that you will puncture a tube with a spear if you are not careful, although my main worry is not the spear tip but fishing hooks. I always troll an otterboard when I am moving from one place to the next and fish hooks and inflatables do not mix! No matter how careful I am they do get dropped on the floor from time to time, especially when I am wrestling with a load of mackerel flapping around in the boat! having boards means this is not a problem. Yes, the tubes could be caught with a hook and they would puncture but at least they can be repaired easily an inexpensively should it happen (touch wood I have not punctured my tubes yet)! An air floor is not easily repaired and is very expensive to have fixed or replace.

So, Has anyone been in around torquay recently? I am thinking of going on thursday as the forecast seems ok.

Got in this morning and the water is still like soup:head. 2 foot viz and chilli water so got out after 40 minutes to find my parcel from norway had arrived with my new dvd:) "spearfishing in lofots"

only 25 minutes long  but the water is very similar to ours with loads of pollack and cod speared. they had guns on there from a company called teaksea and they look good so might have to rob the piggy bank and get on for summer next year . ROLL ON MARCH!!!!

Yeh, I went in at Bovisand.
Viz was nothing, less than a metre.
And my mask broke, so not happy.
