Hi All,
Im looking for a little advice, I know a lot of you use princeton tec`s so is this a good deal or should I hold out for the new 400 lumen LED version?

Well believe it or not I spotted that one last night as I was trawling through ebay diving (all 4000+ entries in 83 pages). Nowt better to do at present with F10 forcast for this weekend.
Looks a good deal. New price is about £85-£90 but the one advertised is second hand/used. They are tough torches though and the LEDS are almost indestructable.
I haven't seen yet but expect to soon see this model discounted as the new 400 lumens version is only £10 dearer and the old 170 lumens we are talking about will be out of date stock. Denny's diving have the new 400 at about £85 but I suspect that's a mistake and it's the price of the old 170.
I've caught a lot of fish with a torch same as the one advertised but after chistmas I shall have a 400. You can night dive with a small cheap torch but bigger is better.
At the end of the day something is worth what someone will pay for it.

I saw that one too and was quite excited until I realised that it wasn't an LED torch :head
I'm sure it's quite a nice halogen torch but don't buy it thinking that its the 170 lumen LED model!
yeah I realised its not the LED model , I cant find anything about this model from princeton tecs website as its been replaced by the shockwave II so I dont even know whats it output / lumens rating is...
If dennys are advertising 400 lumens for £85 i guess thats what they have to sell you otherwise its false advertising....might just buy one of those

Sorry I fell for that one as I assumed it was the LED model. Should have known better. Thought I had seen a used LED version on ebay but it was probably this one. I am getting a touch senile.
I would not now use a non LED torch but for someone starting out it's okay. The UK and the princeron tec torches are very similar. The UK C8 I used to use was basically the same as the one advertised. Both use 8 C cells and the UK has 2 bulbs either 2 of 13.5watt or 1 of 13.5watt and 1 of 20watt. This PT has I think a single 12watt bulb and would give out about 120 lumens.

As briefly mentioned a few posts back "std" bulb torches are very quickly being dropped by the manufactures in preferance of the LED versions.
The technology within the LED's is moving so fast that UK have already dropped all the "STD" torches from their range.
The LED versions are tad dearer - but once you have used both it is hard to want to go back to the std bulb versions.
In all fairness to denny / priceton tec, 400 lumens for £104 is very very good value.
The you will pay about the same +/- for the new UK C8 eLED - and that is "only" 250 lumens
However if the price is right on the original model, and it gets you going then all is good,

I would definately buy the LED version. I use the 400 lumen PT Shockwave LED, and Tong uses a UK C8 halogen. The PT has a nice crisp white light with a good angle of spread, compared to the halogen that has more of a direct beam and a yellowish light. Don't forget about battery life too. The PT can go for 12+ hours on the lower power setting. Tong's UK is pretty much empty after 2 hours.

Interestingly enough Uk did briefly do a C8eLED plus which put out a quoted 370 lumens. They they stopped that in favor of the C8eLED at 250 lumens? - seems strange. In any case the eLED plus was dearer and you would pay way more than the £104 for it.
We do deal with a large number of torch manufactuers - though by the time you ignore the ones that are way overpriced, and the ones that are simply not suitable due to size/style (or simply crap) etc, it is then easy to see why PT and UK have such a big share of the market.
Top of my head torch wise we deal with:
UK,Beaver,Fa-mi,Intova,Tusa,Cressi,Dive Rite,Metal Sub,Green Force,tektite
The ones that sell well always have a good balance of cost vs size/weight vs performance. Simple really, but its amazing how many torch manufactuers get it wrong!
