im not clued up on boat engines but the starting reel has broken and the impellor or watever its called its a fan that causes suction so the engine takes in water to cool has broken because the engine sisnt low enough in the water to bite so we have to cut the transform to make the engine lower dunno if that makes sense lol small jobs hopefully bit annoyed as spent 1950 on the whole lot and the fact its a new engine suprised it went wrong but apparently thats boating for ya ha ha

From your pictures it looks like the outboard is the right length for the transom.

what model Excel is it?

replacing an impellor is no easy job unless you know what you doing :)

Hey Dan,

Unlucky mate, but looks like a nice set up. I should seriously look at the engine set up again before cutting into the transom. You need all you can get back there for strength across the back. You might just find that the impellor was old and that is why it wasn't flushing through. Worst situation, cavitation, but try a new impellor first. Ask ASH marine at Topsham, they are Tohatsu dealers or Retreat boatyard also at Topsham. You can get leg extension for outboards to convert short shaft to long shaft.

Mate - cutting the Transom sounds like a bad idea to me :naughty - definately don't do that without checking with a local boat mechanic - could undermine the strength of your rig. The prop looked low enough in the pic you had. Impellers are critical to the cooling of your motor and can burn out in seconds if the motor is started without the passage of water through the system - if you want to start the motor out of the water get some water 'headphones' to connect to your hose, or if small enough a big bucket of water. Those motors have a good rep so I heard, if it is too short talk to a dealer about exchanging it before cutting the transom - could make a difference when you come to sell...:confused:

Plenty of people on DB who know more about this than me.

I bought hydofoils for £30 off ebay which got rid of a cavitation problem with my outboard and lifts the boat onto the plain a lot quicker ( have no reduction in speed so all good)

the model is an exel xhd 430
when we had the boat going you could hear that the prop was spinning in the air bubbles to much and not biting the water so think it needs to be a little lower maybe the leg extension is the best road to go down

Looking at your pictures the water pick up will definitely be low enough as it is, so no need to cut anything up to make it work.
Cavitation shouldn't be a problem unless somebody has changed the prop to something non standard.
Water pump impellers on outboards are like cambelts on cars - unless you know its age always replace it and then do so at regular intervals. They also need to be looked after by making sure the motor is never run dry even for short periods as without water to lubricate the rubber they will melt in no time at all.
Replacement impellers are usually relatively cheap (£10-£20 for parts) although if it has been run in bad condition you may need to replace other parts of the pump (maybe up to £50)
Hope you get it sorted easily as it looks like a nice little set up you've got there.

went out with ollie today very very poor vis in some places i couldnt see the end of my 60cm gun managed to find some vis though saw a nice 5lber right beside me but had no chance of getting to him before he noticed saw a few more good size bass but all turning into the gloom so couldnt see them to shoot good to still be seeing a few bass around wonder how much longer we have:waterwork ollie had a frustratiing dive ill leave him to tell the story
good news though it wasnt the impellor it was just a blockage now just have to sort out the cavatating problem and we are there

ha ah if only i knew what you ment there lol with the hight of the outbaord our transorm is 14.5" so there should be no prob with the riding hight of it ollie wnats to try one more setting with the angle of it hopefully that will resolve the problem other than that its changing prop time
