Thanks for the tips guys. Had limited time so went for Torbay rather than South Hams. Vis was variable but up to 5m in places. Got a mullet (2lb 5oz gutted) which is either an OK grey or a big golden grey. The yellow patch wasn't as bright as some I've seen but it did seem to be more than the yellow tinge of an ordinary grey. What do people think?

(Yes I know it was a bad shot but it was swimming away from me and turned just as it was going out of range :t )

its a grey mate the golden have a distinvtive spot rather a gold colouring the tail are more streamilined on the golden as well or atleast i think not the best expert on them im afraid

Most destinctive on a GG is the long thin pectoral fin. Your fish has a short broad one so definitely a common thick lip. Few other pointers as well so it's confirmed. Always worth a look on the HOF.

As I suspected really. I thought this one was normal until I got home and was about to cook it then the yellow just seemed a lot more distinct than usual.
Maybe it was just a very healthy fish because it tasted better than average too

Just returned from a walk along Bee Sands beach, a lovely evening, calm seas,moonlight reflecting on the water, the pink cloudscape above Start Bay, almost a perfect vista . . . apart, that is, from the dozens and dozens of dead dogfish washed up on the high tide mark.
Still showing the scars from a net, obviously the by-catch from a gill net or trawl net.
A sad and wasteful thing to happen to so many fish. :naughty

Short sighted too! They could be sold onto the inshore crabbers as pot bait. Not the best in terms of scent but tough to keep the traps crabs/lobsters fed until collection. I have used discarded dogs in my storage pots and they'll last a week no problem. When you consider that some utter TW*Ts have nearly wiped out my local estuary's flounder population for pot bait then this waste in just magnified in its wastefulness.

I had a great night dive last night. Clear skies, full moon, no rain or wind. It was almost perfect. The only viz was deeper out in the bay in about 8-10m. Lots of red mullet out on the sand, so took one of those, and shot a flounder too. There was not much else out really, except about a dozen or so spotted and thornback rays. My buddy got four of them with a polespear that I lent him, and picked up a lobster that was wandering about.
Next thing I know, he's saying "I've dropped the spear. I can't find it!". Great. After 20 min looking for it, its disappeared, somewhere in the kelp.
Cue another dive this morning to look for it, but with SCUBA this time. Lugging a full twinset up and down a cliff isn't fun, but we found the spear, and the viz was better than the night before, so it was a brilliant dive. Got a nice crab for tea as well.

Hi All,

Up and at them this morning, in by half six and out by half nine. Not much doing and only had two shots present themselves. Thankfully, the two shots resulted in breakfast and stock for the freezer.

Was going to head in again in the evening but the wind swang around and ruined it. BOOOOO!!!!

Got in for dive this morning with Dan bolt from www.underwaterpics.co.uk

Boat traffic for the most part was quiet and the boats that did come past all slowed down and stayed there distance which is a first

Viz wasnt the best 1 to 3 meters . I had a go at taking a few pics of the squeeshy things on the reef and a few jellys that drifted past. On pretty much every dive I was met by a wall of pollack which followed me around, Great sight !!!!!

Parted company with Dan and made my way around to a different spot only to bump into a local spearo who jumped in and joined for the rest of the day.

The tide had started to run and the fish were out in full force, soon had a bass on the stringer and missed plenty in the strong current. followed a gully out to a clearing and found a nice lobby tucked under the kelp, a short tussle later and he was in the bag

The sea started to get a bit lumpy so we called it a day and made the bumpy ride back to the shore

a Sea & sea dx1200 hd mate . Lovely Camera and when setup properly it takes stunning pictures and video...... just not in my hands

It does look like a nice bit of kit. No money for cameras at the moment but I'm looking around and considering what's going to replace my ixus 850. What I would really like is something with manual focus for the macro shots of the squeeshy things.

Hi all whent in this am lots bass about but no big one 4 big sawl of 50 + did miss a big 6 to 7lb bass:rcard 3 times i saw that bass at that spot got a nice plaice on sunday just under 2lb, any way went home today with 1 bass and 8 mullets happy with that

went out on fri the first time in a while due to the weather damn southerly winds:rcard great to see alot of bass about missed three all easy shots my spear seems to be flying up now even on the fish i got the shot is high up on the fish i resently got a new spear for it and my theory is that the line is now to tight when the gun is loaded has any one wlse had a problem with this ??

i should of had 7-8 bass but left with 3 bass and 1 golden mullet biggest bass just being over 3lb

I managed to get in the water for the first time on Saturday thanks to Tribs letting me have an old pair of fins of his - thanks a lot. Saw some fish and small spider crabs, I don't know what the fish were but don't think they were edible. Looked pretty kind of had swirling yellowy/brown patterns on them - wrasse?
