went for a dive today and it seems the bass are back from there holiday ahvent seen any in a while didnt manage any but had one nice 3-4lber come right at the spear and i wa waiting for it to turn to get a better shot and was to quick moving my finger to the trigger and scared him few more seen aswell which is alwys good
I always shoot bass which come head on and isnt turning. Lost so many fish waiting for it to turn, they get a few inches to the spear then bolt away, Very anoying when its a nice size fish!. If you have a pigtail swivel on your gun you can still get the spear out the fish quickly if you cant pull the spear out its head.
Probably goes without saying, but in my experience you need good sharp spears to take the head shot. It takes some extra nerve aswell because it feels like a more difficult shot - so in your mind you have to let go of waiting for the fish to turn, for what feels like the easier (more room for error) body shot, and just squeeze the trigger.

head shots can be a bugger when u think too much about it, I take the shot without thinking it over in my head and i second matt with the pigtail or clip much easier

I have to say I dislike taking the kebab shot. I have had more than a few bounce off, even with a sharp spear point and close range. However I don't get as many bass presenting that way as some of you guys (in fact lately I don't get as many bass full stop :head).
A lot of my hunting is in the string weed shallows where I come across bass at all angles and often they are stationary. Most of my shots are at some angle through the head from very close up.
Aspetto by its very nature often sees bass drawn in which means they approach head on. Given time to aim I go for the eye shot in these cases. Gruesome but effective.
Three years ago I was hunting the 4 foot shallows when I had a nice bass come at me head on in a clear patch between string weed beds. I aimed for the top of its head from fairly close range. Because of the shallow water the ange was only slightly downwards. The spear hit spot on and cannoned off upwards never having penetrated the fish's skull. The bass keeled over and lay twitching on the bottom. Now I've had this situation before and I knew if I tried to grab the slippery fish that it would recover and swim off. A quick reload and another shot is the answer. however, half way through the reload the bass gave a mighty shake, righted itself and slowly, drunkenly swam off. Bet he had a hell of a headache :hungover.

nice fish nick, had some good luck myself today had this 9 3/4 pound bass stone it right in the head was looking in this gully and saw two large mullet milling around and in the distants i could see this nice 5 pounder went to the surface for another breath trying to keep an eye on the spot when i dived and leveled up i saw that the 5 pounder was gone thinking shit the 1 that got away this 9 3/4 pounder stuck its head out thank you verey much got 2 more bass and mullett great dive saw quite a lot of bass

Had a cracking day out with shiny1 :friday
highlight of the day apart from the white knuckle ride out on the boat has to be the 9lb 9oz pollack I found on the edge of the reef.
I had just spent a frustrating 40minutes missing mullet and decided to change spots, as I reached the edge of the reef I saw a dark shape appear from the kelp below and head straight below me. dropped down to get a closer shot and hit the pollack behind the head a short stuggle later and I had him on the stringer 9lb 9oz :friday
Had a nice mixed bag at the end of the day of pollack, bass, cuttle fish and a nice flounder, sorry about the mess on the boat Shiny1 that cuttle was messy bugger rofland cheers for the snickers it went down a treat

Shiny likes that full throttle speed, he's a bit of an adrenalin junky. Ask him about the banger racing days!!!!!! He said you both had a cracking day, he's full of cold and yet still got away with diving. Well done on the fish to you both. He gives me **** when I mess the boat up or point my loaded gun at him! I dunno why.
