South Devon Report 2008

As Shiny said the viz was really good in most places, I saw lots of fish. Bass and Mullet. I had a couple shots at some decent sized bass but missed. It seemed to be at the end of my breath each time and I snatched the shots. While I was in closer to the shore I came across some big mullet sat in a gulley and managed to hit 1. A low belly shot and as we know they go nuts. I managed to get him in my arms and I should've dispatched him BUT while messing with the spear and line he got out of my grip and broke off the line. This meant I lost the fish and the poor bugger would die slowly :-( Then as I went to re load I noticed the wish bone piece had come undone. After much fumbling with slightly cold and gloved fingers i managed to get it slightly threaded and reloaded. I was on my way back now and saw a couple bass swimming at me so I relaxed and waited a few seconds and then suddenly a massive mixed shoal of mullet and bass were all around me everywhere. There was so many I didn't know which fish to shoot at but I wanted a bass. I took aim...fired...and missed ha ha. They stayed around me giving me the two fingered salute. The wishbone was apart again and I couldn't re-thread it. Even on the long swim back I saw more fish but I was out of it. Shiny keeps saying check your gun, take some spares etc. We had to go back to my house 10mins into the drive because I forgot my fins . Still, I am hoping to get in again Thursday or Friday or both if possible ,before having the weekend away. 1st session without a fish since the 1st couple of dives but the next one is going to be loaded. Attached is Shiny with a couple of lucky shots ;-)

Can anyone tell me if you are able to launch a small boat from bovisand harbour or is it not open to the public. I want to launch my rib from there to dive the breakwater and it seems to be the closest possible launch spot.

hi scott

me and james T launched my little inflatable from there earlier this year, its free but the parking is'nt.

Cheers Scott. Is the parking close to the slipway? Im so used to paying torbays carpark fee's I now carry a bag of change wherever I go

it looks very promising on flashearth so will put it on my ever growing dive list.

went for a dive today. carted all my gear including 2 guns, down to the beach, got blown around by the wind, sniggered at by a group of national trust tree huggers and then promptly lost my mask in 4 feet of water.
while hunting for my mask I noticed one of my fins float past...... needles to say I didnt actualy get to dive.

made the long walk back up the beach a bit disheartend and drove back to paignton to venture sports and bought another mask. slightly expensive trip but at least I know where theres viz.

Great report Shiny. The water temp. is down to 8c or 50f here in West Cork, and I reckon the bass have left us for now. Does anyone know what the water temp. is there in Devon?

Unfortunately I haven't been in for two weeks now but I'm sure it's a lot warmer than 8c! It was 14c on October 16th.

Shiny, How can you possibly dive with 3.5 bottoms? I find it cold after 2-3 hours with a 2piece 5mm elios suit!

Really? Hope your alright now! Im not sure if I could really say that was an advantage? difficult one, sorry to bring that up shiny, cheers for reply though.

morning all, any one know any good places to dive today??

i havent been out for a few weeks and i dont have a clue what the vis is like anywhere!!

Dived a spot today that I know loves a strong wind and it didnt disapoint.

Viz was around 6 to 8 meters and clear. Sunfish my d3 said 12c so still warm although the wind made it feel a lot colder.

took the dive hunter with as it makes long distances a lot easier first fish on the stringer was a small pollack which I took a long shot at as he was hanging around the outside of the shoal. saw plenty of bass in the kelp some around the 4lb mark but were to quick for me so moved further out.

swam over a pinnacle and found the big boys hiding under a ledge ,aimed and took my second and last fish for the day 9lb 8 oz my personal best to
date:martial

Very nice dive although getting changed back at the car was freezing.

From what I can tell the wind is supposed to drop near to next weekend so will be back in on Friday if the weather behaves itself.

Safe diving

Great fish Scott! Well done.
Did you get the Sevylor locally? I have been looking around for some form of transport for next season.
Cheers
North

CHEERS!!!! im still stoked

North1 I bought it from a company in London. £104 delivered to my door. its spent most of summer getting in the girlfriends way in the dining room. but its very good for choppy sea so perfect for todays dive.

Sevylor - AquaStuff.net - Your outdoor gear specialist based in the UK. they didnt have any stock when I last checked. I waited about a month for mine to arrive.

If you ever down this way you more than welcome to loan it for a week or so

Fantastic fish Scott. Well done mate. Not sure what 8 metre vis is as we have 8 inches vis. Been the story here all year.

Good luck in the FOM.
